Some more bonding time between Hikaru and Yoshiki this episode. It's interesting to see how much emotions and human behavior Hikaru continues to show in this series. Seems he even feels guilt.

Hikaru's mental state is explored again and it's crazy what he showed on screen.

On another note, the school has a choir competition.

“You became home to me” y’all.. I just can’t. This episode was just perfection. The tension, the unease, the gradual build up to Yoshiki’s “betrayal”, you knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when. It’s the waiting that kills you as they say and CyGames did a great job of making that big moment feel so visceral and heartbreaking. This is such a big turning point in this story and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

“Wanna ditch school today?” Death flag activated! I knew there was zero chance things would stay the same between our fave gays this week, but I didn’t expect Yoshiki to make his move so soon. It just shows you how truly scared he was not for himself, but for his family too. If ‘Hikaru’ went after Asako so easily, who knows what he’d do to others.

It’s like he wanted to give ‘Hikaru’ the happiest day ever before taking him out. Fave movie, ice cream, snacks.. I was just on the edge of my seat the whole time because I knew this wasn’t gonna end well. Then he started calling his mom and told her he loved her basically.. classic death flag. You can peep Yoshiki falter for a minute when Hikaru says he wanted to go see the ocean one day. That one line was just too much like OG Hikaru and made Yoshiki wonder if he could somehow work this out after-all..

The way ‘Hikaru’ genuinely wanted to go to the school concert and sing with his classmates. Further emphasises he’s just a little kid on the inside and all this is so new to him! Like Yoshiki says later on, he latched onto the first person he saw basically and that’s become his frame of reference for the world, but he’s still learning.

Then of course, our big moment which was just masterfully done. The school concert video playing while Yoshiki unzips the bag and goes for the kill, the realisation he failed, then the self loathing did not being able to teach Hikaru better. Incredible. The thing is though, Yoshiki DID teach Hikaru better. The fact Hikaru understands WHY Yoshiki is so afraid of him and how serious he must be to ask him to kill him shows he can learn and grow. Literally ripping out half of himself to give to Yoshiki, more gay symbolism, but also showing just how much he’s willing to give up to put Yoshiki at ease. If that ain’t love idk what is!

The ending scene of ‘Hikaru’ consuming Yoshiki is so chilling, yet beautiful. Almost as if they’re becoming one now that Yoshiki has abandoned all reservations about ‘Hikaru’. Notice the symbolism of the light as well. It separates them initially before dimming as they accept each other for who they are. Yoshiki realizes he and ‘Hikaru’ are from two different worlds and they’re different, but he loves him in spite of all of that, flaws and all. Aka, true love. Incredible episode.

Holy shit, this episode!!! Fascinating approach to adapting that sequence. This episode only adapted the remaining 24 pages from chapter 16, so not even a full chapter (so far episodes adapted around 2-3 chapters). It's like 70% anime original.

I really liked how they interpreted that moment where "Hikaru" is freaking out after Yoshiki stabbed him. When Yoshiki asks for "Hikaru" to kill him, "Hikaru" considers it cause it's "Yoshiki's request" (an interesting parallel to him hearing out Hikaru's last wish...) So far he's been trying to follow Yoshiki's lead. "Hikaru" doesn't understand humanity, so apart from his own instincts guiding him (often in destructive ways), his only reference of what he's supposed to do and what he's not supposed to do is what Yoshiki tells him. But here, he actually thinks for himself cause despite not fully understanding the value of human life, he doesn't want Yoshiki to die.

Ahh, I wasn't expecting a choir competition. Now I understand the teacher's frustration with the students

Its seems like Asako lost her ability to hear ghosts?

It seemed like they went to watch HxH at the movies lol

Hikaru being alive is nothing but torture for Yoshiki, because things will never be the same. I truly feel for Yoshiki.

I wonder what happened to the note Yoshiki found in Hikaru's room in the previous episode.

I felt uneasy this entire episode lol

Hikaru just sitting there with a knife deep inside of him was funny lol

Wow, what an episode. Oh my god.

Damn that last scene hit so hard for no reason. Yoshiki planning that whole hanging out with "Hikaru" thing, just to go back to his house and kill him was actually insane to me. Yoshiki's request to "Hikaru" was sad, this episode felt like a goodbye or suicide note. It was depressing seeing Yoshiki ask "Hikaru" to kill him. If rolling credits play at the end, you know the episode it good.

