What am I currently reading...well, I'm re-reading Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man at the moment as a light read. I've also started reading Edward Rutherford's Russka as I'm curious to see how he treats Russian history overall (which is my area of interest/specialization) :)

Mixing up Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar series with Ursula K Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness - I've got to say, flip-flopping between those two is a bit of a mind-bender.

The Romance of Genji, by Murasaki Shikibu

It was the first edition available in my language and I bought it as soon as it was released. I must agree with Yourcenar when she says "there was never anything better written in any literature"

However, since this is an enourmous 1500 page first volume I can't really take it outside so I read in bus/subway/walking/class and I have to go to my "library" and get a smaller book to read at the same time. =p

This is going to sound stupid, but it's honestly much more fun if you know the synopsis before you read the whole thing. If you get a book of myths in the form of short stories instead, and then read the relevant bits, it's suddenly really enjoyable rather than a slog.

Read that out of my own free will. Couldn't get pass the first 40 or 45 pages, can't remember accurately. I was falling asleep every single time after a paragraph. Then I had my little sister read it to me, and surprisingly, this one of those books that you should hear. But after 2 pages she got tired so I dropped reading it.

Also, couldn't find a good book, so I'm currently reading none.

I am reading The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett -- love it so far. It is just as fun as the movie adaptation (Humphrey Bogart version of course). Old school crime novels are the best.

Ayn Rands Atlas Shrugged.

Bad and ridiculously overlong book. Don't get me wrong, I love tremendoulsy huge doorstoppers - if the pages are used well and for a purpose. Rand doesn't do that. She should keep to essays to getting her goddamned point across. Too bad I find her point ridiculous too, even if well-articulated in Galts speech toward the end (I skipped to it and read it, the whole 63 pages. She could just as well have cut out the other 1154 pages, they're useless).

The characterization is silly and the writing, by the Gods, the writing is so damn bad. At least there seems to be an okay plot.

Well, have to finish it anyway. Might get some extra points of pathos (fat chance) through sheer size.

Also thinking about picking up some John Ringo books, to get a clear picture of exactly how bad literature can possibly be.

Yeah, we had to learn a ton of stuff about ancient greek mythology (read Edith Hamilton's 'Mythology') etc etc.

It doesn't sound stupid btw.
