Okay, now this is cool. Egyptian deathstep. This is more brutal and headbang-worthy than most metal. Nice cover art too. Plus he literally lives in Egypt. I discovered Anubis on the first link when I was checking out the artists on that label.

Also related. heh. This is a track by someone I already knew who does lots of styles.

Sorry for overwhelming you with music. But...I just found this really interesting band and they happen to be from Romania. This beautiful album can offset the aggressive stuff above. The second link is for a code to download it for free if you want.

I always type in a text file and periodically save my work. I also tend to compose long replies throughout the course of the day, since I have so many other things to do.

ugh...I have a grudge against laptops... I spent $2,000+ and $1,400 on my old laptops in 2005 and 2011. They (quite literally) fell apart over the years. The screen on one won't even stay upright because the hinges broke. Although they're still operational, I would have to replace their batteries to even turn them on. Same goes for the battery in my cheap tablet that only lasted a year. I got an old office PC and upgraded it with the best parts compatible with the crappy motherboard and power supply...and it vastly outperforms the laptops at a laughable fraction of the price. Reliability and customization are also far better with desktops. (And you don't need to worry about overheating or the battery depleting.) I would only ever get another laptop if I needed one for portability. I plan on building a fully custom desktop PC eventually.

So you didn't merely mean confident, but more like honorable strength? Long ago I read an article about how Satoko is sort of like the glue that holds the characters together.

It is impressive that you appreciate a wide range of genres. Most people would go crazy if they listened to all the stuff I do.

I came across a harsh noise album last night, but each of the two tracks was only one sound the entire time. If it's going to be like that, at least have some variety instead of what amounts to a test tone.

I posted streaming links for the sake of convenience. Did you mean you plan on pirating the lossless files from a file sharing program?

What did you mean by things I'm capable of in terms of a music collection?

You used to have to buy music on CDs (etc.) to hear an album. Now you can listen to most music out there for free online. (Albeit in lower quality.) Or get slightly higher quality with paid streaming services that are dirt cheap considering it's over a hundred million songs. But I prefer actually owning music and listening in a dedicated way. (Supporting the artists more directly is an added perk.) Plenty of artists give away downloads too. I mostly use free streaming to discover new music.

Physical formats like CDs, vinyl and tape sell surprisingly well even in this digital age. I think it's because that, even though just about anyone can listen online, many want to have something tangible and collectible if they're going to bother buying an album. I mostly buy lossless digital downloads nowadays since they're the cheapest "to own" format despite being the highest quality audio. I do miss the booklets with art and liner notes. (As well as fancy box sets.) Digital albums rarely come with booklets, and increasingly more releases are exclusively digital.

Wait...I'm an alien Egyptian cat demon god from another dimension? Yay~! :P

...I wrote that alien thing shortly after waking up without noticing you said human, not inhuman. As a result, I initially thought you meant music is more in tune with other realms or whatever. This is what happens when I'm running on low fuel. XD

Man, the quality in the various Dragon Ball anime is all over the place, but there are so many awesome moments it was worth it.

...I need to get this out of my system real quick. These are my top two AMVs. Both DBZ. Even if you don't care for the songs, you can tell there was heart put into making these. The lyrics match the scenes so well. Newer AMVs have fancier editing but are usually just random clips that don't match the lyrics or music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KED4R9f3uc8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QAsmmzyCFo

Yeah...it must have taken a lifetime for him to become that good at so many instruments. One time when I was on stage with him, a few of the better players got to do a solo...and when my turn came, I had no idea what I was doing and just winged it. Felt so awkward, but made for a prominent memory nonetheless.

Savage Garden were a pop band with #1 hits around the world in the late '90s and early 2000s. I still hear the songs in random places like stores. Their two studio albums are probably the most influential for me out of all the music I've heard. I don't care about most pop music (all too often it's bland and formulaic), but SG are in a different league. Darren became a solo artist in 2001.

About my music...heh...heh heh...I'll send you stuff privately later.

Which countries have you lived in?

One man black metal bands are fairly common. They typically use drum machines and do the guitars and vocals themselves. He also made dark ambient.

I had a much higher budget later in life and could have easily started my own record label and so on...but I was interested in other things. I did own other businesses in the past, but I did everything myself instead of hiring employees. I regret blowing so much on audio gear instead of reinvesting some of it. Some insane things happened to me in the past few years (including having an organ removed and getting hit by a car) and I will probably win a lot from lawsuits. (Though that might take years if I'm unlucky.) Then I can reinvest the way I should have.

