Variables are a bit unfair. You have things like a single movie or ova counting as 1 while shows with hundreds of episodes only counting as 1 as well. So it'd be better counting your time than your count completed.

Nah I really dropped my pace , I used to watch 15ep in a day , now barely 3-5 , so I really doubt , the only way I can achieve that is by never stopping watching anime in my life , I already took a break from anime a few times so I don't see it like a lifetime hobby

I think I've got a good chance. I probably complete at least 50 anime a year, I'm still interested in anime, I'm young, and I have decent health. I'll probably complete at least 2 thousand before I die,

I could do it within the next year if I decided to cheat and only watch shorts like music videos...
But since I'm planning to finish most of my dropped, on-hold, and watching, that would be around 900. However, maybe three years will pass before that point. So, I'll probably have taken up new seasonals, maybe even enough so that I'm at 1000. Therefore I'm guessing 4 years, something like that?

It took me 13 years to finish an estimate of 300, and that's already including movies. But regardless, I think I can do it given my current situation (laid off due to pandemic). It's not something I aim to do though. What I am targeting is to actually increase my number of favorite anime series, because so far I only have 2 out of probably 200+ anime series I have watched.

It's not real hard, especially if you watch a fair bit of short, experiemental, DIY,anime or music videos, etc on YT- most are >5minutes, and many are just a few seconds. If you really wanted to (for some deeply-autistic reason...), you could speedrun a 1k MAL list inside a week, doing that, with a little planning. Shit, you could probably do it with only 48 hours and a little amphetamines, if you tried.

But I'm pretty sure I'd still have >1,000, even if you only count major release "real anime"- Took about 2 years, watching a lot of "movies" (which may be as short as 20 minutes, or less), and OVAs from the 80s, 90s and 00s, with are often only 2-6 episodes. (RIP KissAnime)

It's probably even easier, if you're into more recent, seasonal stuff, where NOTHING is longer than 2 cours, and one-cour shows are the norm.

then again, I have no life, so...

This does include sequels, sidequels, music vids, etc.

Probably not because I don’t add OVAs and specials to my list so I’m missing a lot that could be on there. Also, I’m watching anime at an okay pace right now, but I don’t know if it will stay like this forever, I might start slowing down on how much I watch.

Already did actually. I've been an anime fan for 23 years now, and broke 1,000 somewhere in 2007 I'd estimate.

I've since doubled that milestone.

I hit 1000 years ago and honestly it wasn't anything special. It was just another spot in the road.

If you're meaning 1000 non-short TV anime I've already seen 555 of those so watching another 450 or so in my lifetime seems very plausible (and I'll probably have 5k completed anime in total by then). My list seems to just naturally increase as time goes on so having it hit 1000 anime eventually just seems like an inevitability as long as I watch for long enough.

There is a group of people who already did that and they formed a club, or was it 3000? I don't remember.

I watched 1000, I watched a lot between 2015 and 2016 and I reached 350, with the bad part being that I didn't care about my studies at all and I was kinda depressed at the time, this was when I watched my biggest amount of unworthy trash so I regret that greatly.

Then I doubled that amount in 2017 watching lots of ovas and movies but it was a great year for me when it comes to my studies so no regrets here.

In 2018, I didn't watch nearly as much during the years but completed a lot during vacations.

In 2019 I barely watched anime, I cared more about movies in these two years.

Somehow I reached 1000 completed anime (taking account different entries in a same franchise) and didn't notice.

Sounds like it was a lot but what people don't realize is that, for some years ago, there are around 200 (or more) anime released in each year, so if you keep track of seasonals you reach a big amount in just one year.

My perspective in the medium? I never thought too much about that. Guess I went from thinking it is the greatest thing ever from thinking it's complete shit and then I reached the point where I'm like yeah, whatever, there's good stuff and bad stuff just like in any other medium.

