Okay so pretty much everyone these days is familiar with tattoos and piercings but extreme body modification is more on the heavy end of things.

For the sake of keeping on topic as these subjects would need their own topic for the debate they'd stir up so let's exclude discussing body modifications that are done against the will of who it is done to or is pushed on them by their culture so this would leave out things like baby/infant circumcision, yubitsume, neck stretching, female genital mutilation, and breast ironing. This would however still allow for discussion of corseting since this is no longer common practice. Since there is already a thread about tattoos and piercings as well as thread that is older now about hair dying let's also not discuss those here. I think ear stretching can count as an extreme body mod if we are talking large gauge.
Just in case someone decides to post pictures I should note if you post pictures of the procedures or unhealed images for some pictures you might have to follow the forum guidelines for gore since some can fairly graphic sometimes so you'd have to mark it nsfw/nsfm spoiler and just use a link rather than embed ( maybe a mod could come in and clarify that if I am right), same with nudity. If you forget to do that you will likely just scare people off from the discussion and get problem with mods.

Some body moders have procedures which doctors would refuse to do so they are performed by people without a medical license to get a hold of anaesthetics unless they find ways around that. Some extreme body modifications can be very dangerous such as sclera tattoos.

Here are some examples of what extreme body mods before I ask my discussion questions.I'm placing them in spoilers since some are larger pictures, these are just the finished result pictures after healing has taken place.
Horn implants - usually subdermal but sometimes transdermal

Subdermal implants

Tongue bifurcation (tongue splitting)

Sclera tattoo ( eyeball tattoo)

Scarification

Ear pointing -one of the most common types of ear shaping

When you put several things together you can get interesting results

There are many more. Warning proceed at your own risk when looking around. You may see things that can not be unseen and haunt you in your sleep.

What do you think of extreme body modification in general or about specific modifications?

Have you ever known someone who had any type of extreme body mod? How did you react to find out when they told you? Or if it is visible in daily life how did you react when you first saw them?

What do you think makes a person want to go to such extremes for self expression? Do you consider people who get extreme body modifications to be very expressive or just mentally ill? What do you think the line can be drawn between body modification and self mutilation?

If you can afford go nuts. But those people who are like always broke asf and they're buying this shit. You're just stupid.

Some look cool and some are a bit ridiculous. Like the tongue one and the eyeball one. White eyeballs would be sick. I always wanted that ever since I saw them do it on Heroes when they go into precognition lolll.

The eyeball one tho how is that even possible without blindness?

There are people who think it's a form of beauty and self expression... and there are some people who just really want to look like an elf/lizard/parrot/other random animal.

I find it kinda scary tbh... and I feel like a lot of it is a product of attention seeking or trying too hard to be an individual. But beauty's in the eye of the beholder and all that so I try not to judge too much...

The sclera is the whites of your eyes not the iris. If you look cloely th ons who look like their eyes are totally black actually have brown irises.

If you want white eyes just wear contacts. Thre are ons where your iris is white so you just have the central pupil dot but there are also ones where its entirely white and has some mesh pattern i think or something you look through idk how they look up close. If you wnt the sclera ( whites) of your ey to b a diffrent colour than whit youd need sclera cotacts which are quite large and uncomftorabl and cant be worn more than a few hours at a time.

Yes, there is a risk of blindness with a sclera tattoo. The effects arent well known

I think it's a waste of money. I don't have any body mods or tattoos at all. I knew a girl who had her teeth modded to look like a vampire. I thought it was cool but a week later she got in a fight and punched in the mouth, the teeth broke, lmao

people just do it because they can and feel like it. people wanted all this freedom, well this is what it looks like, lol. they're not mentally ill per se, it's kind of a defiant, childlike "I'm gonna do it just because I can" type thing. you could say they're just not mature, but then again, not many people ever do grow up these days

What method did they use? Since you can either get fake teeth made then put in or have your real teeth filed sharp ( which destroys the enamel so youd have to eat very healthy to not cause a problem).

I'm not gonna look at the pics because I'm a little bitch when it comes to stuff like that, but does extreme body modifications include cutting off your arms and implanting advanced cybernetics, same with other missing body parts, because I would throw money at that.

I would never do any of it myself and don't find it visually appealing, but if someone wants to do that to their own body, I don't care at all; it's their body and they can do whatever they want to it.

I think some of those photos might have scarred me for life lol.

I'm not a fan of tattoos or piercings to begin with, I personally think they look kind of tacky and unprofessional, so I'm especially not a fan of even more extreme stuff.
This whole kind of thing is just not my cup of tea.

I wonder what makes people so attracted to these modifications. Most tattoos and piercings look bad enough unless done by a real professional. Nothing fundamentally wrong with all of this, perfectly legal, but these people need to realize how fucking stupid they look. If people had these modifications in medieval Europe, they would be labelled the devils reincarnation and burned for witchcraft or some shit.

