Hello internet! ^_^ Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen a thread with this topic, so I've decide to pop the question myself!

Anyway, I've recently rewatched Berserk (1997) and remembered just how STUPIFIED I was with all the "shenanigans" in the last couple of episodes (shit really did go "berserk"). That got me thinkig about shocking endings and how difficult it is to actually get them right. Personally, I think Berserk was spot on - it didn't come out of nowhere, but it wasn't staring you in the face the whole time. How about you? Any anime that did it better?

What do you guys think of unexpected endings in general? Love 'em, hate 'em, or don't care? :D
What makes a good twist ending, and where is the line between a "forced/deus ex machina" solution and a "hell no - I did NOT see that one coming" ending?

As always, every reply will be saluted ^_^ Only this time, I have a small request - if you're gonna name the SPECIFICS, I implore you to use THE SPOILER BUTTON! Thank you in advance, good people of MAL \^_^/

A good ending is something which brings the story threads, whether those be plot-based, character-based or theme-based to a conclusion in a way which both makes sense given what had happened previously, and also adds meaning to what had happened previously.

I think the most shocked I've been by an ending would be the last arc of the Narutaru anime, although it's not a particularly good ending due to being rather disconnected with the rest of it. It's a very good little arc, but it's only good as an arc in itself, it's not good as a conclusion to the overall story.

The ending of Code Geass is wonderful and clever, but I don't think there's much that's shocking about it. I didn't anticipate the plan, but that's not enough to shock.

Shin Sekai Yori has what is a very good ending and is probably shocking to a large proportion of its audience, but I totally saw it coming.

I think the best combination of "actually works well as an ending" and "shocked me" might be Utena.

@Emperor98 Evangelion messed with me so much, I was really confused at first and didn't really like it, but the more I thaught about it - the more I was fine with it. And it was out of the blue kinda, but it's a weird anime, so I guess it goes with it xD

@russmaltes aaaah I'm getting there, 40 more chapters to go !! Do you mean Re or the first one? :D

@Swagernator I've never seen the Batman series, unless you count the films as well, but those I didn't particulary like xD

@logopolis can you usually predict the ending? :D Cause I'm not too shabby myself, when it comes to films, but anime I started watching recently, so they can still surprise me :D

@Vladivostock LOGH = Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Someone already recommened me that, so now I'm def intrigued, since you say the ending is unexpected. You meant it in a good way, right? :D

I have to agree with Berserk. Other anime that has some fucked up season finales is Jigoku shoujo. On the other hand, Clanad After story has some pure fan service shit of an ending that shouldn't exist.

Yes! I actually accidentally spoiled Clanad After Story for myself, and was shocked to see the "deus ex machina" ending O_O That would be an example of a forced, stupid solution xD

The definitive answer has been given. THE most iconic manga/anime ending.
Just check my manga list if you want the anime scores... I'd mostly rate them the same unless there's any significant change to the plot.

I'd say Cowboy Bebop but I already knew what was gonna happen before watching it and Ashita no Joe seems to have the most shocking ending in this medium, the problem is , that I already know what happens at the end , and I haven't even seen it , blame the Internet...

NGE ending isn't shocking btw, it's weird and confusing but not shocking .

and what about Courage : The Cowardly Dog ? ,that last episode got to be by far the creepiest ep in the series , it was the perfect ending for a perfect cartoon .

Definitely the most impactful ending out there.

School Days-Ok I already heard that the ending is a shocker, but wasn't expecting a massacre tbh, without preknowledge it has to be a big surprise

Inuyashiki-

Shinsekai yori-the big relevation was properly built up throughout the show, yet it still managed to surprise me big time.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0- that end belongs to the category more obvious ones, since there were many obvious hints, despite that it was done so well, all the emotions hit you at once.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Akame ga Kill because I thought Tatsumi was the main character since he had gotten more screen time and better character development than Akame since she barely got screen time and IMO she did not really get much character development in the anime
