I wonder how Gon will be able to take Hisoka's badge, considering how fast his reflexes are compared to his somewhat slow fishing rod.

For the first time, I have no complaints. Good episode! It almost made me change the score from a 6 to 7. ALMOST. If they just keep this up...

I'm not sure what to think about Illumi's voice yet, but I know I'll get used to it like with Hisoka's.

And there are these empty eyes. I hate Illumi.

And no Zoom-Effect from Hisoka's finger circle-thingy? For what I understood, he did that to "zoom" (like Netero does).

Episode was ok. Even though I found the BGM once again to be off, when Gon was following Hisoka. It should be something creepy and dark. Not adventurous.

Afraid of the next episode. There'll be sooo many scenes that could be messed up by censoring and bad BGM.

I never had anything against Illumi, but I see why others would dislike/hate him.

And yeah, the bgm always ruins things a bit, even after all these episodes I'm still not completly used to it, and I wish they could just change it >.< (or atleast add a few new and better ones)

I'm worried about next episode too, mostly because I like this one, I don't want the next one to ruin it... oh well, we will see.

Hmmm...This was a really good episode. Loved the way Kurapica came out of nowhere saying "I agree with the latter but can't agree with the former" and then he kicks Tonpa. I'm thinking there could have been more of an epic choice of BGM for that scene but then again, it still had its good side.

I'm also loving Hisoka in this episode and I really forgot that Illumi popped up like that this early in.

Damn, looked through a lot of people's ratings on this anime and I see a lot who give it a low rating. I don't get it because this anime, so far, is following the manga well, besides the omission of the sushi content in the earlier episodes. It may have less violence but that is because of Japan's current censorship so that should be understandable. I was just hoping HxH would get a bigger fan base. I don't know about you guys but I usually decide whether something is worth my time based on the rating and if not for me knowing about HxH, i might have avoided seeing all the ratings people give it. A lot of us are former HxH fans so I'm assuming most of the viewers have seen the original. I guess people are still rating this anime in a comparison to the older one which isn't cool because we all know the older one was epic and that this series is a whole other series under the same name. Ratings should be based on the current anime, not really a comparison on this one and the older one. Giving bias to your rating is misleading, even though this might not be a 10/10 or even a 9/10 at the moment. If you're going to hate an anime, do it because it sucks ass, not because of nostalgia or because "oh man, my favorite scene on shipwreck island was taken out!". Showing objectivity makes one look like they know what they're talking about and gives you more credibility. I know it's sometimes impossible not to compare but try to do this anime justice so we can have a bigger fan base and make this more popular. That's the least we can do to spread HxH's popularity. Heck, we might even get people to watch the original one you all love so much after watching some of this one.

Sorry for this ridiculous rant, just felt like I should stress my thoughts. This is a discussion after all.

This episode was not only the best episode of the new series, but it completely outclassed its version in the 1999 series. It follows the manga to a T; the direction is the same and it's clear that Madhouse intends to use Togashi's visual cues.

If you pay attention, you'll notice that Gon uses a technique that he has no business knowing about yet... ;)

Well, I just now looked at the "Stats" page and the most common score is an '8', with 90% of the scores being a '7' or higher. At face value then that tells me that the overwhelming majority of folks rating it here on MAL think it's at least 'good', and a comfortable super-majority considering it at least 'very good'. So, essentially, I just don't see the problem you're referring to.

I personally have never seen the 'original', nor have I read the manga (and probably never will), so my own personal score of '7' is based solely on what I've seen here, which for the record means just what it means - I think it's good, but not great.

For what it's worth, my son (11) lost interest in the show with the recap episode. I suspect it was the combination of slow pace and not quite clear 'plot', but he didn't give a clear reason.

I may be the only one here who absolutley loves Illumi? :P
One of my joint favourite chracters in the HxH universe - possibly my fav'?

The pacing in this ep was great - very fast with a lot of ground covered; this is possibly the first time the ep' hasn't seemed short.
I hope production keep up the good work, as this was the best ep' to date IMO.

I'm looking forward to seeing Hisoka in full on creepy mode and wondering how this anime manages to capture it.

There are a multitude of polts within this; this series is quite good when it comes to character development - this begining (which reveloves around the exams) is pretty much like a long intro. I better warn you however - if this show follows the manga without too many censorship barriers, it will not only pick up some pace, but it'll get a tad mature too; this could be a good or bad thing.

You know, while watching this episode, I came to a realization that I never had when I watched the original series.

What the hell could Gon have done if Hisoka had put his tag in his pocket or something?

I mean, yeah, we all know that Hisoka is too proud and badass to hide his tag, but just "what if?".

His strategy doesn't work if the tag is hidden.

