This looked great, character designs very comparable to After the Rain as it's the same author. OP song also got some style.

Both characters Reiko and Kudou seems like decent people with relatable personalities. Kudou might be misunderstood from the surface but a down to earth guy. Their chemistry seems like the main part of the first episode. There's a few teasing moments but it's just the first episode..plenty of time to develop their characters. Oh and the setting, Kowloon Walled City has a mystique vibe to it given its history.

Reiko’s design was chef’s kiss as it is, and yeah, the adaptation really did make sure it stays the way it is. If anything, I’m impressed with the colouring, I mean it gives you the sense that the story is actually taking place somewhere as densely populated and polluted as Kowloon walled city. Though they started the episode as if this series is going on for years and we as viewers already know what to expect, but yeah, I mean that’s how the first chapter is lol. Also yeah, it really does feel like the story is set-up in a different timeline altogether where people have no problems whatsoever with something that floats above their city and looks like a satellite in itself lmao.

All this talk about nostalgia and stuff which does give a sense of mystery about Kudou, is I think enough for any girl to feel the hots for him… I mean girls love mysterious guys lol. Though we’ll see more of that going forward, as for now the episode itself gave a basic idea of how this series is going to be moving forward. A sense of doubt, dystopia, engaging interactions and LOTS of fanservice( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°). Reiko’s in love with Kudou from the first episode itself too, so yeah, that is going to be a thing too

Just hope the later stuff doesn't turn off anyone lol. Great premiere, but yeah, this is some serious pace, I MEAN THEY ADAPTED THE WHOLE OF FIRST VOLUME IN THE FIRST EPISODE ITSELF!!!!!! Guys slow it down lol.

This was one of my most anticipated shows of the season.. I say was because the minute I heard this was going to somehow adapt ELEVEN volumes into just thirteen episodes... yeah, I had lost all hope there lol. Though, I still have a little bit of hope left in me. I mean, I recently watched After the Rain, another one of author's anime which, what do you know, was also a complete adaptation, and that one honestly had a great ending, so maybe... just maybe.

So anyways, what even made this so interesting in the first place you say? Well I mean, first off, I love the old retro style of the whole thing, and second of all, the plot is actually mad interesting. I mean, for starters, it's not set in Japan?!?! What is this?!?! And even better as well, their both adults?!?!... Again, WHAT IS THIS?!?! Them being adults should be more than enough, but nah, also throw into the mix the fact that they are both adults, and yeah, this has all the makings to be a great show...

... That would be, if it wasn't for the fact that this one episode adapted ALL OF VOLUME ONE. Yes, SIX whole chapters into ONE EPISODE. And mind you, the first two chapters are longer than normal, so it's ten times worse. I'll give them this though, they actually handled it better than I expected tbh. But if we're gonna keep on with this one volume per episode trend, then I think we know how this'll end.

So far... so GOOD??!?! YO WHAT IS THIS?!??! LMAOOOO.

SO far, VERY good content wise, just more sad that they'll rush some things here and there, but yeah. Anime onlies will probably enjoy this a lot if they continue like this.

P.S. Banger OP and OST.

Mangaka Jun Mayuzuki is back for her 2nd anime adaptation after Winter 2018's Koi wa Ameagari no You ni a.k.a After the Rain, and she does the thought-provoking themes well, just as is with her recent work of Kowloon Generic Romance, which has been one of the most forthcoming mature romance stories of its genre.

Wednesday Campanella's OP is rather inviting into what the series is all about, and a total banger song.

Set in the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong, with the rather sci-fi bit of the Generic Terra government-funded project, this is 32-year-old Reiko Kujirai's life, though both her and the coworker of Hajime Kudo working at a real estate company, they unfortunately don't get along well. But aside from Reiko's rather poor eyesight, which Reiko uses eyedrops from Hebinuma Pharmaceuticals, and the poor facilities of Kowloon, it has that nostalgic feel, though between the two, there is that nostalgia feel as well.