It really did, him calling his mom one last time, looking at that one happy family picture and apologizing to them in his thoughts... he was saying goodbye to life, and that request was gut-wrenching.

I am surprised and amazed how much anime original content added to the build up of this episode.
We finally wrapped up that choir arch anime version added themselves, and the full song is beautiful . We even have Hikaru solo version of it.
Yes the pacing is definitely slower than usual, but i think it's worth it since the manga doesn't has many chapters anyway.
As source reader it's nice to see all those extra scenes/ dynamic of other side characters too.

The choir song was really good ✨❤️

Yoshiki's trying so hard to be sane and he has finally managed to land the final blow to Hikaru even affer knowing that it wouldn't kill him.
But Hikaru went out of his way to show Yoshiki that he would try his best to hold himself back from killing people by giving a half of him to Yoshiki.

Yoshiki could never get rid of this guy..😭😭

Just re-watched, it's just so PEAK

They really did that moment justice. It always leaves me with that conflicting feeling of "how can something so unsettling be so sweet in a way?". I think this series does a really good job of bringing the viewer into the madness of it all. It's such a strange form of comfort, accompanied by the feeling of inevitable doom.

Yep after last episode knew it was time for their turning point. The whole episode had that feeling of something was about to happen and it did, Yoshiki stabbed Hikaru but ofc he didn't die. Hikaru has come far though, staying calm in that situation, understanding what he's lacking that he doesn't value life enough and even giving half of himself to Yoshiki so he is now severely weakened which doesn't bode well as the that sunglass guy is closing in. I also don't see a happy end for these guys after this episode.

I stopped reading the manga as soon as i heard the anime was coming out, can someone tell me if Hikaru ever gets his "half of insides", the xiphoid process (sternum tip) that they gave SO MUCH DETAIL 😅. like in dying to know, i dont need context nor explanation just yes or no, does he become whole again?

Also i could NOT be Yoishiki cause my first instinct would be "can i eat this?" 💀

After Yoshiki and 'Hikaru' skipped the choir, the choir suddenly sounded good. So, really, they were the problem all along! lol

Yoshiki wasn't mad at 'Hikaru' for attacking Asako, he was scared. Though, I liked how the anime let us know that the real plan wasn't to kill 'Hikaru' but to just die.

'Hikaru' is more heartbroken that Yoshiki wants to die than Yoshiki wanting to kill him. He's terrified Yoshiki may be making a wish to die. In ep 4, 'Hikaru' had mentioned he'd grant any wish Yoshiki has. This conflicts with his own desires and Hikaru's original wish to keep Yoshiki alive and happy. "Hikaru" exists for Yoshiki. Everything he wants to experience, all the things he associates with being human, all the places he recalls from Hikaru's memories, he only wants to experience them with Yoshiki.

"Hikaru's" true identity got foreshadowed! WTF! I was so not expecting that!
Beach chapter also got foreshadowed! Talking about that chapter in this particular episode shows such a strong sense of understanding of the story. It really makes me trust the director so much more.

In a bonus manga chapter, "Hikaru" had said he'd given Yoshiki a rib, but I assumed the chapter was just a joke. I didn't think he'd actually break off a piece of this sternum! They made the scene feel so much more painful than the manga, even though the manga scene already felt so bone-chillingly painful.

"Hikaru" has halved his powers to let Yoshiki trust him, to make sure Yoshiki won't want to die. It's intimate and beautiful! But, two episodes ago, Tanaka had sent a hunting dog to find "Hikaru," so was that a good decision? Damn that dramatic irony!!!!!!

I guess this is where Yoshiki truly accepts "Hikaru" as a different being, and gets mixed. Well, at least that's what it felt like from the way things were directed.

They made a small change from the manga in the scene where blood-covered Yoshiki is talking with halved "hikaru" which is that Yoshiki, who was sitting on the bed with "Hikaru" in the manga, is now sitting on the floor. Such a small change, but such an amazingly artistic direction! Anime doesn't have panels, so to create the same emotions as the manga, they need to re-position things, and they do it so well here!

Love how they don't just animate the panels and dialogues. They meticulously explore it and try to create the same feeling as the manga here!