1000+ entry guy here. I have a lot to say so I'll try to keep it short.
it took me 10 years to get here.
I can finish 200+ anime per year (I've tested it. this includes shorts, ovas and movies btw)
the mal challenge is a very good way to motivate yourself and to broaden your taste.
I wouldn't have come this far just by casually watching anime, like turning on the tv.
I have goals in mind. stuff like: I want to finish this series today. I want to watch all the extra stuff related to this series. I want to complete the anime challenge. I want to complete 200 anime this year.
currently it's: I want to finish everything I've downloaded. then to watch every anime by gainax. then by satoshi kon. (almost done with this one unfortunately)
my greatest goal of all is to find something better than eva. that show was the one that turned me from a casual watcher into someone seriously interested in anime.
the more anime you watch the lower your average score will get, this is natural and you have to accept it. you're not becoming jaded, or started hating anime. you just have a better perspective and you're a better judge now.
you must learn to drop shows. watching things you're not interested in will set you back more than it's worth.
you have to step out of your comfort zone sooner or later. (mal challenge helped me a lot with this) you will be able to find shows you like in genres you dislike overall, trust me. if I sticked to my personal preferences: horror, psychological, gore, tits, postapocalypse, swordfights, cyberpunk, I'd be around 200 entries or so.
if you're stuck not knowing what to watch, try the reccs at the bottom of your favorite entries. I try to keep my plan to watch list around 100. but it just gets longer this way. if it doesn't help, look up the studio that made your favorites, favorite directors or the artists if you loved the art aspect.
every decade has it's dominant genres and you'll find a lot of clones and different takes on the same subject. the key to watching a lot of anime is to jump around in time, so it will feel less same-y.
even if it feels all bad sometimes, after every 50 entries I find a new gem I will treasure forever. it's a journey worth investing into. hold onto series that you know you will like, and watch those as a treat if you feel like you've only seen bad shows for a while.
don't buy into mal scores, the only thing they represent is how popular a show was. I find 7/10 shows to be way more satisfying than some higher rated ones.
it's not a race, take your time. you're here to have fun and enjoy yourself. if you can, read up on the creators and studios and the influences. it's not necessary at all but you might gain some insight and appreciate certain things more.

a note to myself if somehow my past version gets to read this some day: don't bother watching anything I've rated 5/10 or below. if a show is just okay, you can spend your time watching something else. I don't regret watching most but I know I could've spent my time with better things. and trust yourself, rebuild 3 is THAT bad.

If you just put enough dedication into it, I'm sure anyone could finish 1000 anime in a few years, perhaps even faster if it was your only hobby. That's counting in OVAs, ONAs and whatnot because of how MAL divides those individually.

Right now, I haven't even hit 100 but I plan on hitting 1000 by the time I get a driving license. I don't think completing a 1000 anime is about the 'odds' but more about whether you're actually willing to sink that many hours in a week. If you wanted to complete a thousand anime in about seven or eight years, you'd still need to watch maybe around 3-4 anime a week.

Yes, 1000 anime watched is quite easy. Being lazy is the only issue.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

I'm there already. The journey to 1k was definitely more interesting than the next 1k because I spent who know how much money to watch anime in internet cafes (didn't have internet at home at the time) and then with some crappy dial up speeds with crappy ISP.
Anyway, if reaching 1k changed my view of anime at all it has to be to realize that there's something good everywhere be it a short or a long running series or a modern show or an older series, in a genre you really like or in a genre you'd never thought you could enjoy...

Depends on what you mean by "1000." If you count OVAs, sequels, movies, shorts, etc., it's really easy to pad out your list (like mine). If you mean 1000+ series of 12+ full length episodes, I still think it's very doable - I don't think the problem is time, but how most people's interest in anime wanes over time and they drop off.

Reached 1000 years ago. It's a decent goal. Most anime fans lose interest before that point. I wouldn't say it's due to a lack of passion, but more investment in the medium. The average anime fan doesn't care about the history of anime or its inner workings. The ones who do and those who view anime more than entertainment will reach that point with time.

My current goal for a while now has been to watch every anime up to the year 2000.
