Rudolf did the best she could, but even all that begging and pleading wasn’t enough to get Oguri into the race… officially, that is, because she still did end up racing, just, you know, not on the leaderboard xD

She might not have taken home first place, but in our hearts, she totally did—and that’s what really matters. Amazing race, and honestly some really solid cuts this episode. Not gonna lie, animation-wise, this might be up there with the best of the season so far.

Anyway, that’s a wrap for the second arc, now on to the next and final one of the cour… it’s the White Lightning’s time to shine.

Lol, they really played me there. I thought Oguri was running in the Japanese Derby this whole time, and not to mention the way they kept the camera angles going made it perfectly seem like they were all at the same racecourse, plus the announcer having the same voice.

I'll have to give it to Rudolf, as she did her best to let Oguri run in the Japanese Derby, but the rules never bent for her.

I knew Sakura would be the underdog who would suddenly sweep the victory and surprise everyone. They gave a clear hint with her race score last episode.

I'm happy for both Oguri for winning the New Zealand Trophy championship and Sakura for winning the Japanese Derby. That said, I still would have loved to see Oguri win the Japanese Derby instead.

Now that arcs have shifted, I'm guessing we'll see more of Tamamo, and hopefully Joe comes back soon. I'm already missing him and Oguri together.

Nice job, CygamesPictures. Nice job for deceiving us. Oguri Cap in the Nippon Derby was Symboli Rudolf's imagination all the time. One point to notice that it was an imagination, Oguri Cap was the only one who was wearing a tracksuit in the Derby. With this level of competition, even if she was new to the competition or how short notice it was, she should have had some kind of fancy idol-ish costume for the race.
In the end, the rules are the rules. Even Symboli Rudold couldn't persuade the association to let Oguri Cap race in the Nippon Derby. They promised that they would try to amend the rules. At least, there were some developments.

Oh wow, so practically the whole episode we get faked out the whole time that Oguri Cap actually got approved to race in the Japanese Derby.

As someone who didn't know she actually didn't get to race in the Japanese Derby her first time around, this was an amazing fake out, making you believe the whole time that all those petition signatures actually worked and the board approved of the once in a lifetime decision to break the rules... all for it to be a fever dream made up by Symboli Rudolf instead.

Meanwhile, Oguri Cap just casually winning a G2 race by 7 lengths in the New Zealand Trophy G2 race LOL.

Sakura Chiyono O crying for her win though was very cute.

Also the end of the episode, we're going to be going through different "Arcs" during her time at Tracen huh?
This just only being the National Debut Arc and next episode starting her arc against Tamamo Cross?

(No Oguri Cap eating in the cafeteria this episode ☹️, but there was an official drawn illustration in commemoration of the episode where she was eating tho!)

Overall it's a well executed, intense episode with a great backing by Kenji Kawai's OST.

I think a missed opportunity was showing that Rudolf's last few years were depressing. Maybe they are saving that for another episode.

A few chapters into the Star Blossom manga, and I'll fight for the happiness of all horse girls having "Sakura" in their name. Maruzensky seeing her "son" fulfilling her dream was awesome.

The dream sequence needed some careful execution though, because it kinda undermines the side cast.

My fav, the Overlord makes her appearance!!!!! I now want a recapture of the RTTT moment as an epilogue for this show.

Well, they have already teased the arc with Tamamo Cross, didn't think it would happen this cour.

Does this look like the face of mercy?

Edit: also my beautiful Mr. CB, speak once in a while.

I mean Oguri being the only one arriving in her gym clothes was a dead giveaway something was up and we didn't get focus on her during the race either. I was wondering if Oguri was dreaming it or was it Rudolf with a hallucination/what if scenario and it was the later. I mean I knew the rules wouldn't be changed so fast for her, just before the race at that which would unfair to the others as the chairman mentioned but still somehow feeling a bit bumped out. The rules are changing though and Oguri can always race on the next derby. Looking forward to that.

She indeed broke the rules nevertheless as she declared.

The broodmare Shill was pregnant with a foal by Nijinsky when she was sold at auction and purchased by a Japanese buyer, bringing her from the United States to Japan. Although Maruzensky himself was born in Japan, the rules at the time classified him as a foreign-bred horse, which meant he was ineligible to run in many of the major races, including the Japanese Classic Triple Crown (Satsuki Sho, Japanese Derby, Kikuka Sho).

Despite this, once he debuted as a racehorse, Maruzensky remained undefeated in all eight of his starts before retirement. Except for two races where he won by a narrow margin, he won every other race by at least seven lengths. In the 1970s, Japan was swept up in a craze for supercars, and his overwhelming strength earned him a nickname inspired by them. (Although, given his origins, shouldn't he be called a "muscle car" instead?)

As race week approached, his regular jockey, Seiichi Nakanowatari, who had ridden him in all eight races, became desperate to find a way for Maruzensky to run in the Japanese Derby despite being ineligible. It’s said he pleaded, "Please let him run in the Derby. He can start from the far outside gate. He won’t get in the way of any other horse. We don’t even need the prize money. I just want to prove how good he is." However, it’s unclear who exactly he made this appeal to.

