I haven't bothered with the first season, and I'm wondering if I will still be able to understand what is going on.

Agreed. Just finish the first arc and skip to the ending. The second arc isn't needed.

I don't know why don't you watch the first season if you want to watch the second one. I always watch the seasons in order to know all the story, but that's just me though I recommend you to do it too.
Why watch it? If you're a fan of videogames you will enjoy it as much as most of the people did, even if you aren't it is great. Personally I think it was perfect, a bit of action, a bit of romance, adventures, videogame related, and a fantasy theme mostly in ALFheim. I just loved it and I hope you do so.

Most people are telling you to don't watch the second arc, but you should, because its in that arc that you know what happened to Asuna while the other players went back to their normal lifes, the reason why they are in a special school and why Suguha likes Kirito that much.

If you are going to watch Sword Art Online, watch it until the end.

I'm not sure what's worse. A spoiler or fake Elitists. It's funny how SAO brings in such a large variety of people, it's so damn funny.
Please send me a message/profile comment since I will most likely not check my forum posts. Thank you.

Ignore this asshole, you don't even need to watch the first season to understand this series because the protagonist is alternative version of Kirito and is actually named Kiroto and is actually a women!
The setting is completely different and there's a lot of yuri between the MC and the female lead of this series!

Nope! First season is not completely necessary in understanding the new one. Most of the original cast won't play a major role in the GGO arc anyway so you won't be completely clueless. If there's some stuff that you don't understand, I'm sure a simple Google search will clear it up ^-^

Nope. It's the same main character. He just wrote his game name using a different Japanese aphabet (forgot if it was hiragana or katakana) and in order to understand why he'll be extremely stronger than everyone else in this season, you need to watch the first season (I have read all of the novels including the 51% of novel 13, which have been translated, so as a big fan who knows what will happen in the next season I recommend you watch the first season beforehand) :)

P.S. There's no yuri, and the main character's avatar kinda looks like a girl in this game, but there's an enxplanation as why that is (at least in the novel, I don't think they'll bother about it in the anime)

AGREED . . . . . for sure suguha will still be featured in SAOII. . . . there is no suguha in the 1st arc . . .so watch it completely, . .besides it is entertaining. . . .
If you feel like crying you shouldn’t hold back your tears.

GGo or SAO II's events are HIGHLY related to SAO.
If you think that watching the MC
for a reason you dont know is good, then yes you dont have to watch SAO I.

The second half of SAO is a lot better than the first half.

People on Mal only prefer the first half because IF YOU DIE IN THE GAME........... YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE!

OMFG SO EDGY. UGH THE PAIN. UGH SNM UUUUUGH BLACK LEATHER TRENCHCOATS. GOD SO COOL. DRUGS AND GUNS. UGH. MOTORCYCLES.

So yeah if you like better writing with shit from actual video games in it, the second half is really good.

If you like slow plots about the MC dating random girls but OMFG WE MIGHT DIE WAAAH LETS CRY ON CAMERA, you should just skip the show altogether and just go watch Death Note or Cereal Experiments Chocula.

Incest and tentacle rape is much better, right?
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Though you could watch it without having watched the first, I would recommend you to watch the first season, since there's a heavy lot of references of what happened in SAO, or better than that, read the novels. The novels are way better than the anime!

A huge reason you want to see season 1 before season 2 is so you understand from Kirito's perspective why he's so messed in the head. The guy has PTSD. Without watching season 1 you won't understand why in episode 6 of season 2 that the new protagonist is able to identify with Kirito, even after she's been mad at him. She sees the same look in his eyes that she had after she went through her traumatizing experience that left her with PTSD as well. After Kirito sees the a specific tattoo he has a major break down. Without understand what Kirito went through his reaction would seem extreme and exaggerated. They attempt to use some vague back story to help with the emotion but I imagine it'd be bland at best without seeing season 1.

There's other reasons, obvious ones; like connecting the dots on things that season 2 hasn't really explained well. Some season 2's can be ok stand alones but for the most part it's obvious they expect you to be caught up with this release.

Of course you have to.

"When /a/ sends its fags, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you.
They’re sending fags that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us.
They’re bringing cancer. They’re bringing bait. They’re shitposters.
And some, I assume, are good fags."

It's probably already been answered for you but here's my help...

Watch the first four episodes (brilliant)

Watch the remainder of the first arc, skipping through any boring or cheesy parts at will (mediocre)

Watch the second arc (optional and really only worth it for the battles)

To put it simply SAO is a mixed bag of fun, adventurous and cheesy nonsense. Some parts are great and memorable, some parts are worth fast-forwarding or skipping altogether.
