As if we didn't have enough "best of" genre-specific/console-specific/period-specific game threads, to pick ONE as the best game?

Ohgee.

I don't even know where to begin. Maybe the Mass Effect trilogy. In terms of replay, characters (Garrus, Tali, g'old Joker, Anderson, Liara), settings, a story that isn't completely forgettable, and a totally satisfying gameplay experience.

Kind of a long shot, but I don't suppose anyone's ever played a game called 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors? Because that is definitely the best game I have ever played.

Phantasy Star Online: Episodes 1 & 2 besides it being one of the best online dungeon crawlers ever created.

I met alot of really good friends on there that I still keep in contact with, That game was the sole reason my worst highschool days where bearable. And I've still to this day never have been find a game that made me as half as happy as that game did.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

I agree completely. I've played too many great game to be able to pick a "best game".

But if put on the spot I'd have to say that Valkyria Chronicles and Dragon Age: Origins would definitely be contenders for the title.

For probably pure nostalgic reasons, I would say Super Smash Bros Melee. It had some of my favorite characters from the series, addictive gameplay and was loads of fun. Many hours of my childhood were wasted to this game ^_^

If I think about it more though I am not sure what the "Best" game I have played is..... Call of Duty 4 and Dragon Age Origins were 2 games that really got me into gaming so maybe on of those...

I don't know about the "best" game but the game that left a lasting impression on me was the original Deus Ex. The story and the gameplay was amazing at the time.

As for VNs, I would Little Busters Ecstasy.

What was the games that you played that was the best? For me it's a tie between Persona 4 (Ps2) and Catherine (Ps3). One of the reasons I picked P4 was because of the story and the gameplay which I was used to from P3, fro Catherine it was also the story but what got me the most was the gameplay on how you can climb the tower in different ways from everyone else who played it. Both games had moments that was great for me during the game also ^_^

I don't consider myself a "gamer", so people may scoff at this.

But "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" and "Megaman X" for SNES have been my favorites ever since I played them, some 10 years ago. It's a mix of fun gameplay and nostalgia.

Again? Eh, I guess we have to have one of these once in a while.

Planescape: Torment - for completely turning the established RPG tropes on their heads with what so many considers the most intriguing story ever told in the medium.

Half-Life - for seamlessly blending story and g'ameplay mechanics with absolutely superb level design.

System Shock 2 - as Chris Avellone himself worded it: "There's a reason I continually cite System Shock 2 as a "design doc" for developers - it got so many things about the experience right, it's a must-play title"

Some honorable mentions: Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate II, UFO: Enemy Unknown, Thief II, Alpha Centauri, Fallout, Heroes III.

I could never find myself to play pc games for some reason .__.

God of war trilogy, MGS4, Uncharted 2, Age of empires 3 (online), Prince of persia games.

Reasons being that they were enjoyable and you couldn't just fly through them with ease, played GOW3 and UC2 on hardest difficulties for trophies. Generally I get bored of games which aren't at least a little challenging.

I would say there's

Competitive gamer - Whores out games in which he plays to a competitive level.
Gamer - Usually someone who plays a fair amount almost every day.
Casual gamer - Plays once in a while.

World of Warcraft during its glory days. It was the best MMORPG of it's time and I played it from 2004 all the way to 2011.I personally found it to be good all the way until pre-cata.

Zelda:Skyward Sword: It was essentially to me a big breakthrough for the Zelda franchise. They finally took the Wii motion plus and integrated it so well the gameplay itself was simply just too much fun. Along with that they even went in more depth with story, upgrades, etc. kind of taking some attributes of RPGs and just blending it all together so well.

Warcraft 3: Along with a superb campaign and competitive battles online what made this game so fun was all the custom games that were made for it. Dota, Escape from Prison, Are you a Retard?, Parasite and more even though it was the same game each custom game was really fun and different in their own way making for plenty of hours wasted playing WC3.

Throwing in the Half-Life games for obvious reasons and perhaps Shadow of the Colossus too. Shadow of the Colossus had breath-taking visuals to the epic fights when struggling to climb some 100 foot giant and trying to defeat it. Even though the story was a bit shallow the gameplay is what made it shine.

A few more I could throw in, but I don't want to write a whole essay. Although I will say Planescape:Torment, Zelda:Link to the Past and Megaman X were definitely really amazing games as well. Planescape:Torment was way ahead of its time.
