A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has hit central Chile, killing at least 78 people, ministers say.

The quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in affected areas and appealed for calm.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific island nations.

Alerts were also earlier issued for Antarctica and Central America.

Santiago airport has been closed and all flights cancelled until further notice, airline officials say. Flights are being diverted to Mendoza in Argentina.

Aftershocks

The earthquake is the biggest to hit Chile in 50 years.

Giving details of the latest casualties, Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma said 34 of the deaths were in Maule, 13 in the Santiago municipality and four in Valparaiso.

"The death toll will continue rising," he said.

President Bachelet said: "People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information [we have] we will share immediately."

She said a "wave of large proportion" had affected the Juan Fernandez island group, reaching halfway into one inhabited area.

She said if there were more aftershocks, people in coastal areas should go to higher ground.

Ms Bachelet warned people not to travel on roads in affected areas as a number of bridges were down.

Chilean officials said the worst affected town appeared to be Parral, close to the epicentre.

Chilean television said there had been a fire involving chemicals in the town of Colina, 20km north of Santiago, but that it was now under control.

Several hospitals have had to be evacuated in a number of areas, including Santiago, because of structural damage.

'Everyone fears aftershocks'

One resident of Chillan, 100km from the epicentre, told Chilean television the shaking there lasted about two minutes.

Other residents of Chillan and Curico said communications were down but running water was still available.

Many of Chile's news websites and radio stations are still not accessible.

Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 35km.

It also recorded eight aftershocks, the largest of 6.9 magnitude at 0801 GMT.

The USGS said tsunami effects had been observed at Valparaiso, west of Santiago, with a wave height of 1.69m above normal sea level.

One journalist speaking to Chilean national television from the city of Temuco, 600km south of Santiago, said many people there had left their homes, determined to spend the rest of the night outside. Some people on the streets were in tears.

A university professor in Santiago, Cristian Bonacic, said that this was a massive quake but that the cities seemed to have resisted well. Internet communications were working but not mobile phones.

Chile is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it is situated on the Pacific "Rim of Fire", on the edge of the Pacific and South American plates.

Chile suffered the biggest earthquake of the 20th century when a 9.5 magnitude quake struck the city of Valdivia in 1960, killing 1,655 people.

I've read on a site that there was over 20 aftershocks and still going...

For a second, when I heard the news, the way the picture was presented I thought the entire continental shelf of chilli had cracked off because of the earthquake and chilli had fallen into the ocean. Like lex luthor tried to do in superman to California, and that a massive tidal wave was heading toward the opposite continents. That, would have been a Global disaster. It's still pretty bad news though.

At least this wasn't a part 2 to the Valdivia earthquake that Chile had in 1960 where 1,000+ people died and Tsunamis from the earthquake affected people in Japan, Philippines, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and even parts of Alaska.

Nature is being fun lately. I bet it's PMS.

Just a couple of days ago a storm hit our island and almost 50 people died. I guess it's not that important.

This news is a personal thing for me. I have family in Chile (my grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins). and I think everyone is alright, but now they have no electricity, water system is f**ked up, etc. I pray for my family and the people living in there who are affected by this.

Man there sure is happening a lot lately with mother nature. :/
I hope there won't be anymore deaths than these 78, though I'm suprised that the number is so low, not that I want it higher, but I mean this earthquake was stronger than the one in Haiti.
I also hope there won't be such a big tsunami, so the destruction won't increase further, but man that sure was one big earthquake. D:

While I'm not that knowledgable about Chile, I think it's safe to say that it isn't as impoverished as Haiti is. So Chile would have better resources for its buildings, thus the buildings themselves would have better structure. You might as well say Chile made it's house out of bricks, while Haiti had no choice but to make it's house out of straw or sticks.

(Or that we didn't keep good records in the past)

Also I hear Chile is a really great country, and is definitely not impoverished and was prepared. Still, I hope that things don't get too bad there.

I live on a fault line too~

2012 isn't the end of the world. It marks a new era. That's my opinion, though, think however you want.

But I have to say nature must be feeling pretty badass right now having done so much damage in the last ten years..

Considering the frequency and the rate at which these earth quakes (and other natural disasters) are occurring, I would say that our little world is screwed. Big time.

It's interesting that despite this earthquake being roughly 100 times more powerful on the Richter scale than the one in Haiti, it has killed 1,000 times fewer people. (250 compared to 200,000)

That's the difference between an impoverished, third-world nation and a reasonably modern, prosperous one.

Irk. Saw there's looting in the towns by the coast. What's with all these major earthquakes all of a sudden? In any case, hope the best for the Chileans in the coming days, and good thing the tsunami heading to Hawaii wasn't as bad as it could've been.

Chilean here.

The worst wasn't the earthquake, because we're prepared for those, but the fact that there were a bunch of tsunamis and they didn't say anything about it on radio or anywhere. (because half of the country doesn't even have electricity, here we got it like 10 minutes ago).

I wasn't on the worst zone, but it still was 7.5 on the Richter scale.

Oh yeah, and everyone is freaking out like it's the end of the world.

Also, ask me anything lol.

Is the tsunami in Japan caused by this? or seperate event?

The tsunami warning appeared on TV last night, affecting the whole east coast of Japan.
It probably also killed someones too.

Haiti is still under rescue. Infection spreading. Dirty street, bad air as People need to burn lots of garbage to prevent infection.
