Ichikawa Reno is chosen as a suitable candidate for the weapon No. 6, which is said to possess the power of "Kaiju No. 6" and said to be "the most powerful and dangerous" weapon . After passing the probationary period imposed by Ogata, the captain of the 4th unit, Reno will be equipped with the weapon and will be facing his first battle. Meanwhile, Furuhashi, who is also a member of the 4th unit, has mixed feelings about Reno's remarkable growth.
Really liked the insights between Reno and Iharu's history together.
The Command center provided some good insights on possible drawbacks of Reno using the weapon.
Looks like Iharu-Senpai has arrived to rescue Reno and taught him to rely on his allies than doing all things by yourself.

That’s two episodes in a row without Kafka and didn’t even feel like we missed a beat because of Reno and Iharu’s relationship. I really like how self contained this felt while also relating to the overall mission of this second half, developing Reno’s character and preparing him to be the JDF’s X factor against Kaiju 9.

I think it’s very sweet that after all the times Reno has saved Iharu and how he’s become Reno’s rival/goal to strive towards, it’s Iharu coming to Reno’s aid this time around against the Honju. Maybe instead of just Reno being the X factor, it’s actually he and Iharu working together that will help turn the tide of the battle for the JDF! Can’t wait to see them both in action next week and Reno hopefully controlling Kaiju number 6’s abilities.

It's brilliant and cruel at the same time that this episode reflects Reno's growth through Furuhashi's stalemate. When someone step into greatness, the other one has to step aside.
After all, there can't be two kings, and this episode is the moment that Furuhashi has to be a queen instead.

I don't know how much stat the new armor gives to Reno but he's 10% sexier.

Oh, and I love this episode commitment to use 2D animation as much as possible. 2D is expensive as hell.

So Iharu was really good in school. But once he left that small bubble, he realized how big the world really is. It's a very painful lesson to learn. But thankfully, it seems like he was able to get out of his rut. He really is a great guy. It was being selfish that was holding him back. But seems like wanting to support another person finally unlocked something in him. That was very satisfying to watch.

Overall kind of a slow episode without Kafka but I still enjoyed it. Reno is still Reno. But it's crazy how strong he is now.

Hoshi night was pretty funny. I wonder how much experience Hoshina has. Maybe he actually dated Mina at some point...? That'd be crazy.

Decent episode, dedicated to both Reno and Iharu. I’m really glad Reno heard Iharu’s voice while unconscious, it saved him from #6 taking over him, snapping him back to reality. I hope they can carry out their plan as intended and emerge eventually victorious!

Man this shit is so mind numbingly cliche. Would it have killed the author to try and sneak in something surprising every once in a while? 7 episodes in and the only one that I sort of enjoyed was the once where what's his name was absorbed. Only because it felt like something happened there. A character presumably died. Otherwise it feels like 6 episodes of the same shit. Characters training/fighting Kaiju, failing, and whining about their inferiority complexes. So tiresome. We're 19 episodes into this show and we're still doing training every episode. I don't want to see this shit anymore. Give me some more intelligent villains and some backstory on Kaiju 9. Anything but this. Anyway, I'm going to stick with it since it's only 4 more episodes left, but man I have 0 interest in watching a hypothetical season 3. I say this as someone who liked season 1.

Btw, what's with the commander explaining to the scientists how the Kaiju weapons unlock the wearer's latent abilities, or whatever was said there? Are the scientists really that clueless?

Power of friendship shoonen tropes are so cringe. Damn, I really liked S1, wonder if I just didn't see it then, or is the S2 just so bad.

Glad that Ichikawa is having trouble using his asspull instead of just being perfect with it immediately. I'm also a fan of Iharu trying to improve, even with all the talented people around him making him feel inferior. Although it's true, I'm not particularly drooling over the show every week, it's very 'fine'.

This is another episode where the character-in-focus is having a mental block and their assigned frenemy/rival saves them and helps them get their head straight. This might make it sound bad, but this, I feel, was executed LEAGUES better than the one with Kafka. That one felt so dumb and idiotic, this one is actually interesting and real. Kafka's was about "what of I lose control" and the resolution "pshaw! even if do lose control, my friends can handle it". In this one, we are addressing actual deep-seated and realistic insecurities of both the characters not thinking themselves good enough.

TL; DR : Gud Episode; still disappointed with the season overall.

Solid episode developing a couple of side characters. Still not a fan of Reno conveniently being able to use the most powerful weapon in existence, but whatever, its to be expected at this point for a shounen battle series. Would have been better if was given to a current captain or was used to introduce a new character, but you gotta keep Reno relevant somehow while the MC is already leagues above everyone that's not a captain now, so might as well give him this giant power up.