I don't think it's sexy. I even thing some of the extreme stuff is really disgusting. But if they like it they can do it. I don't care. They just should not expect others to like it.

That's my opinion. I don't want to attack/insult those people. But I can't change my opinion and say that I think it is beautiful.

As long as I tolerate/accept it I think it is okay to say that it is disgusting if you really think so and don't like it.

Yes, amputations are considered extreme. Implanting technology into your body is extreme. There is one body mod which all they do is put a small magnet under your skin, like at your finger tip so you can pick things up magnetically.

But you also would have been burned as a witch for just about everything people do these days though really but yeah some of them do look demonic but sometimes that is the intent.

Yeah quite a number of my friends are very alternative (I myself used to be very goth). I also had some scarification done back in the day (only a little bit and TBH its pretty much disappeared now). But amongst my friends, one person had a split tongue and there's generally been a thing with people getting those giant ear holes etc (and some people are VERY tattooed).

I've never been phased by other people's body modifications whatsoever. In fact I'm much more likely to judge someone negatively for getting a bad tattoo (which is a waste of good skin and reflects poorly on your decision making abilities and taste in art etc) than simply for having a tattoo (which I don't give a hoot about).

Apart from a little scarification though, I've never modified my body beyond a few ear piercings in each ear (which I grew out a long time ago).

I think some people are just very creative in their personal sense of style. That there's nothing wrong if they would like to look more like a dragon or a pixie or something. Society can be so oppressive in making people conform in appearance and I think that its not how some people are choosing to express their personal style that is the problem, but rather that so many people feel that they can't really be themselves at all (that they struggle to find flamboyant or interesting clothes, that their employer forbids them to even dye their hair a funny colour, that they fear their friends would view them as a freak and reject them if they expressed themselves how they really wanted to be etc) that is the real issue.

My only concern about all these implants is that;

1. Its the bodies natural reaction to reject and remove foreign objects inserted into it and many people have a lot of issues with body rejection and dermal implants etc. On top of this the laws regarding health & training in many places which people get these sorts of body modifications done is often mediocre (or even practically non-existent).

So from a health point of view this sort of stuff is somewhat concerning.

2. For some people modification becomes an addiction. And in the case of such people I think there perhaps should be some sort of mental health assessment. Its kind of like when you get those women who have body dysmorphia and severe self-esteem issues and get addicted to having boob jobs- I think the plastic surgeons who just keep on taking the money off such women and stuffing more silicone into them are highly unscrupulous.

I don't think a desire to look different should be treated in society as a sign of mental illness. However a small minority of people may indeed modify themselves because they have mental health problems.

What do you think makes a person want to go to such extremes for self expression?
feels of rebel.

Do you consider people who get extreme body modifications to be very expressive or just mentally ill?
They're so very expressive that they're mentally ill. No. wait. I think they're very expressive on their "mental illness". Which actually help them to stay "sane"

What do you think the line can be drawn between body modification and self mutilation?
body modification shape your body while retaining the health. self mutilation straightly deteriorate your body.

There are a few "extreme" things I've considered. Scarification is the biggest one. That or possibly branding.
I like the ear pointing, but I wouldn't spend the money on it.
I'd maybe have caps on my teeth to sharpen them, but probably wouldn't do the file that was discussed ^ up there.
Personally, I really like body mods and think they pretty cool

Not going to lie, some of them do creep me out a bit, but some look really sweet. I quite like the pointy ears and scarification.

I've never seen anyone with these kind of body mods irl. Just the ring things in the ears, but that doesn't seem as extreme anymore these days.
I don't think I'd ever get a body mod myself as I'd probably end up regretting it later on (also I have no idea what the hell I'd get). I have no issues with people who do this kind of thing, but I just hope they thought it over well and didn't make a rash decision.

I'm curious, do those eyeball tattoos damage your eyes? It looks like it would worsen your eye sight.

They can damage your eyes if infection gets in (and that is a very real risk of getting eyeballs tattooed as tattoos in general are prone to infection & irritation when healing etc). However it is a new procedure (hardly been around for any time at all) and only a tiny fraction of people have gotten it done and so quite frankly, nobody really knows what the long term health implications of tattooing eyeballs are (there are all kinds of theories & concerns but none of them are really provable due to the lack of studies and patients etc).

Did you do it yourself or did you have someone slice out your skin for you? Im not sure how deep they go when they are removing skin. I have trouble imagining how much pain would be involved with bits of flesh cut off.

Did they split it themselves with fishing line (or whetever) or had it surgically done all at once? Im guessing the first is more likely

I do think many are expressive but sometimes some of them I wonder if they are trying to not be themselves but distance themselves from themselves and even humanity.

1. I think in the US it's not regulated too much. I was told in the UK they make people have to get a degree just to do tattoos even.

2. I noticed some people who self harm are also into body mods. Even just tattoos some people do it for the pain. Also there is people with Body Integrity Disorder who desire limb removal.

