Will you still actively watch anime if every illegal source of anime was shut down?

I really don't know, as I'm unavailable to buy from anime stores since well, there isn't any in my country. Though I'd find a way, idk. Not actively, that's for sure

I prefer legal steams anyway and I'm an anime collector so yeah, nothing much would change.

Also, even if I had money to buy anime...It would be only the mainstream like SAO, SNK... if I wanted to watch something older I couldn't, at least not in my country...

Damn, very good question. My answer would be yes, I would sub to crunchyroll or whatever. Anime is my hobby and I love it. Lots of people pay to enjoy their own hobbies so the same applies to anime for me :)

Once you grow up and get a job, it won't be that hard. Crunchyroll isn't particularly expensive.

Also, if you look at the right sites, DVDs can often be very cheap.

With Code Geass R2, I would have spend almost a hundred on it. However, after finding one obscure site, I found it for like 30 bucks. Nowadays that's an easy feat. However, I ordered this a long time ago, and I could only find super expensive links at that time

Look at this shit. It's hilarious

This mutherfucker wants $575 for Code Geass, both seasons. Seriously, they look nice, but still... $575 dollars?

I've never checked out Crunchyroll so I don't know how big their library is, but assuming it's nearly, or just as big as those on illegal sites (and it doesn't just have the popular stuff), I wouldn't mind paying for a subscription if worse comes to worse.

If not, I'd probably just drop anime all together, since the DVD prices for a lot of anime is just ridiculous.

I use legal means as well, I just use illegal means because I can't get all of them legally. If I had only the legal means, the only difference is that I would watch less. I earn money, I can pay.

Probably not. I might pay for something like Crunchyroll depending on the price or a subscription + the amount of content (If every illegal source was wiped out, my guess would be a very sharp increase in subscription fees to sites like crunchyroll). However would I pay for anime / manga? I have already spent quite a bit, will I spend more? Absolutely not. One volume of a manga is about the same as a best selling novel. It is a simple question of "Is this value really acceptable?", and the simple answer is not even close.

I download everything anyway since streaming is so slow and annoying for me at the moment. But most likely not, I don't want to pay for something I'll only see or read once, I used to buy manga volumes but its not worth it.

You can read/watch more than once... And you can also resell after reading or watching, just like I do with games and books sometimes. Sometimes I get 80~90% of the original price. Isn't profit, but considering that I played, read, watched, I gain much more than what I paid for...

Ditto - and two of them cost nothing and the other is a shared family account. So, nothing would change. I don't watch much if any pirated stuff.

I purchase all my Anime on DVD, but when it comes to stuff that isn't licensed, I torrent the fansubbed stuff.

If I couldn't get fansubs for unlicensed Anime, things would really suck, as I would be somewhat limited to what I could watch.

I would probably stop watching anime. Videogames would be a way cheaper hobby, especially thanks to Steam sales.

I don't really want to drop a ton of money on DVDs or whatever and hope I'll actually like the anime. I've looked for Black★Rock Shooter DVDs, and the prices are outrageous, considering it's only an 8 episode series. The only reason I'd consider buying it now is because I've already watched it for free (and became one of my favourites) and I'd like to support the producers.
I also remember seeing a DVD set of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in a store, which I really wanted to buy since it's one of my favourite anime (thanks to the free torrented version), but then changed my mind after the seeing the ridiculous high price tag on it.

Maybe if the prices on anime weren't so high I'd consider buying more of it.

I wonder what the responses would be.

This would mean making compromises in budget, and actively trying find legal vendors of your target anime. Sources include: Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix for americans, amazon, local legal shops, etc.

I personally shudder at the thought, given that I have no substantial source of income. But I reckon I'd get by with my Crunchyroll subscription and just try to import any highly recommended anime that wasn't in CR whenever I can.

me too.. of course I would still be watching animes but my choices would be very limited and I don't think I can watch it as much.. it's like going to the doctor and finding out I have cancer lol

Only if a reasonable streaming service was available, which right now it is not in my country.
Maybe very few anime that I know are super good I would buy on DVD/Blu Ray.

I do re-watch scenes but its boring to watch full episodes again unless its really awesome, as for selling I really wish I could do that but it's very difficult in a country where manga/anime exclusive stores are very rare and pretty much non-existent.

Was definitely thinking about that. If they lose their competition I think everything will have a sharp rise in price. It's no longer "how about you support the industry by watching anime for free on crunchyroll instead of pirating anime which has no ads and better quality, we're even giving away free trials" to " Well we're all that you got, 50 bucks a month, take it or leave it."