I find it interesting that so many people liked season 1 better when there was so much more annoying whining from Kafka despite being an adult. While I think Isao got killed off too quickly for anyone to become attached enough to care, the willingness to kill off characters for the sake of the plot and the toning down of middle school style yelling from the MC makes this season better than season 1 imo.

One of the best episodes of the season imo, I thought it was really interesting seeing the effects of a numbered kaiju weapon on Ichikawa as he got crazier and crazier, and I also really liked how much more this characterized both Ichikawa and Iharu, especially Iharu who didn’t have much focus until now. What happened to Iharu is a sad thing, he came from a world where he was on top but quickly realized that there are many folks even higher above him, but I’m glad by the end he learned to accept that and decided to help Ichikawa when he was down, and in the process Ichikawa was helped out of his obsession with doing things on his own.

I also thought the ice powers of No. 6’s weapon were really cool (pun not intended lol), it doesn’t seem as OP as some of the other numbers weapons we’ve seen but I think that’s mainly because it’s the first time Ichikawa has used the weapon in action, and we’ve yet to see its maximum potential.

Yes it is, shit feels wack af this whole season. It's like every sound effect is on semi mute or at like 20% volume or whatever the fuck, plus the random sounds as well.

Couldn't care less about the redhead NPC and the "I wanna get stronger" type character and their struggles during training. It's funny how ridiculously obvious it was that Reno would gain powers related to cold, since he chose to shoot ice bullets (which no one else uses for some reason) in S1. What wasn’t very obvious is that No. 6 used cold, even though its appearance and description in ep 6 hinted it probably could control kaiju, not temperature.

What a fall from grace this show has experienced.
It went from a simple, fun and action packed story to a snooze fest where everything is too dramatic. It takes itself waaayyyy too serious.
The only thing characters do now is talk about getting stronger to protect friends, power percentages and jog while wearing a white shirt.
Also the sound quality is absolute ass, i dont now what happened but as others above said, it sounds really bad.

@poemofdevil I enjoy this anime, especially the first season was hype af, and this is starting to feel a little MHA now.. but it's still not that bad yet. We've gone from needing just No.8 to needing the rest of the numbered weapons and the strengths of the core cast so ofc it's going to have to cover their development as well. I know it feels a bit rough for a 12 episode season but hang in there.

@0451 Hoshina's backstory, as I recall, kind of suggests he's not only got some family strife, but trains his butt off to keep up with a world that's made his kind of kaiju fighting almost obsolete versus when it was probably the standard hundreds of years ago when his family first came to prominence. And his dynamic with Mina is more respect, since she was willing to accept him as her vice captain when most people would dismiss him as too old school.

His little quip about 200 kinds of love feels like he just read it somewhere and said it to sound profound, much like the idea of "everyone's love is different", which also sounds profound, but is kind of hollow. Not Brian Griffin hollow, but Soshiro's always been snarky, arguably in a way intended to protect himself

Was never a fan of this series but man, this episode really exposed how weak the supporting cast of this show is for me when its away from Kafka tbh. This isn't the worst episode in a vacuum, but with characters that I don't care to even be excited or intrigued for outside the MC or other major characters, its so dry. There are a lot of other shounen anime or shows with the MC not being in the spotlight and other characters having time to shine and develop, but those experiences from what I remember at least were a lot better than this. Reno maybe can be considered one of the 'major' ones but hasn't really felt that way outside the first couple episodes to me. I don't know, this was such a slog and one of the more lifeless experiences I've felt when watching an episode in recent memory.

To think that snow fairy wood use more snow, absolute writing. 2eps for side character "development" (friendship power) - and its not over, what a joke. It could be done in 1ep, or even half.

I feel like its just lazy writing, with combat tactics "luke use the force".

Also guys, Kafka not being in an episode is nothing new, S1 did this too. Last ep and this one have necessary world building and development

Cool fight and all, but I feel the Defense Force is pushing things too fast, fearful of this attack from No.9 that is going to occur any day now. It just seems too much is riding on Reno's ability to sync with the No.6 weapon.

So Kikoru is gonna be sidelined or what? And instead of getting more of her char development, we get it for random npcs that honestly, I think a lot people even forget they exist and on top of that, lets give one of the strongest Kaiju Number weapons to one of them. We don't even get to see what the number weapons even do... Reno just goes from I can do a lil bit of freeze to being able to freeze more.
