I just realized something while reading Hyulla's Race, in which I considered making the main female lead my waifu...
The whole idea of having a waifu is the epitome of absurdism.
For those of you who don't know, the philosophy of absurdism is essentially knowing that life has no meaning, but continuing to pursue meaning anyway, even when you know your efforts are futile; it's a contradiction, essentially.
What are waifus? Waifus are fictional 2D anime girls. We know they will never love us, yet we continue to cherish and love them anyway, despite knowing that no matter how much we love them, it is futile.
What do you guys think? Am I right?...Or am I right? ;)

@OfDeathandLove

What do you think of this?

Using that we can say liking a show that will never like us back yet we continue to enjoy these shows also is futile. Or enjoying conversations with people etc. This is a thought you could, in theory, apply to almost anything entertainment-wise.

Aaaand that's my cue that it's time to go to sleep, I have done too much internet for the night.

Not because the topic is ridiculous, but because I find myself agreeing.

I think I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. Because when we watch anime, we don't wish the anime to love us to begin with. But when we have waifus, we wish the waifu would love us back.

Depends on how you view waifu though right? I have one, but I don't want my waifu loving me back. She is just my favorite female lead in any show.

Ah, but can you truly apply absurdism and existentialism to everything? How does existentialism relate to waifus?

existentialism basically says existence is meaningless until you give it meaning so you give meaning to a none existent (or not real) waifu i guess lol

but you can make the case for everything that you deem nothing/worthless/meaningless/non-existent to you though like the things you do not prefer or things you hate

i guess you just realize the true meaning of absurdism in this case

No, just no. It's just a fun thing people do, it doesn't have to have a meaning behind it. Also, do you start all of your threads with some depression stuff? Like, damn.

Exactly! It doesn't have any meaning! I'm just saying that our love for waifus, our wish for them to love us, even though they won't love us, parallels absurdism!

You could say that everything we do in life is "futile" because we die in the end. I think the problem comes with the word "futile" being applied so broadly and possibly just being a vague, useless word to begin with.

Philosophy and applying terms and concepts in such abstract ways as to remove all meaning. Name a more iconic duo.

Everything we do in life is futile, depending on what your view of life is: if you're a nihilist like me, then yes, everything you do in life is futile. However, if you're an existentalist/essentialist, then it's not futile; there's purpose.
The concept of absurdism, is pursuing meaning, while knowing there is no meaning. Likewise, waifuology is pursuing love, while knowing there's no love.

Yeah I'm aware of the differences in the philosophies, I was mainly having a bit of fun mocking philosophy because it's so easy.

To properly address your OP, I think waifu culture can be any of the three (absurdist, existentialist, essentialist).

Depends on the person. Either way they are pursuing meaning. But it is that pursuit operating under the assumption that there is no meaning, or that the meaning comes from the individual, or the meaning comes from nature.

I lean more towards existentialism. I don't think the pursuit of meaning is from some kind of natural place outside of our own consciousness, but rather something that comes from consciousness, which we alone possess as extensions of the universe. So in a way I do see it as fundamental to the universe, but I see our consciousness as part of the universe, you follow? So there is no difference between existentialism and essentialism, for me. Essentialism just has this weird seperation between man and the universe, where we are but products or pawns of the unverse that act under it's will / laws. This is a horribly negative, misanthropic view and to hold it in my opinion says more about the person than anything else. It reeks of pre-enlightenment religious dogmatic thinking that makes slaves of individuals.

I can't get behind absurdism at all though. It's like, how do we define meaning? If I say "x is the meaning of my life", who is anyone else to say that I'm wrong and there is no meaning? Clearly people find meaning. We can debate where that meaning ultimately comes from, but there is meaning.

I live in a sweet spot of Nihilism and Absurdism (they are not independent).

I think life is absolutely meaningless and the fact that we have no choice but to work for a living until the point where we are no longer physically capable of doing things we once wished to do is a pretty depressing way of life if you ask me. People continue to deceive themselves by trying to attribute "meaning" to their life when at the end of the day none of actually gets us anywhere. Like every other creature we live and die, there's nothing more to it. We just like to believe that we are here on Earth for some great purpose...

HOWEVER

WAIFUS ARE NOT ABSURD BECAUSE ISSHIKI IROHA IS BEST GIRL

...

...

Yes Waifus are totally absurd.

It's less that we're telling you your personal life's meaning actually has no meaning, but it's the personal acceptance that whatever you put your life meaning into will, most likely, eventually fail you.

For example, you get into a long-term relationship or marriage, and during that time you might say your partner is your meaning in life, but there's about a 50% chance that "meaning" will fail you (i.e. you break up or divorce). Granted, divorce rates are dropping, so there's that.

It can apply to a lot of the little things in life, though. A great show ends badly. You get your dream job to find out huge parts of it suck. Your best friend does something to hurt you. You pour all your love into a waifu/husbando, but it turns out that they have no capacity to love you back.

It's the idea of Sisyphus; you'll roll a boulder to the top of the hill to have it roll back down almost unfailingly. You can roll it back up (find a way to put your life meaning back into whatever let you down) or you can pick up a different boulder (put your life meaning into something). At the end of the day, it's up to you what boulders you want to roll up, but Absurdism is accepting that they're most likely going to roll back down.

