I'm really curious.

Why do people use a lot of ~~~ here in MAL?
Does it have anything to do with anime?
Where does it come from?

I need answers!!!!1

It's simple really, we somehow need to fill the missing characters so that we can evade character limit, and here a simple "~" can do the job perfectly.

Idk it's just so good. Basically makes all your sentences end up with a more energetic vibe. It's a fun and cutesy thing

I wouldn't say it's a MAL thing, more like an anime thing since it's kinda simulating the way moe girls talk in a way

It's not only on MAL. I believe you can see them anywhere as I've seen some people use those on my previous forums.

xD nice

Taken from the character limit warning:

"Warning: Please, do not bypass the character limit with random letters..."

I don't find it that prevalent though. For the most part I think it's used as either:

To connote a verbal tic (like nyaaa~~ or something for instance) (uncommon)
To give a sense of lethargy
or to replace "ish" (ironic considering 30 char rule)

I mean there's the to dodge limit thing but mostly people use ddfdf or some combination of letters to do that.

I use it when I'm feeling cheerful. Nothing wrong with that, yes?

It's called a 'tilde'.

Interesting...

Uses in Japanese include:

To indicate ranges (5ζ™‚γ€œ6ζ™‚, from 5 o'clock to 6 o'clock; ζ±δΊ¬γ€œε€§ι˜ͺ Tokyo to Osaka).
To separate a title from a subtitle on the same line; in English a colon is used for this purpose.
To mark subtitles: γ€œζ¦‚θ¦γ€œ
In pairs, in place of dashes or brackets: γ€œγ€œη”γˆγ€œγ€œ
To indicate origin: γƒ•γƒ©γƒ³γ‚Ήγ€œ (from France)
To indicate a long or drawn-out vowel (γ§γ™γ‚ˆγγ€œ or γ‚γ€œγ€œγ€œ), usually for comic or cute effect
To indicate or suggest that music is playing: ♬ γ€œ
To suggest a ruled line: γ€œγ€œγ€œγ€œγ€œ or γ€œγƒ»γ€œγƒ»γ€œ

Guess it's used here kinda inherited from Japanese.

Specially in this way:
To indicate a long or drawn-out vowel (γ§γ™γ‚ˆγγ€œ or γ‚γ€œγ€œγ€œ), usually for comic or cute effect.

Oh yes, I know this application, and also in Maths. But most of times I've seen it in other contexts here (or in anime related communities)

On any forum I use it to either fill the space or try to make it seem more vibrant and energetic

As people have said, it gives your "voice" a more upbeat tone: Right~?

On the flip side, it's also convenient for sarcastic/mocking emphasis: We can't all be ~happy~ and ~upbeat~ all the time just because you have a mental breakdown at the smallest hint of conflict, Susan.

Poor Susan tho.

It's like a tilde or a flourish. So, just understand it.

It has 2 uses I can think of right now:

1. When estimating something - "about" or "around"

I used to play with my favorite toy ~10 times a day when I was younger.

2. When drawing a rocket ship (the air in front of the ship before leaving Earth's atmosphere)

I believe it is used (mostly in anime) to prolong the vowel at the end of a word. Like when a cute anime girl says γ˜γ„γ„~ (jiiii) while staring at someone.

"~" represents the Home directory in Linux.

I hate it when people name files with a ~ at the beginning of them, because then I have to rename them, because you can't have files that begin with a tilde in the Home directory.

I use it when I am being teasing. Or when I am in a good mood and I just want to show it, haha. I also use it as a line break for my stories, to signify a change in setting.

probably just to add emotion to a sentence . But in Japanese it makes the sound a bit longer ex γ‹γ‚γ„γ„οΌˆkawaiiοΌ‰vsγ€€γ‹γ‚γ„γ„ο½žοΌˆkawaiiiοΌ‰plus it kinda looks cute, imo.
