Pretty much any Shaft show. Specifically Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Bakemonogatari. Very dialogue heavy shows that I adore, but turns a lot of people off. I showed a friend of mine the SZS OP a few years ago. He was so weirded out that he stopped talking to me. Hehehe.
A psychic dwarf escapes from a prison. It was a small medium at large.

To LOVE-Ru Darkness. It's one of my "guilty pleasure" shows that I can't recommend to someone unless he is as trashy as me.

Harukana Receive is a really superb anime with outstanding characters and the elegance of beach volleyball.
It's so hard to recommend that anime because most people will just find it as a fanservice show with bikinis.

Definetly the Monogatari series! Shaft just did too well adapting the "uniqueness" of the novels, that the anime is something hard to understand/get into. The story of stories... or rather the character developments and introspections it provides, along with the great visual style, superb openings (and endings) and the soundtracks, it's just really unique.

Well there's also Kill la Kill. I expected it to be some weird "ecchi" stuff going into it, but how wrong I was. It's one (if not the) most hilarious shows I've ever seen, with great characters, really awesome soundtrack and one of the best Studio Trigger visual styles of the their productions. Still, getting into the show can be quite hard, especially with how it starts out.

Lastly, maybe I'd also say that on the note of Studio Trigger, it'd be sometimes difficult to get others into BNA. The show itself has some problems, mainly pacing I'd say, but I had some friends reject the recommendation, just assuming it was some furry show... :/
Don't mind me,

Any of the anime that I rate between 8-10 would be recommendable. The only one that I would be a little unsure about recommending is Absolute Duo. Going by the rating of the anime on MAL and the opinions of people in the episode discussion threads, it's a show with mixed reviews. I personally liked it because of the charm of the characters and the story itself. But I don't know if anyone I'd recommend it to would like it.

Anything sexual that isn’t vanilla. Anything I’m recommending that is implied and not explicit.

This is troublesome trying to recommend to people who would like more be out like given and Yuri on ice, but are not willing to take implied relationships. especially because they think what I’ve given them is just a ship. When really, I’m giving them something more like Kaworu and Shinji or Madoka and Homura.

Also, the rigidity makes it really difficult for me to praise darker content. Tho I will definitely continue doing so.

- Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice & Wolf)
its first episode has a very soft nude scene and many watchers mistake it for fanservice

- Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
the same reasons of Spice & Wolf apply to this anime as well

- Steins gate
its initially slow pace puts off many watchers

- NHK ni Youkoso! (Welcome to the N.H.K.)
not everyone can empathize with shut-ins

- Madoka Magica
"if school girls are the protagonists then the show is aimed for children"...
however this is not the case at all, and it's pretty much impossible to for non anime watchers to understand
the unique artstyle doesn't help either, many people are put-off by it
the prejudice is strong on this one

- Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus' Bride)
telling a friend this series is about a little girl who gets buyed by a big-daddy-bone-magician at the slave market is often enough to put off non anime watchers

- Happy Sugar Life
this is not in my top anime (gave it a 6 or so), however it is the best example of a "nearly impossible anime to recommend to someone else"
only long time anime fans will have the balls to try this series out, just look for a synopsis online and you'll know why

- Kubikiri Cycle, one of my favourite animes!
It revolves around a death in a deserted island where some of the most intelligent people around the world gathered. The show appeals to a specific audience, the characters are too extraordinary to even relate, and many topics require previous knowledge as well as a well-crafted opinion to even understand.

Texhnolyze. Wish it was not that slow, not that draining and not that unpleasing to watch, though it was not a problem for me, it makes it hard to justify recommending it.

I love Banana Fish with all of my heart, but I usually need to see what the other person's taste is if I try recommending it. Because of that it kind of makes it hard to recommend :') I guess it's because I don't want them to hate it.

Uta no Prince Sama, all the way. I love the series, it's very sparkly and has pretty anime boys that sing, but whenever I go to show it to other people they think it's really bad and too much. I get where they're coming from, but it still hurts, so I end up not bringing it up out of fear.

Rent a girlfriend has been hard for me to recommend to friends. The name "rent a girlfriend" is just such an absurd concept, its understandable why one might not watch it based off the name. But it really is a great anime.

Recently put food wars in my favorites because what the heck I enjoyed the crap out of it. But really ecchi mixed in with gourmet food is not going to go well with a lot of people. For many, like myself, it's one two punch combo and it's awesome. But not everyone's gonna want to hear people freaking moaning while eating some food-porn level food. Wait, that's what it is basically, food porn!

