There was a huge surge of mecha anime for a while, right now we're getting like 8 new isekai every season. What genre do you think is going to get more popular in the next few years?

I don't really care, as long some of my favorite manga get an anime adaptation i'm fine with anything.

hentai. Pretty soon all the big studios will move towards more explicit forms of love. Once KyoAni finally comes back from all the damage, guarantee their return anime will be a hentai

seriously though, probably police/detective. Like we already have ~5 shows this season alone

I was about to say isekai, but then I remembered that isekai is not a genre, but a subgenre of fantasy. Maybe it'll become so popular that it'll be considered as a genre and not a subgenre. Maybe.

Isn't it already?

In fact, I'll go so far as to say that fantasy as a genre has been entirely taken over for the time being by the isekai "sub-genre".
"The problem with defining even an aspect of your personality by something that you like, is that criticism of that product appears to you to be criticism of you personally. I find it to be a very harmful attitude, [...] you can't rationally discuss a product because you've started to define yourself by its very existence."

If you want to know, just check whether there is any new genre emerging in manga and light novel -- there is not really anything yet. So, expect isekai to stay for at least another 5-10 years maybe.

I'd expect that isekai is bound to stay for a while probably branching out some more in some of its niches like otome isekai or slice of life isekai.

After that though it's pretty hard to predict. Maybe with the growing interest in the chinese and korean webtoons we get fresh titles colored by their flavor of fantasy.

A new isekai is still going on in manga, along with 'zombie' type of anime that appeared one or two in every seasons. This gonna last for more years I think. I hope we have more cyberpunk anime tho.

I'm not sure. However, I think we can assume that the next big genre will be even more self-indulgent and escapist than isekai, which will be really hard to achieve.

Idol shows are pretty popular when they do show up and have been in the background of the isekai genre's popularity, so eventually, Idol shows may overtake its place as the most overused genre.

I think CGDCT is probably going to come back in full force once people get burned out from isekai. Or they might not. Who knows?

Or you could mix the two to have porn police shows.

Mecha and Isekai will join forces. Gundam 1330: These mechs will get medieval on yo' ass.

...So basically Escaflowne now that I think about it.

I got nothing.

I believe that "Given-style" BL Anime will continue to grow, and hopefully drive harem and isekai away.

Maybe a shift from high school to a workplace environment? Like Steins;Gate or even that crappy new one Africa no Salaryman or whatever. Let's get some proper adult anime that is smart and funny and emotional like Bojack Horseman. Enough with the kiddie stuff and the fanservice. At this point I wouldn't even mind a reality tv style harem ecchi anime something liek The Bachelor or Love Island. Just make it thrilling and let it have a good challenges, twists and turns and surprises to keep everyone guessing and on their toes.

Yeah something like that should be the next big thing. Something different. Something new ffs.

I hope to see a day, when an anime's genre is interspersed of harem, ecchi, scoop of yuri, space, and adventure, which I thought of To Love-Ru being an intergalactic space opera, imagine Mass Effect, but anime. The sub-genre will be called "Haramu Spaisu".

Check Tenchi Muyo and more exactly Tenchi Muyou! GXP (which is surprisingly not about Tenchi but about his cousin Seina) for that.

I was getting around that, since that is the thing my friend recommended me years ago, sadly when my harem crusade came to a halt not so long after that. Will do, it's the only big harem series that I haven't checked out in anime form.

Usually new big trends are set off by catalysts that other people try to imitate. SAO isn't an isekai but you can see the logic of it influencing modern isekai. You have Gundam setting off real robot shows, Dragon Ball adding a bunch of tropes to shonen super action series, K-On becoming a template for CGDCT, etc.

So the question ought to be, are there any existing shows that might become subject to imitation? I say MHA. The next trend could be a super hero trend with distinctly DC/Marvel-esque inspirations.

If you are aiming at the whole franchise - there are a lot of parallel universe titles in it. Some of them are subpar, some of them are not harem but surprisingly mahou shoujo: Pretty Sammy and Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club (which are both about Sasami but in drastically different universes than the original one).

So I would recommend the Tenchi Muyou! Ryououki OVAs and the Tenchi Muyou! GXP TV which are in a same universe and even have crossover scenes.

I think wilderness survival is a genre that has potential (like "Mujin Wakusei Survive") , since a lot of anime has had more of a "last man standing" focus in the survival genre, and with "Dr Stone" having quite a bit of success so far, others may follow it .

aso I think Non combat shounens like "Shokugeki no soma" might start to appear more and more, with realistic themes like specific crafts or jobs (other than music and sports which are fairly common).

Japan will eventually have to make the neo-noir and thriller genres as marketable as in the west the more they run out of ideas.

Meanwhile, Gamefreak is running out of ideas for new Pokemon games and J-dramas are dead. Therefore, entertainment is getting less critically acclaimed in Japan everyday. First time you watched some generic battle shounen, last time you watched it.

Furthermore, Japan is too confident about what anime to make next and their ideas that will receive so well from critics.

Light novel adaptations maybe? Isekai got it's boom from mostly light novel Isekai adaptations, we've already had light novel adaptations but with Isekai they've become far more known in the industry instead of that one medium people just know exists but have no experience with. Plus they make light novels money since they're the most guilty of making anime just as advertisement, moreso than manga at the very least.

Or maybe highschool rom coms take their place at the top back again since apparently even when Isekai became a thing they still heavily took inspiration from harems. It's the actual trend that refuses to die, Isekai wasn't it's replacement, it was it's offspring.

I think (and hope) that parodies of popular genres will become big because I think they're really well received when done right like in One punch man, Konosuba and even Zombieland saga.
I really like them so I hope they become a big thing