A day's work thereafter sees Hajime bringing Reiko to the hidden street food alleyways of Kowloon, and one particular goldfish restaurant that Hajime is a regular to. Of course, Reiko doesn't think much of the nostalgic feel, though Hajime's actions only prove that something weird is going on. The repainting at Sai Jeong tower for Reiko, got her all worked up to the point of collapse, until Hajime stepped in to assist her.

mekakushe's ED is good, as Hajime unintentionally plants a kiss with Reiko (her being in love with him), though he only emits case of a mistaken identity. But the picture that Hajime has with his ex...which turns out to be Reiko herself, or rather the Reiko of the past having an engagement with him, what exactly is going on with the fake Earth that's got to do with Generic Terra?

Yeah, the claim to "adapt the whole story" in 13 episodes is NOT misleading, it's basically speedrunning the manga and only showing what's relevant for the anime's limited runtime (as is adapting the entire Volume 1 for the premiere episode here). Yelp...

The super dense Kowloon Walled City. Well, the actual complex was completely demolished in 1994.
I think the mystery behind Reiko's memory is related to that floating satellite-ish thing.

I went in totally blind, so I have no idea what’s going on—but it definitely looks interesting.

The characters' personalities and their designs are beautiful.

When he saved her hot and sweaty body, kissed her, then just tossed her aside after she woke up—I think those were the best scenes for me this episode.

In the end, it seems like Kudou was engaged to someone who looks like Kujirai… or maybe they are the same person?

Even without sci-fi element, this anime is gonna be fine on its own, no one can deny the charm of Hong Kong vibe. But maybe sci-fi will make this even better, it's too soon to say.

Watching Hong Kong movies, having relatives living in Hong Kong and visiting them a number of times have caused me to become rather fond of Hong Kong. While I was born after they demolished the real life Kowloon Walled City, I've always been fascinated by life in this super-densely packed neighborhood. The background designs look great and detailed, such as Reiko's rustic apartment, Kai Tak Airport's iconic low final approach, the various shops on the streets and the food stalls. And the food themselves too. I don't think I have the right to say this as I'm not from Hong Kong, but they capture Hong Kong's atmosphere quite well. Everything looks like your normal 80s-90s Hong Kong, except for that diamond in the sky that loosely resembles Ramiel.

Reiko's character design is hot, and man, I wish my near-sightedness can magically heal like hers. I didn't know someone eating watermelon can be so attractive too. There is an interesting nod to Haruka Shiraishi, Reiko's VA in this episode, where a painting of her official picture (the one used on her agency and MAL profiles) is displayed on the TV store's storefront as Reiko walks past.

Hajime is an extroverted character, a good counterpoint to Reiko's more muted personality. It seems like he has a past with Reiko, or at least some version of her. Tomokazu Sugita voices him, but he sounds quite different from most of his characters.

Wednesday Campanella's OP and mekakushe's ED themes are both bangers that I will most likely still listen to even after the anime ends.

The realization that the waiter's "girlfriend" remark was neither teasing nor an assumption hits hard, especially for a first episode reveal.

Also, what's Ramiel doing chilling over Kowloon?

Wasn't expecting such a bop opening for this, but it works.

I have been looking forward to this so much. Adult romances are rare, especially with such a unique setting and mysterious vibe. And Kujirai is fyne shit.

Too bad we're getting a rushed adaptation ummmm, gotta try to enjoy the anime as much possible anyway.

@FMmatron Same here, my most anticipated show this season! I bought the first volume just after watching the first episode and while it seems like it'll be a rushed adaptation indeed, they're staying true to the story and consistent with translating the glorious art from the manga to good visuals. It's sad that they seem to be blatantly skipping chapters but hey, it worked for Horimiya imo so who knows.

This makes me want to watch KoiAme again...

@FMmatron Oh yeah, true. Luckily for me, I was anime-only there too so reading the manga afterwards ended up becoming one of my fav experiences. Maybe I should aim for the same here, lol.

Ok, not bad episode.

