I've noticed that a lot of people on here have different definitions of what they consider old; I even saw someone saying they thought anime from the 2000s is old to them. I tend to call shows older or vintage if they're from the 50s to about '89 or '91. 90s anime is its own sort of thing and it doesn't feel as dated to me; basically anything produced digitally I can't think of as being old.

I'd say 80's or older. 90s just doesn't feel "old" to me, especially since a lot of them we didn't even get licensed until the 2000's, which is when I first started seriously watching anime.

I would say most people would consider anything pre-2000 as "old" anime at this point.

It's not too crazy to see 2000s anime as old, especially since we're heading into the 2020s soon... but for now it's not that old. I'd consider 2000s anime right now to be... I guess heading there lol
But "old" to me would be like 1980-2000. Past 1980 would be "really old"

IDK I don't usually think about when the anime airs as a factor to if I want to watch it, cuz I'm sure there's gems out there I haven't seen yet that existed before me. I mean, the older Ghibli movies still appeal to me despite their age

I can't consider a series younger than myself to be "old", so 1996 is as recent as I'm willing to go in calling something old.

I wouldn't say there is a strict definition but your perspective is based on when you started watching. As for me I started watching in the 80's so tend to see stuff from the 70's and 80's as old, then 90's and 00's stuff I tend to refer to as just older.

At this point I'm starting to think that anything over 15 years old should be considered old, just because mentally or psychologically speaking, for a grown up adult, that seems to be the timespan for which events stop being part of so-called "recent times" in the memory. Which means that shows of the early 00s should already start to be considered old.

In my opinion I tend to consider anime done before digital animation “old”, so anything before the 2000’s basically. But I love old anime and how cel animation looks.

I consider anything before the aspect ration change from 4:3 to 16:9 to be old, aka anything before the modern anime era of 2000s is an old anime in a technical sense...

But if you mean what I personally would consider "old", I would probably say anything from 80s or before Evangelion :)

Not trying to offend anyone on this thread but I believe anything before 2000s is old to me. In other words, if It doesn't have 1080p 720p or even 480p, it's old in my book :^)

What does that last bit mean? There are plenty of pre-2000s anime available in higher resolution.

i know this isn't really an answer to your question but imagine a couple years from now the shows that are going to be considered old. imagine "a silent voice" being viewed as an old classic.

i figure im probably going to be nostalgic for the 2010s, and that kinda hurts my head lol

The 80s (especially early 80s) and before. As a 90s kid, something from 1997 or 2001 seems as fresh to me as when it came out. Part of it may have to do with whether you were alive or close to it during this time (even if you didn't necessarily watch the show in question anywhere near the time it originally aired, until many years later) so you can envision the atmosphere and it doesn't seem distant and alien at all.

The most outlandish one I've heard so far, no small feat, was a 2013 anime being referred to as "old" in a semi-derisive kind of way. It was a mix of one of those "I know I'm commenting on an OLD anime" or "It's good even though it's OLD" type comments. Six years ago is "old" now. And beyond being dumb, it's used synonymously for "something bad", "poor quality", and "not worth your time".

A lot of it just comes down to age. I can see how 14 year-olds consider something from 2003 to be "old". And the 80s felt somehow removed and far away when I was living in the 90s.

It's like, if it came before someone was born, it's just from that dark vast void of pre-existence. It might as well be from the 9th century.

This. You can definitely tell when something is from the 90's and when something is more recent.

Plenty of old anime have HD remasters where they get the hand drawn pictures, rescan them in higher resolutions (no wonder, the physical image allows for higher resolutions than other fully digitally produced anime) and animate them again digitally (the original animation techniques have been discontinued and are too costly).

You're not offending anyone, you just didn't know about it and assumed, like many people do. After all most clips, eds or ops you'll find in youtube will be in low quality, mostly for being old downloads themselves.

It makes the most sense to me to draw the line around the year 2000 since there are some significant changes in how anime were produced before and after that. Both the move from cel animation to digitally assited animation, as well as the move from longer anime that aired during the day and generated revenue from TV quotas to shorter anime that air late at night and generate revenue via DVD/BD sales.

Drawing the line elsewhere just feels arbitrary since there is no real difference before and after. You can do it, but you should be aware that old and new become meaningless terms which don't signify any real difference.
I probably regret this post by now.

Similar to a few other posters, I consider anything that has finished airing 10 or more years ago as old. For example, I consider Hunter X Hunter as old while Hunter X Hunter 2011 as still recent. Ten years from now in 2029, I'll consider Demon Slayer (first season) or other shows that finished airing in 2019 as old.

Other definitions would feel dated as time goes on. Imagine being in 2040 or 2050 and still considering 2000s or 2010s as recent shows? That'd be odd.

Anything from the 1980s and older (e.g. Rose of Versailles, Kimba, Astroboy and Heidi) but I guess for some young grasshoppers here, even 2005 would be considered ancient. It is very subjective.

In the case of live action, old starts for me around the 1960s and before the ascend of New Hollywood (i.e. Scorsese, Copolla, Spielberg, Schlesinger, Bertolucci)

No, not really. It depends on what you're looking at. Style characteristics, changes in the way the story is told, etc. For example, in American comics, the modern era is fixed around the mid-1980s when "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller and "Watchmen" by Alan Moore were released. These comics were noticeably different from their predecessors. It may well be that there won't be that many truly noticeable changed in the next twenty years. We will see. As shown with comics, they didn't really change that much for quite some time.
