Surprisingly out of all shojo anime that I have consumed, none of them even have any sort of sexualisation of male characters. The shonen romance which includes the harem and ecchi genre always has fanservice like panty shots and other unnecessary focus on female characters' bodies to distract from the plot but there has not been any sexualization of male characters. Instead, it involves the beautification of male characters. Most of these shojo male love interests don't have well-defined abs, they just look tall, slender, skinny, and beautiful with some weird quirks |

Simply put, we men tend to be a bit more monkey brain when it comes to finding things hot. what girls like is just as if not even more weird at times, but it is less focused the straight up sexual scenes. That said, there are definitely a lot of shojou anime with male fanservice and sexy dudes with abs out there too. its just a bit less common in comparsion to shounen fanservice. |

Over all I doubt there will ever be much sexualization of male characters in actual shoujo Anime because that isn't something a majority of what actual consumers of Shoujo manga in Japan likely actually really want. If this is something you are looking for you would be better off searching for Hentai and Erotica that specifically tries to target female viewers. On a side note there is one Ecchi Anime that I have watched before that does offer Female viewers a pretty predominate focus on the male body which is pretty uncommon. It was "How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?". While this might seem like an outlier, I am sure there could be more but it's not like I actually actively search out Anime just to find franchises that exploit the bodies of fictional characters. |

From my very limited experience with straight Shoujo Romance (only 3 shows), they all had their male characters be super tall, have a deep voice, be mysterious and be considered to be very desirable in the work's universe. To top that off, they had to have abseloutly zero personality aside from "Mysterious, perfect prince". I'd say that's the fanservice equivalent. And also one of the reasons I tend to stay away from the genre, as it's much worse than the visual fanservice of Shonen. Sure, it's commonly used to distract from a bad plot, but this season's 100 Girlfriends is a perfect example of how the fanservice itself isn't a bad influence. It only is when used in inappropriate shows like Atelier Ryza. |

Well that's because if you're an east asian girl, chances are you're more into effeminate men than men with defined abs and body of a body builder. There are definitely some outliers but they're few and far between. Shoujo is catered to east asian girls first and foremost. Even shows that feature guys with toned abs, JJK for example, the male character who has the most female fans is... Surprise surprise, Gojo Satoru. It's well known. I'm still surprised it's a culture shock for some people. |

I noticed often girls like really specific things often like guys hands or their veininess (while others find that gross) or their height difference (though not always) or the way they look at a love interest or the way they hold them. Girls don't like abs as much as guys like abs. Plus this stuff is for girls in Japan which they have their own tastes. |

male and female audience have vastly different preferences. i remember reading a thread where (apparently) females of MAL explained what kind of fan-service they like to see. to summarize they said they don't want to see explicit scenes like men do. for them shirtless scenes, sleeves folded, kabedon's etc. is considered fan-service. tall guys in shoujo animes who have feminine features etc. is what women like to see. |

It's because these series are made more towards female preferences which focus way more on emotional relationships. Stuff for adult women does tend to have sexual content, but in general the emotional aspect is more what manga aimed towards a female demographic aim for rather than quick dirty sexual gratification. |
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place. |

yeah, well iguess women's preference tend to be more complicated in these stuffs. For most men, just show a pair of boobs or zettai ryouiki, and they're sold, no matter where they live but then, what eastern women like as fan service also differ from what western women do, at least based on my experience living with both types, so complicated men (me) are easy to profit off |

@logopolis That's because I don't add Anime to my list unless I have actually finish watching them to completion as well as Shoujo Anime isn't something I actively sought out specifically because it's Shoujo. There are countless Anime titles I have consumed over the years since I was in middle school in the late 80s to the turn of the century where sometimes I simply didn't have all episodes available to watch because I couldn't catch them airing on TV every day or not everything was available at the time to watch on VHS in the West. Sometimes when I was watching something I didn't even realize at the time I was actually watching a Shoujo Anime. As examples "Sailor Moon" Aired an un-westernized version of a few episodes on a local UHF station in the early to mid 90s during the time before it even aired on Cartoon Network where I was able to watch those few episodes. One of the very 1st scenes that caught my eye was getting an eye full upskirt panty shot of the protagonist during an action scene from what I remembered. Every time she transformed into her skimpy sailor outfit costume she would 1st go completely naked too. Last time I checked "Sailor Moon" was a Shoujo. There is also "Magic Knight Rayearth" and even "Nana" where there is multiple scenes of female characters half naked or either scenes showing off their panties briefly. Over all there are plently of examples where female characters are being sexually exploited in Anime even in Shoujo. Hell the entire premise of "Peach Girl" is about the colour of the girls body where they often have scenes unnecessarily focused specifically on parts of the protagonist's body in sort of a "male gaze" perspective at times. There is even "Cutey Honey F" which oddly is a Shoujo. I don't think I need to even explain myself with that title. I could go on but I think you get my drift. |