Since this season already looks like one of the most driest season. I was hoping atleast this one to keep me entertain but the news about complete adaptation of on going manga is depressing to hear.

Yeah, it's been over 4 years since I've read the first chapter, so far so good. If they opted for cutting some fat of the later chapters it may work. Then again I'm still traumatized from ReLIFE another one of my favorite adult romances xD

Phenomenal premiere! I read like 10 chapters of the manga right after and it’s honestly really intriguing. There’s this mysterious vibe around the whole thing — like you keep asking yourself “what’s actually going on with the MC?” and “why is she having these memory flashes?”

That ending totally reminded me of Gakkou Gurashi, where the main girl is schizophrenic and thinks she’s in a safe, normal place, but in reality, her world is completely destroyed. That last scene with the waiter, when it revealed the old, wrecked environment, felt super similar.

Of course I’m gonna keep watching! And shoutout to Kujirai — what a gorgeous waifu, especially with glasses. That just adds even more charm!

Came into this totally blind after people were hyping it up when it got announced and I loved the first episode. Despite the title, it’s anything but generic. Slowly builds up to the twist at the end and I can’t wait to see where this goes. It’s a lot more to this story than a simple office romance. Love a good sci-fi mystery.

OP BANGS. Might be best of the season so far? We’ve had quite a few bangers so it’s probably time I start playing AMQ again to flex lol. Reiko’s design is so good too omg the after the rain author does NOT miss with character designs. What a woman.

So right from the start the show kinda beat us over the head with the goldfish symbolism. Goldfish are used as a symbol of bad or short term memory. Not uncommon for office workers to flirt and be close, but Kudo just gave off this vibe of he and Reiko being way closer than they are. I knew something had to be off. The way he looks at her, messes with her, they’re cute as hell but it’s like there’s a history behind his actions.

That reveal at the end!! So clearly something happened to make Reiko lose all her memories. I wonder if it’s related to that Terra earth machine or what. It floating over Kowloon just gives Dead dead demons destruction vibes, like there’s this impending sense of doom. Surely that pharmaceutical company involved too.

THAT KISS AT THE END??! Wasn’t nothing accidental about that, my guy went back for the double lock at the end lol 😂 really excited for this where this goes.

OP & ED are both BANGERS, one of the best this year and definitely added to my spotify playlist. Curious if with only 12 episodes and an original ending they can handle the story well and not seem messy.

I didn't read manga, but I heard they are rushing the adaptation, like 130 chapters in 13 episodes. Episode one felt pretty smooth to me. I like the mystery, and I didn't feel like something necessary was missing. Pretty good start, the vibes are nice, and I didn't expect sci-fi parts in a show like this. Looking forward to the next episodes.

@Gekko_ua I had already heard it was partly Sci Fi. It works great, because it's mostly background, just like today's tech was sci fi when I was a kid but is just background now. Too many series just cram it into your eyeballs to make you see "here, it's the future". Or as someone once told me, the REAL Starship Enterprise wouldn't need all those blinking lights, screens, & control panels. LOL

Ok, so let me get this straight.

We've a romance where the word generic comes from a device up in the sky whose objective is suspicious and not really clear. A woman with a lot of shots of her daily life having meetings with her coworker Kudo and falling in love with him after her arguments, and visiting the different sides of the backstreets. Kudo craves nostalgia sensation while Kujirai the new and exciting things and during a prank he ends up kissing her quite forcefully. Then he says it was the wrong person and she finds out a picture of herself without having a recollection of the moment and it briefly flashes to a ruined bar.

So in other words, is Kujirai living in a dream? Did she develop amnesia after a tragedy? Or am I thinking too hard into this? Whatever the case, I'm watching this.

I think I’ll like this series more the art and atmosphere than story. This was one of my anticipated anime for the season so I’ll stick around. Honestly though, was not a big fan of the guy he was less “mysterious” and more “man-child” to me. Hopefully his characterization improve, but beyond that it was a nice first episode vibes-wise.
