Why do most people choose dogs?

Are you that person who feels more solidarity with the dog?

Or are you a third person who doesn't save either the dog or the person you watch them both die

I would save the person and then plead with them to adopt atleast 2 dogs.

It's one of those things that people have more possibility for good but also more possibility for bad while the dog is the "safe" choice since dogs are more often than not good. Obviously this is an in a bubble question and we have no morality or dysfunction associated with either party so I am giving an answer in broad strokes.

Probably the person if I had time to choose but I wouldn't largely imagine I'd be taking the time to think should I be in such a situation. Although I'd probably be a bit more decisive about saving a cat before either of them.

As much as I love animals, I'd probably try to save the person in most cases. I also wouldn't like for anyone to blame someone death on me.

saving a PERSON over a heckin mlemmin doggin borkerino? take my downvote...

Why do most people choose dogs?

Midwits care deeply about appearing smart to others.

Out-group preference (for example, preferring other species over humans) is a signifier of "intelligence." (Why this is the case is complicated, but it's self-evident that that message is constantly reinforced in media/pop culture. If you watch a movie about aliens, all the poor uneducated "redneck" characters will distrust the aliens, and the "intelligent," virtuous characters will try to find common ground with the aliens. If you watch a monster movie or zombie movie, 9 times out of 10 the moral of the script is "mankind was his OWN worst enemy all along....")

Midwits pick up on that "intelligence" signifier and emulate it.

I'd feel sorry for both, but if I were in a situation in which I'd have to choose between saving a random person and a random dog, I would definitely save the former. Without any hesitation.

Everyone who's not saving the human is just a douchy sociopath xD

The dog might love you, even tho nobody else does. That's okay. Love the crap out of this dog. But that doesn't mean a human life is worth less than that of an animal. Period.

I find these kind of questions pointless since in the moment you will not really necessarily be rationally making a decision you will just do whatever is easier or grabs your most attention in the moment. Sometimes you will save the dog, sometimes the person, sometimes do nothing.

The dog, likely. My interactions with humans have been much less endearing than my interactions with animals, so I'd pick who I sympathise with more.

I should ask about the idea of saving your dog or a person in this scenario. In this case, many would say I will save my dog

For some people, a dog is more worthy than a human. They sympathize much more with an animal of another breed than with their similar

Person obviously, like any healthy individual should. Human life is way more important than an animal's.

Person. I somehow feel like people who say dog are just trying to sound edgy, kind of like "humanity bad hurr durr".

I never own a pet, but I vibe very well with cats. So, I would rather save a person than a dog in this situation.

@Taiyaa Even in that scenario probably the person, although it would be much harder to not save my dog. This question reminds me of the choice you have to make in Life is Strange. Spoilers for the game mentioned below.

Neither, what if the person would go on to become Hitler 2? And what if the dog would eat a toddler? In fact I'll join them and die too, what if I go on to become the next Hitler?!! You never know...

@WaffleMaster89 responding quickly without much context; I save people. I deal well with the loss of people close to me. It would be understandable if my friend saves people and not me as well.

If it's my own dog, then I'm saving him first. Animal or no, he's part of my family and as harsh as it sounds I care more about him than a human I don't know.
In general it's a pretty interesting thought experiment though.
Looking at it through a greater lens, then the human would also have family and people that care about them. Objectively speaking the human should outweigh my dog pretty much at all times.
Yet myself and a lot of people would rather make the selfish decision and save the thing they have a personal connection to.
If it's just a random dog however, I'd save the person first.

Man that´s a a hard question. Im not a dog person what so ever nor am I fan im people either "especially not today seeing how people are" But if it´s a life or death situation well I have to go with a human. I may have no respect for humanity today but im not evil and just let a human just die.

I'm actually surprised by the answers here, I was expecting people to go all edgy and say something like "The dog is my family while the other is not".
Me? The person. Like any sane "person" would.

It's not a question of humans or dogs. It's a question of who the individual human person or dog is to me, if there is any relation at all, before deciding.

Whether I save the person, whether I save the dog, or whether I would save neither and none at all is not dependent on species. It's entirely about any individual relationship on my part with that other organism, if any exists, or what they represent to me. I don't really care about a random human I don't know anymore than a random dog I don't know.

I would only care in the first place if they were entities I knew and even then, deciding would be based on hierarchy of importance in terms of relation to me and nothing to do with species.

And that's just covering two examples of mammals, but you can basically apply the same formula with any other lifeforms, like choosing between a human, dog, and non-pathogenic bacterial species (the pathogenic bacteria I'd prefer to perish though for obvious reasons of greater likelihood of minimizing the risk of danger created from it boomeranging back to me if released back into the wild).

I would only give the effort to save a (non-family) human if it were a little girl. Yes, I'm serious. And I wouldn't actively save an animal if it isn't my pet. And if forced to choose between a little girl and my hypothetical pet, I mean come on I'm saving the little girl.

I would probably pick a homeless person to save over my own dog. That's if I owned a dog.

But then again, I think pet people are sick. Like if it's just a possession issue, then admit it, you wouldn't save anyone, would you? If there was an accident you'd be rummaging through your glove compartment for your loose change, cause what's other people to you?
