Gungrave. Usually not a fan of watching stuff with crime / gunfights -- I find the subjects terribly boring -- but this show really hit it off with the two stellar protagonists. If you want to watch this though, please skip the horrendous first episode. Don't worry, they show it again later.

Katanagatari. So talky. So much gatari and so little katana. Nevertheless, I found myself oddly drawn to the dialogue, heavy as it was. Excellent writing, imo.

Sora no Manimani. School anime never particularly interest me. This one surprised. All the characters and how enthusiastic they were with their "astronomical" hobby, all the feel-good star-gazing scenes every episode, the camaraderie... hidden gem right here.

I'm not big on mecha anime, but Gurren Lagann's hot bloodedness is intoxicating.

When I saw that Yuru Yuri had all the markings of a "Cute girls doing cute things" anime I thought it wouldn't be interesting at all. The first episode alone proved me wrong.

I normally don't like psychological anime, but Death Note was an exception. Maybe I should look more into this genre.

When I first started off watching anime, I hated mecha genre with a passion, but TTGL changed my mind and became my favorite series of all time (potentially because I didn't think that I would enjoy it at all). Now I'm starting to enjoy Gun X Sword as well so I'm in the odd position of having to reconsider my hatred of mecha anime...
Harems don't exist in America. If one guy is constantly surrounded by beautiful girls, then he's probably the gay friend.

Was prejudiced against the mecha genre, but after watching Code Geass, meh not too shaby. Considering Gurren Lagann atm.
Also, comedy anime generally don't work for me, but I found Ouran High School Host Club, to be funnier than a lot of sitcoms I've seen.

What has the mecha genre ever done to attract so much hate?

I don't dislike any genre, that has nothing to do with me, quality counts the most after all. But I'll bite, MAL says my least favorite genre is supernatural but I like shit like Darker than Black and Mushishi.

Giant humanoid machines is the most illogical and inefficient thing one could conjure. I used to like Gundam too but now I felt mechas is stupid.

I used the wrong term in my previous post. Though I don't hate it but I don't like mecha either.

It is usually either because :

1) people think it's like Transformers or some childhood thing of theirs so they brush it off (I used to be one of these people)

2) the time when the genre was dominating more than even moe and stuff today and they got fed up with it

Mecha. I find this genre really boring.

1st place: Break Blade. It's interesting and enjoyable, despite being mecha.

1st runner-up: Zegapain. It's good when it's not focusing on the mecha.

2nd runner-up: Full Metal Panic. It's good when it's not focusing on the mecha.

--Very true. And right now, I could do with a little more old school mecha and a little less moe, o.k. . . . a lot less . . . but that's just me bitching and complaining because the world isn't doing things my way.

RE: mecha
1) The original meaning of mecha was a reference to mechanical drawings and could be anything from weapons, vehicles, ships, aircraft, to space ships, etc. In the west it has come to mean giant robots.

2) I tend to view the "mecha" as incidental to the story serving simply as tanks or jet fighters. I like "mecha" shows for the settings, political maneuvering, quasi military stuff, and relationships. In most cases, I treat mecha fights the same as any shounen battle sequence - endure it or ignore it until I can get on with the story.

Interestingly, I hardly remember Full Metal Panic! as a "mecha" show.

To add on to my original post I don't hate Mecha anime its just one of my least favorite , it has nothing to do with it being childish I just can't handle too many of the stories associated with them at one time as lisnoire stated they are usually politically and militarily inclined, I find this stuff a little boring at times but still prefer it over mindless ecchi anime, the only reason I didn't post something from that genre is that there really isn't anything it that has stood out to me personally

there fixed that for you lis :D think that is why people hate mecha ;D (or we can just say everybody who hears mecha automaticly thinks gundam... don't say it's not treu hahaha)

not realy hating any genre :-) (ok over the top ecchi can bugger off)

but i just avoid incest like it's the plague... but koi kaze was on a completely diffrent level (and yes i'm looking at you Yosuga no Sora, they could have at least added that note in the synopsis instead of trowing it in your face like that)

it's in the synopsis ;) but appart from that it's not directly obvious it's taking that path hehe so no worry's that you didn't realize untill ep 3 :D

the thing is other shows make it look wrong and just in such narow minded perspective (like most of society looks at it) but koi kaze managed to show all sides of the story (and the hardships comming with it)

My issue with mecha(the big mechs fighting eachother mecha) is that I generally find mechs ugly and prefer situations where people are fighting purely on there own power instead of that of a giant robot. I think that might be a slightly pathetic reason though somehow.

Very different to what was described in here for the reason mecha gets hated, though.
