HAPPY BIRTHDAY Natsuki! Tbh, if I had a birthday, I'd like my name by written in the air like that.

Yay. Typical episode as usual though. Lol @ the oni masks in the PV.

A decent episode, though I really like how they set up for Natsuki's birthday. IDK how to describe the Taboo card game but it was kind of funny.

Anyone who's played competitive shiritori probably enjoyed the episode much more. I felt Natsuki's pain with the Ru T_T

Although, I remember crushing the other teams with that too :)

So much fun memories!

This was possibly my favorite episode yet!!

The word battle was quite funny but I think that with a different narrator it could've been truly hilarious. Picture that same scene narrated by Kaiji's narrator (or someone with a similar sounding voice).

So many Engrish words in the word game, so the more languages you know the more change you got to win the word game?
And that word game was a pretty fierce battle.
That birthday party didn't look cheap they even hired aircraft the wright her name in the sky.

What's with that epic battle episode??? oO xD
I was waiting for the punchline at Natchans birthday but luckily there was none. Liked the "good ending" very much...
@ Aversa: The modern japanese language includes many, really many engrish words. A friend of mine said the amount of engrish vocabulary was as high as 25%.
So you don't get an advantage for knowing more languages because these words count as words used in daily japanese conversations. My professor in university even forbid me to write engrish as proper english words in papers. If I were to write something about "Sword Art Online" right now, I would have to write about "Soodo aato onrain" (Well, since "Sword Art Online" is the official romaji version, the example is void, but I guess you understand the point I'm trying to make).

Fantastic episode. Finally we saw Natsuki actually doing something instead
of just making tsukkomi retorts. Happy birthday to her. I have not played
that word chain game for so, so long. It is truly intense. I really don't mind
waiting two weeks if they come up with something great like this. Just above,
floatings said that this was the best episode so far. I would certainly say
that this one is the easiest to enjoy without struggling to understand a lot
of esoteric "niche humor" (in-jokes).

For next week's episode, there will be something totally new. Up until now ...

However, next week ...

That's what it says here, in the summary for Episode 8 which is in Japanese:
http://www.ntv.co.jp/kitakubu/story/story08.html

Regarding English loanwords that are now part of the Japanese language, yes
there are a lot of them. Also, Japan imported a huge vocabulary from China,
along with the kanji writing system. In addition, it is not hard to find French
loanwords, especially if you are a fan of Marimite. German too. It is less well-
known that many Japanese words which appear to be home-grown are actually
Portuguese loanwords. The most famous example is "pan" which means "bread".
Unfortunately, if you say "pan" while playing that word chain game, you'll lose!

We are all informal on our posts here, so this next point doesn't matter much.
But the word "engrish" has some other meanings if you check out Urban
Dictionary. So use it with a bit of care. The proper term for a word in the
Japanese language which was borrowed from some other language is a
"gairaigo" (外来語) . Gairaigo can come from English, French, German, etc.

See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gairaigo
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=engrish

Finally the much-talked about Shiritori game !!! I think that was pretty one high water mark in the manga so it is great that the anime puts in the effort to animate it with focus!
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

loved it!!
my favorite episode so far<3

in case someone doesn't notice it, the last part about all of those things that they want to do with Natsuki's b'day party is another chain words games :3

"Zukou (handicraft), uchiage-hanabi (fireworks), bifuteki (beefsteak), kiui (kiwi), ichigo keeki (strawberry cake), kitai (hope), iroha (ABCs)"

and the last one "happy birthday natsuki" or it could also be "haato (heart)"

edit:
after re-watching it again, it could also mean "hana (flower)"

I certainly had not noticed the word chain that riku_zero pointed out.

One thing that is distinctive about Kitakubu is that there are many interesting
things to see if you look very, very closely.

That is not the case in most anime series.

The rationale for doing this is not apparent to me. After all, the whole point of
producing an anime series is to get most viewers to enjoy an episode on the first
viewing. Putting in clever details isn't going to improve the ratings or BD sales.

I suspect that this series tends to be a "labor of love" on the part of the people
who are working on it. There are quite a number of other examples where
extra effort is made to make things elaborate in ways that don't seem necessary.

The small number of comments on this thread suggests that people are losing
interest. The minimal estimated first-week sales of BD/DVDs tends to confirm it.

I heard the "Gu-he-he!" at 22:52. Here is the entire text:

Hey guys, did you know, the mating process of the great gray slug
is a grappling match? Gu he he! Sounds hot and steamy, doesn't it?

I enoyed Oni-ai, but I don't remember the "ge he he" part. Maybe somebody
can be more specific about what the connection might be.

Here is what Wikipedia says regarding the mating habits of the great gray slug:
(Warning, this is definitely rated NC-17 !)

Also, you can search on Google Images for "great gray slug mating", but I would
recommend against it.

I checked the summary for Episode 8 which is posted online in Japanese here:
http://www.ntv.co.jp/kitakubu/story/story08.html
I won't give away spoilers. However, I am fairly certain that they have not
mentioned anything about Episode 8 feature the great gray slug.

If only the series had started off this good, then perhaps it would have better luck with disc sales.

That shiritori (word chain...oh Crunchyroll, you rascal) game was top notch, and the ending was so sweet. This show is really growing on me.

And to think I considered dropping it too.

Great episode!!

Loved the word game with a tint of Yugioh. Natsuki's taboo word when she showed it reminded me of an episode of Yugioh I believe the last episode of Yugioh. I would say this was the best episode by Natsuki thus far.

That was easily the most intense Shiritori game I've ever seen. It even brought forth the same suspenseful emotions I felt when I watched Yu-Gi-Oh! as a kid!

I was really expecting some kind of joke during Natsuki's birthday party, but it turned out very heartwarming. :)

Making game of words something special.. Nice.. ;P Well, I like the game myself, so addition of cards is interesting..
Such explanation and stuff.. Makes me think it's a parody on sports genre.. Or any intense mind games, or stuff like that.. They could make this parody a bit shorter, to be honest..
Yu-Gi-Oh reference.. ;P For some reason, I'd imagine Azarashi seal more like 2k defender, not 2k attacker.. ;D