I'm sort of a mini moderator on that metal site. I can edit most of the content there. (But I don't moderate users or anything.) I used to contribute a lot to the database back when I was more active in the underground metal community. (Now I mostly focus on electronic stuff.)

Is there a particular reason your brain is a mess? (As you put it.) In my case, I'm just too creative for my own good and can spread myself too thin. By the end of the day, I often find that I haven't accomplished most of my goals because I got distracted by any number of things.

Here's a folk metal song with a "hell yeah" feel. Two words: accordion solo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUOzWwxo2oc

Many folk metal bands are other genres too, like black metal, power metal, etc.

I postponed Madoka for years and sorely regret it. I thought it was gonna be another cutesy magical girl anime...but it's epic and a lot darker than I expected. It's on my favorites for a reason. Some of it is similar to the weirder parts of Evangelion. You didn't specify what he claims it lacks in, so I can't really comment on that aside from the fact that I love just about everything in that anime. The image is a parody of the famous Jesus heart art but with Madoka references. At any rate, three movies is just a few hours long, so not a sizable time investment. (I wouldn't recommend the series until after, if you're a completionist. The movies have a better cinematic flow along with a bunch of improvements. There's also a spin-off series that's not nearly as good.) Oh, and don't read any descriptions you encounter if you want to avoid spoilers.

YYH is long, so I would prioritize other things first. (Like Higurashi Kai and Madoka. watchthemwatchthemwatchthemsorrylol)

The manufacturer of the audio device actually did the engraving for me for free when I bought it. I just gave them a screenshot from the anime. Ha.

The police told me thieves steal lesser items like that (rather than pricier ones that are easier to notice and track down) because they probably wanted quick cash for drug money. :/ My landlord there was a cop for over 15 years and told me all someone has to do is remove part of the door siding, then swipe a credit card to open the door to the apartment. I was imprudent enough to not lock the deadbolt that day as I went out.

I did hear that Narutaru has more sexual content and gore in the manga. I don't think the anime sucks per se...but it does feel half-baked, like they could have done a lot better if they had a higher budget and more time to work with. I love the concept, anyway. It's like an edgy version of Pokemon. But it's not one I would recommend before plenty of others.

Kenji is my brother's favorite School Rumble character. (His favorite anime character is Excalibur from Soul Eater, who is super annoying but funny in an outlandish way.) I knew it would be, because their personalities are similar in some ways. lol. Yes, her crush is boring, but that's part of the ironic comedy, especially once Kenji finds out and conflicts arise. Made it for myself. :] I did have it on my old profile and shared it with a few people.

Speaking of coincidences...the other day, he started playing a game a friend introduced me to earlier this year. I never played it, but made art inspired by the characters. I never mentioned the game to my teammate until I noticed it on his Steam.

Zarutaku is a coward, editing his reply to you days afterward so you probably didn't see it.

Today a car was on fire right outside my house! The firemen hosed it down for a long time.

For the past few days, one of my ears has been vibrating with a low rumble and I have no idea why. Feels clogged but earwax isn't the culprit. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary; it was like that after waking up. I'm hoping it's just an infection that will pass on its own. If it persists for over a week, I'll have to go see a doctor about it...

Here are two hidden gems I recently discovered. The first (which I bought) is sort of experimental IDM (intelligent dance music) with other influences. Hard to pin down genre-wise. The latter is nu jazz. You can skim them by clicking the play button next to the tracks and moving the bar around. (Though listening through properly is more rewarding.)

https://indecayrecords.bandcamp.com/album/insect
https://chyo.bandcamp.com/album/piranha

I got Piranha for free via a limited time code. If you want to add it to your Bandcamp collection and download it in lossless FLAC, there are a few more free codes available here. The other album by the artist is already free...and I can't believe he didn't charge for it. Real artsy stuff.

I'll make playlists later for a few of the other artists that were mentioned. How many hours of music do you listen to each day on average? For me it's five to ten or more.
SmugSatoko Apr 21, 5:05 PM
How ironic that my friend found his way here not long after I started talking to you.

You *need* to see the Madoka Magica movie trilogy. The first two are like an improved version of the series while the third is a sequel. A fourth is coming soon. I was so enamored by it that my user name and persona here were Madoka-themed until a few years ago. To give you a little taste, this used to be on my profile.

Since you liked Hunter x Hunter, I'll show you the one-of-a-kind custom engraving on one of my audio devices. (click)

You probably know that Yu Yu Hakusho (another one of my first anime, still in my top 20) has the same creator. HXH feels like a more modern, mainstream YYH.

