The 2001 series made it a point to show that Tohru had not even begun to cope with her mother's death in any meaningful way--instead pretending that she was still around out there, waiting to help her out if she ever found herself in real trouble. Those final episodes finally unleashed such a situation, and when Tohru sought guidance from her mom, there was none to be found. It was paying off that long-established setup, that her mom is gone and that she can only find guidance from her friends and from herself. I had actually forgotten that the graveyard scene was exclusive to the 2001 anime, so I was disappointed in how quick and easy and painless the resolution in 2019 was. |
