No, but I'm capable of distinguishing between reality and fiction like a normal person, so I have no problem with it.
And I can distinguish between the two, doesn't mean that shota's discomfort with Lucoa is any less creepy nor that I don't think it's funny. Shocker, I don't think it's funny for a little boy to be harassed by an older woman and be obviously discomforted with it whether it's reality or fiction. which if you look between the lines of my long post, is what I meant to say. That doesn't make me a pussy, and many other people had the same problems
if you read the reviews containing actual criticisms of the show who didn't blindly rate it a 10/10.
As for technical aspects this show isn't really anything significantly subversive than any other slice of life other than having dragons and implied lesbianism. I give it props for Kobayashi, Tohru, and Fafnir as good chars, doesn't mean I'm not going to down rate my final score because of the tasteless segments and the bad characters who deterred my enjoyment.
My problem isn't just the ecchi tropes, it's the way the ecchi tropes are utilized, the obvious and realistic discomfort of a little boy being molested and sexually harassed by an older woman, people excusing it, and the author's history of pornographic shota and the fetishization of prepubescent boys being very very prevalent in his work.
If lucoa were simply a slut bimbo character who didn't do anything except be publicly indecent and unaware of human morals by just dressing like a skank, she could be okay, that'd be a tasteless joke done right. It doesn't make the audience cringe, but it's tasteless in a humorous way. I don't like shota being harassed, showing obvious discomfort with that, and I don't think it's funny. Fiction or reality a lot of viewers found it disgusting and unfunny, not just me.
Overall this anime has discomforting aspects, some good aspects, but the discomforting and annoying aspects deterred a lot of people's enjoyment and it's completely understandable why they did. So no, it's not some SUBVERSIVE TAKE ON SLICE OF LIFE UWU, it's one that has some good ideas and was good before the introduction and focus on characters who sucked, and ultimately meandered along and has kind of lost its way. I'm not fully finished yet.
To be honest I don't want to hate any part of it, because I do like Kobayashi a lot, Fafnir is a very fun character who doesn't get enough focus, Tohru is for the most part able to do things right, and on her own without Riko, Kanna is a cute girl who behaves like a curious child character does. There are good aspects to the show. I simply am not going to overlook something that deters my enjoyment of those parts, though.
I think you're overreacting, the good greatly outshines the bad in Dragon Maid.