Among the horses that challenged Maruzensky was one named Hishi Speed. His owner was Masanobu Abe, whose son Masaichiro would go on to own Hishi Amazon, Hishi Akebono, and Hishi Miracle. Hishi Speed came within a nose of defeating Maruzensky, finishing a close second. However, in the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes, he was soundly beaten and again finished second by a wide margin. This left a strong impression on Masaichiro, prompting him to shift his strategy with the realization that "The age of foreign-bred horses has arrived." This change in direction ultimately led to the discovery and success of Hishi Amazon and Hishi Akebono, both of whom later appeared in the Umamusume franchise.

While I felt sad for Oguri Cap, this is how it was supposed to go. The real reason being.. Sakura Chiyono O is the real winner of the Japanese Derby.

What I always loved about Uma Musume is how accurate it was. Even tho' it's a make-believe story in a world where horse girls exist, they follow the real life horse's history.

For instance, Maruzensky is a foreign descent horse, and at that time they weren't allowed to participate in the Classics. However one if his offspring is Sakura Chiyono O, which eventually won the Japanese Derby, a race his father couldn't enter. Special Week is also a descendant of Maruzensky.

As for the bait scene in this episode, I admit it got me fooled. At first I thought she participated as a guest, without being awarded the win even if she did win, a sort of condition imposed by the Board. But after rewatching the episode, I noticed all the hints. When she was entering the gates, the other racers had those numbered shirts like the one she had. When the Derby started, you couldn't see her in the lineup. They did a great job with this episode, probably one of the best in the Uma Musume franchise.

Ahaha… I thought it seemed weird Oguri Cap was just racing in the Japanese Derby with little to no buildup or strategizing by Roppei, I will admit I was happily deceived lol. But I really love this plot twist, it really subverted my expectations, it seemed like by the direction of the previous episode that Oguri would end up in the derby, and I thought she would lose even lol, but that turned out to be an impossible reality, the rules could not simply be altered for one horse on such short notice, real life wins over writing again lol. I gotta say tho, my hat is off to you Rudolf, all the way back to Season 1 I never really was a big fan of you, but you won me over here in Cinderella Gray, you realized the error of your ways and fought tooth and nail for Oguri, it may not have had immediate results but it’s what triggered a big change in the rules.

And man it really is something that Rudolf herself didn’t even go to the derby, not to downplay Sakura Chiyono O’s win but it really does go to show that it wasn’t as exciting as it could have been, it could be because Oguri is the MC but man could you imagine if she actually smoked the actual Classics racers lol, they had me believing it until the reveal. But man what a cool episode this was, I think it was well done but I can see it pissing some people off at the same time, for me tho this was awesome, I’m excited to see what this White Lightning arc holds since the show has been peak Uma Musume until now, it’s just a shame that I think this arc might be paused in the middle of it since this is a split cour, but I guess we’ll see about that, idk how long the arc is lol.

And lastly, cool to see TM Opera O at the end there, I just watched Road to the Top recently because I missed it back in Spring 2023 so I really like getting to see her again.

Edit: I realized a day later thanks to reading someone else’s post that Rudolf actually was at the derby, the Oguri race just happened later lol, the way the scenes played out kinda confused me on that.

ITS SOOOO PEAAKKKKKK, ABSOLUTE FUCKING CINEMAAAA, MY PERSONAL ANIME OF THE YEAR ALREADY. rollercoaster of feelings in this episode.

Every scene Tama-chan appears I always look forward to the Tama-chan vs Oguri match, Tamamo's aura is too strong and the Emperor Rudolf sees the person who deserves to stand next to Tamamo is Oguri.

My appreciation for Rudolf in this episode is huge, I like how Rudolf still insists on including Oguri in the Nippon Derby match, but ...

They hyped up the Japan Derby so much it made me sweat, seeing Chiyo-chan and Muteki in epic outfits made me can't wait for Oguri's and it turns out Oguri wasn't wearing her Derby outfit? I was thinking oh is this an excuse so she can race in the Japanese Derby lol.

I was hoping that Muteki could win the Japanese Derby this time but, I was completely jebaited by the directors for this amazing episode, they made me drop my jaw I already believed that Oguri would win this but it turned out that this was all a what if... imagined by the Emperor Symboli Rudolf, you got me directors-san.

Chiyo-chan winning the Nippon Derby makes me really proud of her, the fact that what Rudolf said about how a powerful technique to win the Nippon Derby is "Luck" and is the fact that Oguri didn't compete in the Nippon Derby the "Luck" that Chiyono O got? but again this is all the result of Chiyo-chan's hard work so far, I even cried when I saw Chiyo-chan and Maruzensky crying.

Although Oguri was not allowed to participate in the Nippon Derby but Oguri still managed to make the rules and priorities were destroyed by Oguri's two feet as Oguri said in front of the Emperor herself and Oguri managed to prove it. YOOO T.M. OPERA O. PEAAAKKKKK.