Wolf's Rain is another highlight on your plan to watch list. The last four episodes are a separate entry. The final episode is a masterpiece, with sublime music too. I had the DVD box set, but the discs were stolen in an apartment I lived in a long time ago. (They also stole the discs from my Fullmetal Alchemist box set.)

Narutaru is so messed up...and it's more impactful because it starts off like an innocent Pokemon-esque show. The premise is solid, but the execution is sub-par. I read some of the manga and it seems higher quality...but I heard it gets far more messed up than the anime.

I noticed you're reading School Rumble! That's my favorite comedy anime. (And my brother's favorite anime. A scene or two made us fall over laughing.) I adore Tenma. I used avatars of her on a non-anime site. Someone else (who later became an admin on the site) was amused by one of them and drew his version to use as his avatar for awhile. Here is a School Rumble wallpaper I made.

Your Blingee image reminded me of one I came across.

If you want a glimpse at Satoko's confident side, take a look at the spoiler on my profile. (It really is a spoiler for later in the anime, though.) You did see a bit of it in the first season too...like her playing pranks, setting traps, teasing her friends, and persevering through adversity.
SmugSatoko Apr 19, 11:52 AM
Who do you think Oyashiro-sama is? hehe

I'm still curious about which side of Satoko you were referring to.

Nice. I assumed too much. You're even more impressive in my eyes now. I've been into metal (and all sorts of other stuff) for decades. I'll share lots of interesting music with you later, including a handful of Nile tracks.

I have done vocals all my life, piano/synthesizers since the early '90s, and guitar and trombone since the mid-'90s. (Though I haven't been an "active" musician for many years.) I invested over $50K in my private music collection and collectively owned over a quarter million dollars worth of audio gear. So yeah...I'm realllly into music. XD

Ira Sullivan is a legendary multi-instrumentalist that occasionally rehearsed and performed with one of the jazz bands I was in. He was way better than us, but it was fun and not stressful at all. (Well, learning and memorizing the fast-paced material was stressful, but that had nothing to do with him.) Playing with more mainstream celebrities was actually easier than average, since I was used to complex classical music and so on.

My favorite male singer is Darren Hayes, the former vocalist of Savage Garden. Back when I practiced for hours every day, I could sing just like him. I even talked to him once. I used to want to be a famous pop singer and metal guitarist at the same time. Now I'd rather be unknown. (Or perhaps only slightly famous. I value privacy and freedom.) Even for the music I plan to release someday, it's for passion rather than money. I heard that only a small number of the millions of musicians out there make big money. The richest ones made most of it from other things anyway. It's not uncommon for famous artists to make under $50K per year, and that's mostly from touring and selling merch. (Instead of album sales. Online streaming killed off most of the revenue that used to exist for that. Even when that wasn't the case, the big record labels would frequently give little to the artists, sometimes even saying the artists owed them money, since it's so expensive to promote music and pay all the people who work in the industry.) I'm not interested in doing concerts anymore. It's grueling labor...especially the practice beforehand. (Not to mention having to travel.) Even for electronic concerts that typically don't involve playing an instrument, it's a lot of effort that doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather just focus on making music.

Back in the mid-2000s I ran an underground metal distro. I would buy CDs in bulk from record labels and sell them online. I planned on turning it into my own label. Just from online word of mouth (without really advertising it anywhere), people took notice and bands from all over the world sent me CDs for free in hopes of getting signed. One wasn't an unknown artist and just sent me dozens of their CDs to distribute because they wanted more exposure. I was friends with a one man black metal band who was going to be the first release on the upcoming label. I had thousands set aside for that...but due to a real estate fiasco (I got scammed by a company that was later shut down by the government), I ended up losing all the money and abandoned the distro and label plans.

https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Negur%C4%83_Bunget/4356

This is the best info site for metal. I haven't listened to that band in so long I can't think of a track to share as an introduction. I vaguely recall liking their Om album the most.

The main thing I do to engage with Portuguese culture is listen to Moonspell. (In other words, I know little about the culture as well. heh...) They're a more popular metal band, so I'm sure you've heard them before.
SmugSatoko Apr 17, 12:04 PM
What I meant is that people tend to look at their own profiles.

Which side of her do you mean?

I would love to know your thoughts on the mysteries and what could be going on, now that you've finished the first season.