He just could've changed his way of attack. If HXH teaches anything, then that strategy comes in infinite numbers.

He also could've challenged him to a contest for the tags. With specific rules.
That's pretty much Gon's Style.

I can't wait to see Killua take down that guy that's following him and Hisoka, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio's mess xD. I'm expecting Gon to help them and then it'll be a 3-man team.

Gon is so sweet, helping that one guy who got poisoned :)

Tonpa is annoying though!

Hisoka is a really cool character. This had to be one of the best episodes for him thus far. I like his personality and so calm and collected. I still fear there is no way for Gon to triumph, however, it was more shocking that he didnt do anything to Gon, seriously, there is honestly no way he cant tell Gon is there?

Really hope next episode has more Killua.

It looks like Hisoka might actually fight Kurapica and Leoreo in the next episode, judging from the preview. I don't recall them fighting in the original 1999 version. I haven't read the manga yet but I'm guessing this version sticks to the manga. This is showing some potential now that the violence has been spiced up a bit.

lol as long as he dropped it for a reason but hey, most recaps suck anyways. And lol, he's only 11? He seems to have high standards and taste if that's why he felt like dropping it. When I was 11 I watched shows with no plot like Spongebob and still found it awesome lol.

And yeah, I was half assuming that people were giving it bad ratings because of how they were complaining about how bad it was and how it ruined the original. I'm sort of targeting the people who give it low ratings because of its comparisonI've seen in many of these discussions that people had it rated as a 6 and all that. I just think that when you rate something, it should be done objectively. Kinda embarrassed about the rant I said about it but I felt like I had to get it off my chest.

Why has no one commented on Illumi's new voice? Was I the only one waiting to hear his new voice? =w= I was literally on edge to hear it since last week <__<;

Yay for hot guy voice /shot/. I would have screamed in agony if a woman voiced him again.

Though I was kind of disappointed that they didn't give him a monotone voice to suit his emotionless eyes =3=...

But overall I was happy about the voice *-*

First of all, that wasn't a ridiculous rant, and two... If you want to know why I gave it a low rating: it's the direction style (it's a bit to bland for my taste, and MADHOUSE typhical "change the colors to change the atmosphere" thing always annoyed me in their other anime, like Death Note, One outs, Kaiji etc), the storyboards (lack of good use of angles always bothers me, because good visuals means a lot to me), the bgm, and also: I didn't like the hunter exam that much. I started liking hx h first when I got to the zoldyck family part. So you see, it's not about the lack of gore, the censor parts, most of the changes they made (but I honestly don't like what they did with ep 12) or even that I like the original anime's changes better.
I probably WILL give the remake a higher rating later on, atleast as long as the quality is on the same level as this episode.

lol that's good to hear and it's not only you. I just said 6 because I saw what you said about it and because it was the most recent one that I saw and I needed reference material lol. Didn't mean to attack you that way but most of the time the people who complain and give the anime low ratings compare it to the original and say things like "I liked the darker atmosphere better" or "they censor too much and there's no gore." Basically I was trying to say that you shouldn't be too subjective when you rate something because it can mess up the ratings and some people might not want to pick it up. Thank god the anime has an 8.10 at the moment. Maybe the real haters have either come to like it a little more, stopped complaining, or just dropped it because I haven't seen too much complaining anymore, just a little. I do like the original better but being that I am a HxH fan, I'll accept reboots as long as it doesn't massacre HxH.

Maybe the real haters have either come to like it a little more, stopped complaining, or just dropped it because I haven't seen too much complaining anymore, just a little. I do like the original better but being that I am a HxH fan, I'll accept reboots as long as it doesn't massacre HxH.

Oh no, I didn't feel like you were attacking me at all, I just wanted to say my part as someone who gave it a low score (at the moment) ^^. I too like the original better (mainly because of Furuhashis direction), but I think the remake has it's charming points too, and making a remake is a good way to get more fans, so I too hope that people won't ignore the remake simply because some (me included) can be a bit harsh to it at times (I think that people have gotten harsher with critic and pickier in general, or maybe it's just me who's like that). Anyway, I'm looking forward to see how the anime team will handle h x h from now on :).

Yeah I'm looking forward to see how they handle it too. Also, you aren't the only one who is a harsh critic to HxH 2011. Youtube is full of people complaining about the anime in comparison to the older version. It's all good man and thanks for not taking any offense for my attempt to reference you. It was great hearing your response.

This is what following the manga means. I love that we finally got to see Illumi's real face and his adorable antics. And the first signs of his and Hisoka's friendship. A little disappointed that this phase of the exam was cut down so much - it won't go more than two more episodes to complete it at the pace they're using.

Hope they make it worth it, though.