Their transformations equip them for engaging in action sequences without embarrassment. Every time she transformed into her skimpy sailor outfit costume she would 1st go completely naked too. Not sexualised nudity though. A naked female body might be interesting for male viewers, for for girls, it's something they already have one of. And see plenty more of every time they go to a public bath. Additionally, nakedness is symbolic of purity in Japanese culture. Moon spends a lot of the final episode naked, it is definitely not for fanservice. I can't speak for the others because I haven't seen them, or at least it was a very long time ago. But i can observe that: There is even "Cutey Honey F" which oddly is a Shoujo. I don't think I need to even explain myself with that title. That's got an interesting history. The original Cutey Honey was intended at conception to be a traditional magic girl show. But it ended up in a shounen TV slot by mistake, so it was retooled to have lots of action and fanservice to appeal to the boys. But since it was putting on-screen a type of action heroine which was otherwise absent, it got a healthy girl audience too. You can't judge this sort of thing in a simplistic way. The female body and any sort of regular female clothing is unremarkable to a female audience, and even if sexy, it may be aspirational. It may be addressing issues of concern or insecurity to its audience. Figuring out what's going on requires careful reading of a scene. For instance, "male gaze" is not really about how much flesh is shown or anything, it's primarily about disinterest in the overall facial expressions of female characters. |

Ya, at the time I was still a young horny teen, it was definitely something that caught my eye at the time specifically because it was on a Local UHF channel. I think the reason why they stopped airing "Sailor Moon" on that specific local UHF station was due to the nature of the characters being thought to being shown briefly nude during their transformations (something like this was completely unprecedented at the time when dealing with animation airing on western air waves). When "Sailor Moon" aired on Cartoon network a few years later, the Anime was heavily edited for Western consumption, even eliminating the whole lesbian thing going on between Uranus and Neptune. I think at this point, while I never completely caught every episode that aired was when I actually stopped watching it all together due to my real life schedule. The point is made though that I have attested that clearly most of the Shoujo Anime that I have consumed in the past still contains a lot of panty shots and unnecessary focus of the body of female characters regardless of the target demographic, sexualized or not. This is not something that would be normally offered in any Western Animation targeting a young female demographic. |

Lady Géorgie has some of those scenes where male characters are naked and one even attempts suicide in the shower. But 70s series did not allow for much body detail
One reason is that many shojo manga were influenced by Swedish actor Björn Andersen who gained world fame in the 70s via the movie Death in Venice. He also visited Japan where he was ultra - popular. He became the western blond male character archetype for shojo and other manga for decades in Japan, his impact even felt today.

@Lucifrost it shows him fully body naked and he tried suicide because he was abused by the male owner of the estate. It has some sort of pretty body fetishism because previously Georgie is shown naked with another pretty character too who was his rival. Those scenes were edited out in the dubs btw |

what girls like is just as if not even more weird at times, but it is less focused the straight up sexual scenes.
That said, there are definitely a lot of shojou anime with male fanservice and sexy dudes with abs out there too. its just a bit less common in comparsion to shounen fanservice.

@APolygons2 Naah, have you seen the fanarts and fanfiction and in general josei smut that are mostly created by women and female assigned people? (not saying this to complain btw) The thing is that shoujo is written for young girls that's why most of it is so tame and ofc there bishounen, but these series are too shy to go further, but most humans are similiar monkey brained. |

@Risa92 I mean yeah obviously. I'm not saying that doesn't exist or that it isn't common. What I am saying is, even the most erotic messed fan fics made by woman, tend to have a bit more focus on making "romantic" and creating a hot personality. Compared to half the ecchi shows we men watch, where the extent of the fanservice is just "TITS" Like, a hot guy accidently flipping his dick out, wouldn't exactly become a common trope. That's what I meant by "monkey brain" |

@APolygons2 Hm yes, you are not wrong. Lot of porn / smut / hentai I've seen or read that were made by men focused a lot on genitals, breasts and the act itself, and that made by women weren't any less uhm smutty, but focused more on the couple and the two people as whole. *cough* lot of them were more classy so to say. */cough* |

@Risa92 Yea, josei smut is pretty good, it's nice that it's more real couple like, instead of that exaggerated over produced garbage. Also the boobs are all wrong, never mind that the male protagonist is a total loser usually, the worst a female protagonist can be is slightly broke. Do people actually like loser protagonists, or is that some gender bias thing that women can't be shown being too lame? |

Even if it's something simple and not perverted, it's still fanservice. |

Banana Fish literally has so much shoujo fanservice, that it even has a Shoujo tag.
@Piromysl I just got reminded of the candy bar song lmao Does this count as fan service? 🤔 |

I think most of that is in manga, that or rape fantasies. |