It's a nice touch that the anime version looks more or less exactly like the real village from this vantage.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/whentheycry/images/0/06/Shirakawago.jpg

My hometown is gorgeous. Alas, I moved away at age 12 after my parents separated and my mother got her own job. I visited from time to time and even lived in a hotel there for a few months in the late 2000s. My grandpa was friends with the owner so I got a good price.

It goes into so much detail about mahjong it might as well be a tutorial.

DBZ has an iconic dub. (Although it's so popular it has been dubbed in English a handful of times. That's why I specify the first Funimation one.) I don't know what the ratio is, but quite a few (including myself) favor the dub for that series. (Possibly the majority of fans.) Plus like I mentioned, some versions of the dub have a more exciting soundtrack that really brings it to life.

Here are a few scenes with Vegeta showing the dub voice acting and soundtrack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZg_fRvqEks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePEmIMp2etA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihO-qB5CyBs

I've seen many thousands of anime episodes, often rewatching to see sub and dub, and I would say I prefer dub around 20% of the time. (Maybe higher for my top 30 anime. The dubs for Steins;Gate and Death Note are also noteworthy.) It's true that Japan has higher quality anime voice acting on average (I heard they have academies for that very purpose), but I don't think dubs are all that bad. (Some are, of course.) Those who bash dubs tend to lack experience with them. I think many American anime dub studios had a limited budget and probably couldn't afford to hire more renowned English voice actors.

On that note, Funimation's studio is right next to Gearbox, the developer of my #1 video game franchise Borderlands. (It's FPS with RPG elements and hilarious dialogue.) The English voice actors for DBZ voiced some characters in Borderlands games. DreamWindow (formerly StarfireDragon) is my teammate and we've been playing Borderlands 2. Last time we gamed together for seven hours straight! Kind of got carried away. My favorite character Gaige (who I usually play as) was voiced by Cherami Leigh, who did the voices for many anime characters.

The Eva spin-off made me laugh a lot...though it's certainly more of a low-brow, ridiculous type of humor. I literally cringed once or twice. I wasn't expecting something so silly from such a serious franchise.

For me, the definitive "so bad it's good" movie is...this one. (Just a clip.) My brother and I had a blast poking fun at it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZTIWNb-Sfo

I couldn't resist making that little joke. :D

Nile. They're technical death metal, so you may not like it. (Although there are intermittent acoustic instruments.) The founding member Karl Sanders has an Egyptian folk/ambient solo project too. I'll link to those albums.

Music is my life and I'm into most genres, but especially electronic, metal and classical. I used to be in orchestras, wind ensembles, marching bands, jazz bands, a metal band, etc. I even performed with celebrities a few times. Nowadays I only listen, but I plan on releasing some of my own music in various genres someday. (The only albums I played on in the past were CDs of live performances.)

Oh yeah! Your thread about culture and Romania reminded me that I bought box sets from a Romanian folk metal band a long time ago. I'm 1/4 Portuguese. My family said our ancestor discovered the Pacific Ocean in the US, but I'm not sure if it's true.
SmugSatoko Apr 16, 10:11 AM
Ah. haha. I'm surprised you didn't notice your profile comments for so long.

Satoko and I are basically both smug on the outside but crying on the inside. I've been through some of the same things as her (even been tortured) so I sympathized with her so much. We're also the crafty type who manipulate things in our favor from the shadows. (Though in my case, it's a lot more ethical than what she did in the later episodes.)

It's difficult to assess the writing without seeing the second season, since there are layers upon layers of mystery. For me, it's one of the most compelling and geniously conveyed stories in fiction. (And probably the story I care about the most. So heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.) It's just that the first season is confusing as heck and it makes no sense at first. Every time I rewatch it, I notice new things, like subtle hints. By the way, be sure to watch after the ending credits in Kai for the occasional extra scene.

I grew up in a mountain valley town with only around two thousand people...and across the mountains, there was a somewhat more urban town...just like Hinamizawa and Okinomiya! I connected with the characters and series even more because of that. Hinamizawa is based on a real Japanese village, in case you didn't know. Check out the photos.

https://whentheycry.fandom.com/wiki/Shirakawa-go

It's standard fare for additional seasons to fall short. Still enjoyed Kaiji more than most anime. (Looks like you discovered Akagi as well. Never knew mahjong could be so thrilling.) The narrator in the dub speaks in the same way I find so amusing, but I'd say it sounds even sillier in English. There's also a spin-off series Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues, but it's more comedy-oriented and only for the diehard fans.