So these things give life a real meaning, albeit a temporary one. At least, that's my interpretation.

------------------------------------------------

Anyway, on waifus/husbandos and absurdism, I pretty much agree with the people that say it's pretty much the same as to how absurdism applies across the board. I mean, sure, I'd love Yukimura to come through the screen and love me, but I'm not as dedicated to that idea to pour much more meaning into it as I would the idea that one of my favorite shows get a new season.

If you're someone who's really dedicated to their waifu (the kind that would get body pillows of them and photoshop them into vacation pictures), then yeah, maybe there's something more there.

You can love something without that something lovin you in return, you may love your dead granma or your fav choco ice cream. In regards to waifus, I don't think it's really love, it's something like a possesion thing, you like that anime girl, it's your type. I don't think it's absurd.

For me they are an ideal. I know I will not reach it in reality, but that doesn't mean I can't have it in fantasy. As long as I don't mix the two it can increase enjoyment of life. In the end it's like having crush on celebrities and other things like that. It might be absurd behavior from purely rational perspective, but it's a human thing to do.

1. The OP should check what absurdism really means.
"Embracing the absurd condition of human existence" doesn't mean that you should act like an idiot, just accept the fact that people are weird and irrational.

2. Choosing a waifu is mainly self-ironic act of absurdist humour not a proof that you are deeply into this philosophy.

Nothing wrong with having waifu. When I was younger, I thought I will get over 2d waifu when I finally had sex with real life 3d women. I even have sex with two Japanese prostitutes when I went to Japan for business trip. And guess what, I still like 2d waifu. I have a girlfriend now, but that still doesn't stop me from loving my Demon Queen waifu and witch waifu.

You know you have sunken pretty low on the weeb scale when you start applying philosophical concepts to the existence of waifus.

Its not futile to love a fictional character even if it is one-sided, all those posters, figures, pillows etc. can bring happiness and warmth. How can something with a very tangible benefit be considered an absurdity?

I think it's futile, because we all, deep down, wish our waifus would love us, yet can't. I'm not trying to say that absurdism exactly applies to waifuology, I'm trying to say that they parallel each other.

@YossaRedMage

Despite how much we disagree, I think I'm going to agree with you on not understanding exactly what "meaning of life" means. To my understanding though, "meaning of life" means the point of life.

If anything, waifu culture parallels existentialism.

Much of existentialism teaches that individuals must find their own meaning in life, similarly, an otaku will add their own meaning and value to their 2D relationship. For example I consider my waifu more valuable than most human beings, that is the value I have placed on her but I can't expect others to do the same. Outsiders will look and see a collection of images & video files and will see little of value while in contrast the otaku will see a waifu as a much needed receptacle for their emotions, time and undoubtedly their money.

As it relates to connecting to fiction, and desiring things that exist in a fictional world, I don't see how that would be 'absurd' unless you think all interactions with fiction and fantasy to be absurd. There are so many different meanings of the word 'waifu' nowadays, but I think there it is a natural thing to have a single character that you feel very close to, and who you could maybe even fall in love with.

I think those people who buy cakes for their waifus on their birthdays and on Christmas to be kind of funny, and depending on the context a little sad. But if the ritual has meaning for them, I wouldn't call it absurd. At it its worst, it could turn into a delusion. But I have the feeling these people are more self-aware than they are given credit for.

I think that indeed sometimes we construct not really "real" things, even in our daily life.. Like "I'll marry this person and be together with him/her forever", even if statistics say that more than half marriages will end in divorce.. And these statements we construct could be called absurd.. Still, it's just that society tolerates more one absurd things over others.. But in the end, do you really need society to agree, for you to enjoy something?..

I think some people on this thread are mistaking "absurd" in "absurdism" to mean stupid: absurd in the context of "absurdism" refers to meaninglessness.

I think here lies the issue. Most of us don't actually expect our waifu/husbando to like us, just as we don't expect our favorite show to love us back. At the end of the day, the fact that the one of them imitates the form of living beings with the ability to love doesn't matter--they are both, in fact, not living beings with the capacity to love. So we never expect that from them in the first place, and the desire for them love us never actually forms.

Well, as I showed in example.. We choose to believe in thing that marriage will last.. We choose to believe that we'll be happy by loving waifu.. It's all meaningless in the end, if speaking from some points of view, right?.. As it's kinda "untrue" objectively in one case, and "untrue" from some values point of view in second.. But it's alright if some things are not true, or are meaningless.. It's all relative in the end.. By some points of view, things will be untrue, by some meaningless, but really it's just point of view in the end.. Some of points of view being more popular than others..

What are waifus? Waifus are fictional 2D anime girls. We know they will never love us, yet we continue to cherish and love them anyway, despite knowing that no matter how much we love them, it is futile.
What do you guys think? Am I right?...Or am I right? ;)

@OfDeathandLove

What do you think of this?

Then what is absurdism? Do you know of any other source that explains it better?

I think some people on this thread are mistaking "absurd" in "absurdism" to mean stupid: absurd in the context of "absurdism" refers to meaninglessness.

I don't think absurd means 'stupid' but yeah I basically ignored the opening post.

Knowledge is limited, imagination encircles the world. Our love for our 2d female characters is illogical, basically the same as "doesn't the demon Lilith or archangel Michael look cool/hot/sexy".