Oguri Cap's speech at the end brought tears to my eyes, the thought of Oguri's two biggest goals not being accomplished made my heart break but, no matter what Oguri still wouldn't give up and the path she took was the result of her own feet whether it was the past or the future she would still run for the best.

This episode ends the First Arc/Chapter of the Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray. The End Credit scene featuring Tama-chan Aura Farming MAKES ME CAN'T WAIT FOR CHAPTER 2: WHITE LIGHTNING ARC, the second chapter will be so peak I'm sure. 10/10 EPISODE, 10/10 ANIMATION, 10/10 DIRECTIONS, 10/10 OSTs, 10/10 VOICE ACTING, ANIME OF THE YEAR (SO FAR).

Maru out of Derby is a result of local bloodline protection in JP then: classics races like Derby is often considered as a battle for breeding(therefore geldings are banned from the majority of classics worldwide except HK whose almost all of horses are gelded), and back to Maru or cingray era JP local bloodline is still relatively weak against foreign ones, therefore there was a restriction against foreign-bred horses in classics then, but after JP import Sunday Silence(most of umas post S2 era have his blood) there is finally a strong enough bloodline, and then the bloodline restrictions in JRA(central) are graudally lifted which finished about 2008, but there is still a large gap of breeding between JRA and NAR(local), therefore nowadays many NAR-run races still restrict JRA runners
there are also 2 by-products of race participate restriction bcs of bloodline protection:
1. an int'l recognized G1 shouldn't exist any such restrictions at all, therefore before 2008 some JRA G1s(especially classics) are not int'l recognized and the most of NAR races known in uma as G1 are actually JPN1 which are gradeless in int'l means
2. NHK mile cup is originally founded as a special classics race open to foreign-bred horses(like El Condor Pasa), but as there is no restrictions anymore now it becomes an alternative classics for milers

Welp, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who got fooled by how this episode played out in making some of us thinking that Oguri Cap got to race in the G1 Japanese Derby. It was odd that she raced in her usual gym uniform, but I chalked that off for thinking that there wasn't enough time for her to get a new outfit for her to wear before the race.

Either way, how CyGamesPictures played this episode out in terms of structure was really well done. The plot twist was used with great effect as we see how things unfolded after Symboli Rudolph made her bid for Oguri Cap to be allowed to race in the Japanese Derby. Ultimately, she was unsuccessful, but her efforts weren't in vain as the chairwomen did promise that she will do her best to get the rules changed for the better.

As for the race itself, Sakura Chiyono O put on a stellar effort to win the Japanese Derby and her emotions after winning really showed how much it meant to her. Maruzensky was also really proud of her performance as well. Not forgetting, Oguri Cap did race in the G2 New Zealand Trophy race at the same racecourse, albeit a shorter distance, but it did help to do its part to help trick some of us viewers into thinking she was in the G1 race instead.

For an added bonus, not only did we see TM Opera O while Rudolph was busy reminiscing, but we also got a short post credit scene of Tamamo Cross being pretty intimidating with the electricity around her. With this arc done and the next one coming up, it's only a matter of time before Oguri Cap has to take her on. Now that's a battle that I really want to see very soon! =D

PERFECTION.
Best episode so far, it was just as shocking as the manga, even knowing the plot it still broke all my expectations, amazing fkng job from the team adapting this, CygamesPictures is the GOAT.

Sakura Chiyono O my beloved, one of my favorite umas by far 🥰❤️
I love how they show her relationship with Maruzensky.

For those who don't know... Maruzensky was the father of Sakura Chiyo O, that's why they are so close in the UmaMusume world.
Symboli Rudolf was the father of Tokai Teio, that's why Teio admires Rudolf so much, but Rudolf never acted that proud of her because of her personality, unlike how Maru does for Chiyono 🥰

Btw I loved how for like 1 frame they referenced the cover of the 4th volume of the manga, that was sick.

Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~

Great episode. I also was fooled, but I just thought I had mixed up the race names, lol. I didn't notice the jersey difference, so I didn't realize it until the scene with people who have no idea how to run a progressive business denied Oguri Cap's entry.

So frustrating that they didn't let Oguri Cap compete. You know when exceptions are made? When there is an exceptional circumstance (athlete, in this case.) It is literally in the fucking name. Exceptions for the exceptional. Not fair to other racers? Too bad. You are not exceptional. Oh, well. It is good for the shows drama anyway.

Man this episode’s writing is so terrible. The Oguri Cap twist makes no sense; the Twinkle Series is a series about fan appeal so why would the URA so blatantly ignore what the audience want just because of something that was entirely out of Oguri’s control. Rudolf should’ve started trashing the URA in the press

@ajw215799 Well that's just how it went in real life. People wanted Oguri to run in the Japanese Derby but Oguri's trainer missed the registration date and so Oguri was unable to compete, instead having to take part in different competitions.