Gekkan shojo Nozaki-kun. Imagine explaining how it's a shojo parody where the gender roles are swapped. We have a reverse trap that behaves like a man but identifies as a girl, a guy that writes shojo manga but can't understand girls and a beach episode where the guys get embarrassed. Whenever I try to explain how awesome this anime is, my otaku friends just stare at me and wonder 'what the shit'

I don't watch as much anime as I used to but I had some love for slow paced and/or weird anime

Madlax is VEEEERY slow, almost nothing happens and could have been shortened so one court but it has a similar vibe to crime/mystery series you'd see on TV

Aku No Hana is ugly and very slow too, I admit it, but that's its beauty in my opinion. I actually love this anime for all the reasons people hate it

Casshern Sins has this pace issue too but such beautiful visuals and animation, one of my favorite anime when it comes to visuals

.hack//Sign is the polar opposite of SAO, in terms of production, but has the same "like it or hate it" kind of reputation

Brigadoon on the other hand is fast paced, a lot is going on (maybe too much, you'd wonder what this shows wants to be) and has maaaany typical 2000s anime elements, if you don't like the first episode then it's not for you at all

The Monogatari series, while popular and generally loved, is clearly not for everyone with the emphasis on dialogs and visual liberties

That's all I can think of for now

It is really hard to recommend berserk. Both for the content of the story itself and for the lack of a good adaptation.

The classic 1997 Berserk anime is good but it only covers the Golden Age. And I know that a lot of newer anime fans struggle to watch something so old. On the other hand, the movies look great but, they cut a lot of what I liked and again they only cover the Golden Age arc. Lastly, the 2016-17 anime is basically unwatchable: they cut a lot of content and the animation is shoddy in the best of places.

I would say Punch line. First of all it's not that well known anime. I enjoyed it for it's stupid and hilarious plot. Many people will find it stupid and lame but that's what this anime is about...
Monogatari series also. First of all many people will find it very confusing because of its complex characters.
And the art style is not for everyone...

Generally any Slice of Life is pretty hard for people who don't usually watch Anime, cause they kinda feel *nothing's happening* or don't really care as much for the *just* fictional Life of imaginary characters on screen.

>>Hajime no Ippo<< is the one I tried and failed recommending the most.
1) A Sports Anime --- which turns a lot of people off already
2) It's Animation is dated for todays standarts
3) It got a lot of these Slice of Life sections as well

In terms of scoring, it'll be Wolf Children & Maquia. They are movies, yes, but types of movies that might not translate to enjoyment, and instead it'll be boredom.

In terms of my personal enjoyment, it'll be hard to push Houkago Teibou Nisshi. It's a warm yet straightforward show that my friends might not pay attention halfway through.

I was thinking about this and Yuru Yuri: Happy Go Lily came to mind. It's a show about a bunch of younger girls sitting round chatting, flirting with each other and in general being silly.

It doesn't sound very promising and after reading the synopsis I didn't pay it much attention, until, someone recommended it highly to me. I watched S1 and was hooked, it's very funny and I'm currently on S2.

For people who haven't seen it, if you like cgdct shows then give this one a go. If you don't like cgdct then don't watch it.

SAO only because of the assault scenes. They are pretty hard to watch. >_>

Made in Abyss also makes too many jokes about Reg's...boy parts. xD it's such a good series...but...BUT...I can't tell sensitive people to 'go watch this'.

....actually, sensitive people wouldn't be able to get through the violence either....come to think of it.

Monster. Most people just aren't interested in such a down-to-earth and bitterly real show when it belongs to a medium that primarily consists of massive robots, gory action and big melons. Also the slightly daunting episode count.

That said; If you're reading this, please give Monster a go! It is a wonderful story with a great antagonist.

Clannad. I have stopped recommending because people are not patient enough to watch it fully. Its hard to convince them. Either they stop mid-way through S1 or drop it after S1.
Madoka Magica. Reasons ? Girls doing girly things. We good bro, you only watch it.
YLIA. Who cares about a musical anime dude. Go get a life.
and other animes (anohana, plastic memories, Angel Beats etc)

The above makes sense cuz the people whom I recommend are into Shonen genre, or those who have only watched Naruto and Dragon Ball (No offense to these fanbase tho) and talk about the same thing everyday.
Maybe they are good. Maybe I do not have the time to watch them.