Dragon Ball Z was the first anime series I saw in its entirety, in the early 2000s. I loved how they made a different, more exciting soundtrack for the first Funimation English dub. I've seen nearly all 800+ episodes in the franchise over the years. (As well as watching both sub and dub.)

The very first anime I saw, however, was the film Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland, in the early 1990s. It's sort of like an adventurous classic Disney movie but darker. I had no idea it was an anime until 2014. (It was produced in both America and Japan.)

Glad you liked Death Note. Now you can watch this. hehe

Since you're an Eva fan, this is a hidden gem. It's one of those "so bad it's good" things...so ridiculous I couldn't help but laugh. (And of course, the movies are worth watching.)

I started the Spice & Wolf remake. It's not nearly as iconic as the original anime and I don't like the new art style either, but I'm happy to be watching a reiteration of this charming tail *ahem* I mean, tale.

Speaking of Egyptian religion...I got this necklace in a limited edition box set in 2005. Only a few thousand were made. It's by a band who do extensive research into Egyptian mythology and integrate it into the lyrics.

Kemetism is OP in Crusader Kings 3.
SmugSatoko Mar 29, 5:35 PM
Yeah, one scene in particular made me cry the first few times I saw it. Satoko and I are alike in the best and worst ways. The second season (Kai) is also stellar and reveals mysteries from the first. The franchise has about a hundred episodes, but the first two seasons are the essential story. The original source material is a visual novel series that's many times longer.
I was going to ask you if you planned on watching the second season of Kaiji (one of my top 20 anime) soon, but it turns out getting distracted by other things answered that question for me. I actually rewatched the first season last August since an English dub was released. Sub tends to be better, but dubs increase the rewatch value for me. I love the exaggerated way that narrator speaks.
It's cool that you're friends with FriedVibes. He and I sort of became music buddies.

I wonder which one of us despises materialism more. This site seems disproportionately replete with those who believe humans are nothing more than chemicals...

The last time I tried to show this individual how wrong he was (about another topic: audio), he immediately resorted to insults and refused to even read what I said, despite the fact that I had thousands of times more experience in that field. I could tell him about the evidence for souls, such as near-death experiences wherein people could see and hear specific things in the real world that were verified even though their bodies were clinically dead...but I already know he doesn't care about truth, nor an honest conversation...so do with that link what you will.
I'm glad you're watching Higurashi. That's my favorite anime. It gets intense not long after the point you're at.

definitely. not to mention that we are all dumb and sometimes even we post things that we probably should have kept to ourselves but then knowing that something like that is stored somewhere is just scary. let´s take MAL as an example, how many of those who post in provocative threads, express their controversial opinions oh so openly would actually stand in front of a group of "normiesů as they say and be able to successfully defend their ideas? how many of them would actually ever be that vocal in the first place?

and of course there are benefits like shy people finding a safe haven where they can be themselves but we should never forget that before we are gonna go and judge younger generations for being this or that, WE are the ones who actually created this mess of a world in the first place. can´t blame boomers forever :).

haha watching that many is good though because it gives you a choice. my worst habit is watching new things instead of going through my lists of PWT OR PWR.

the fillers in manga or anime, are the worst :D. unless the thing is actually good, in that case I am ok. were older anime better at handling fillers?

oh gosh, I hope heroin addicts have better things to do than watch anime though :D. like maybe getting help :D

I hope it is called like that :D. I think I googled that term for the end of August, beginning of September.
effy_ Aug 22, 2023 4:37 AM
I think that would be lovely. to just start again or just maybe hold people more accountable for their actions online. I only wish for people to realize that what they say online is not some anonymous bullshit but it affects people. it doesn´t matter whether it is online or in real life, these are real human being behind those screens. you can´t just do whatever you want because no one sees your face.

oh the vase thing sounds a bit cute though :D. not gonna lie.

I have suddenly discovered this wonderful title "Afterschool Insomniacs" and I am just loving the title so much I am considering reading it because it seems interesting (and the title) it just gets me. what a wonderful name for a club. I have like 5 manga I am supposed to be reading, I am horrible. I need to work on my commitment issues.

I am just happy I have finally whipped myself to watch Monster despite crying about 74 episodes :D.

I think what can "make anime great again" is just finding great people to surround yourself with and let the rest rot :D.

OMG, I AGREE WITH YOU. love love love autumn. especially the "Indian summer" part when it is still warm but not hot anymore but you can wear a comfy hoodie or a jumper and when it´s sunny and lovely. agh, I hope we are both gonna get good autumn this year.