Yoshiki trying to kill his happiness and himself for others' sake...
This episode made me cry. The ED where Yoshiki and Hikaru sang together completely broke me! Can't believe the first anime to make me cry is a horror! haha

Well, I guess the detective was just hype for nothing. Yoshiki is going with Hikaru on his self-discovery journey, to find out what Hikaru really is, where he belongs, and eventually bring him there. Apparently, it all wraps up with a happy ending. All’s well that ends well.

@Skuvan A little early to draw conclusions, he launched something at Hikaru, a sniffer, let it sniff. Pretty sure the next one or the one after will start getting deeper into the hunter arc. This one was more of a "Can Yoshiki handle the fact that Hikaru might kill humans" episode imo.

Honestly, bruv, I’m just chatting out my arse. The episode left me speechless, so I couldn’t think of anything to write and just spouted random nonsense, haha. I know it’s still early to draw conclusions, and I’m excited for the upcoming episodes.

Yeah, I was told in one of the previous episode forums that the detective was introduced earlier than in the manga. But if we’re now approaching his actual manga debut, as you said (in volume three), then I’m super excited to see what he’s going to show us anime viewers in the upcoming episodes.

It's really a bit sad. Some people don't care about characters and their development, smooth development of events, slow, tensing. Immersion in the atmosphere, small details... Even with Asako there were hints from the first episode, for example. But people need action, speed. I wouldn't be surprised if the exorcist was introduced so early in the anime for people like that.

At this point in the story, Tanaka was just introduced in the manga recently. But even in the manga there was a brief pause in his subplot to let this whole Asako getting attacked by "Hikaru" situation get resolved without distractions. That being said, the stuff happening here is kinda important for what happens in Tanaka subplot. Don't want to spoil anything though so I'll leave it at that.

That gives new meaning to the phrase "putting body and soul into something" (no, not the choir, sorry kids).
Yoshiki's more suicidal than homicidal anyway, the whole ordeal felt more like his last day than Hikaru's. I was thinking, if the relationship might be used as metaphor for the stages of grief, he'd be on full acceptance now. Precious emo gay boy must be protected at all costs 🔪
The music piece during the scene was beautiful. There were some original additions and details in the episode, but the result is near perfect.

RIP Asako's right ear, still better than RIP Asako - period.

Made me tear up...
Giving Hikaru a great day of happy memories he wanted before stabbing him... and yet being each others only vice and friend and person, Yoshiki can not give him up no matter what... relatable.
Though he has quite a lot of people at school who want to be his friend, if he reveals his purposeful connections towards this monster/queerness, Yoshiki probably thinks its likely they'd feel differently. I think that's why he said goodbye to his mother and father too, though more likely bc he was planning a murder.
this ep set up some sort of plot line too rather than Yoshiki wavering, though I do enjoy as well
Really really liked the school song ontop of these summer scenes just aesthetically, the union of these young adults melancholic voices is always a part I enjoy of school animes.
Also some symbolism I noticed of Hikaru being the white snake wrapping Yoshiki and his sister in that photo on his phone.. I hope she doesn't die. or maybe shes just gay too

It’s always interesting in horror stories when the human can out-scare the monster and Psuedo-Hikaru was thoroughly unnerved over the course of his date with Yoshiki, and it turned out to be well-founded. Hopefully, he now appreciates the idea of not killing people because they annoy you lol

@ubshii It's funny even.
They're ok with One Piss/ Naruto taking their sweet time in 600~1000 episodes but they can't wait for 6 episodes.
A lot of them as long as there's combat/ cool animation they think the plot is progressing, otherwise they think nothing happened lolz.
Like seriously there's not a single filler episode in this show. Every episode something bad happened, yet they still feel bored.
I think this is not the genre for them at all , donnu why they keep watching.

With Yoshiki having half of the monster "Hikaru", I can imagine all of those country psychics would flag him too, maybe even Asako.(haven't read the manga)

The rest of your manga panel points are very interesting too,
thanks!

feels really repetitive, I don't entirely dislike it -- I love the story, just not a fan of the pace of its progression.

Yoshiki keeps repeating these micro cycles of going against "Hikaru", to then falling back into each others' arms. There's only so many instances of this repeating that I can endure.

The whole episode was entirely predictable for me. Entirely. Sorta bummed