Elf/vulcan ears are my fav when they turn out well. The thing with scarification is you don't exactly have full control over how it turns out so some areas might be thicker than others in how it scars up. Also depends on what ethnicity someone is, I heard black people have a higher percentage of people with some condition where scarring gets very thick.

That alone would scare me off enough to never get one :P
They do look pretty cool, but the risks are scary.

You can achieve a similar look with sclera contacts but you cant wear them too long. The risk with those are just about same as other contacts. Id imagine thy are hardr to put in and take out because they are larger though. Not quite the same look since it looks more glossy being not an actual eye.

I like the ear pointing, but I wouldn't spend the money on it.
I'd maybe have caps on my teeth to sharpen them, but probably wouldn't do the file that was discussed ^ up there.
Personally, I really like body mods and think they pretty cool

Branding doesnt turn out as clean lines i think but im not sure.
You would have to have room in your mouth if you had caps since they have to fit somwhere when you close your mouth or unless they are designed to stick out. Pretty sure they are expensive like other dental work.

Branding doesn't always heal as well because it's burning off skin instead of a clean cut. I lean more towards scarification. But branding I feel has a bit more meaning in certain situations. Which is why it's appealing
I'd more likely just buy those really well made teeth molds you slip over yours.

Oh I did it myself. I have a naturally high resistance to pain so it wasn't too bad. I wanted a fine linear design so I didn't have any flesh cut out etc. Instead I simply had a design drawn on with a very fine sharp blade. If you let the design heal up and then re-cut the lines (and you repeat this a few times etc), you can build up scar tissue that actually lasts (my design lasted about 8 years, which was perfect).

The only drawback is that you have to be very careful not to let any part of the design get infected because if that happens, the scar tissue will develop in a thicker and less uniform manner. I was probably luckier than most in the results I got though as I am prone to scarring and so didn't have to go through much to end up with a very satisfying design.

TBH I wouldn't blame some people from wanting to distance themselves a bit from the thronging masses of humanity. Sometimes I wonder though if some people just like to look a little scary or something (because that makes them feel more strong/dominant/confident as an individual).

In regards to tattooing in the UK, well it goes a bit like this;

Tattoos are basically not rebellious anymore. In fact they're getting decidedly mainstream and tattoo fads abound. And most of this has happened over a very short period of time (there's been a big boom in the popularity of tattoos over the last 10 years alone).

And this means that tattoo parlours have absolutely boomed in recent years so that even many of the most boring quiet suburban towns have their own tattoo parlour or two. The downside of all this though is that mediocre tattoo artists have also proliferated in recent years (and the average quality of tattoo artists is actually arguably quite mediocre).

To be a tattoo artist though you typically have to do an apprenticeship. And to get an apprenticeship you have to build up a portfolio of art to show off your talents- it doesn't even have to be tattoo designs, it just has to be good art which displays your potential and skills etc well. So you then take your portfolio around to established tattoo artists. If one feels that you are worth taking on (and they want to take on an apprentice and feel that you have what it takes etc), then a contract is drawn up.

Most apprenticeships are very hard to get through though as not only do they often last 2-3 years, but you will be expected to work at least part time and quite often for no pay at all. There is a lot of observation involved before you are even allowed anywhere near a needle. And then even then, the first person you tattoo will usually be yourself (hence why so many tattoo artists arms are covered in tattoos- a lot of them were done by the artist themself when in training).

However eventually you complete your training and make your debut as a fully fledged artist. Most tattoo artists dream is to set up their own parlour but many are relegated to working for others for at least a number of years first (and its unusual to get a tattoo parlour that isn't run by a tattoo artist). Apprenticeships can vary a lot though (so the way I describe it is not always the way it happens). And more lately the government has taken interest in health & safety standards (I can't remember if they've made health certificates mandatory yet or not though).

Also there are a lot of unscrupulous tattoo artists out there who will do fast track apprenticeships. These artists in turn produce a lot of bad artists. But they don't care about their reputations (only the money) and there are a lot of artists like this around as many customers in turn are more concerned about the price of their tattoos rather than the quality of them (and do next to no research etc).

So although things are somewhat regulated...Its still really advisable to do a lot of research. There are some superb tattoo artists out there however you will often have to join a waiting list and pay a pretty buck to get a tattoo done by those ones.

You also get tattoo designers but while many tattoo artists will design tattoos, no tattoo designer will actually tattoo people. The realm of the tattoo designer is purely to come up with new designs (which tattoo parlours in turn buy). However its not quite as simple a job as it sounds as not only do the designs have to be immaculate to have any appeal, but you also need to have a very good understanding of what actually makes a good tattoo design from a structural etc point of view (its not all about aesthetics- some designs are more suited to being tattoos than others).

I love pretty much every body mod, even if I wouldn't do it to myself, and even if I don't I'd never call someone else's body disgusting because I have fucking manners. As long as they want to look like that I'm happy for them.

What I care about is accepting the seriousness of all body modifications. The problem with body mods becoming more popular is you have a lot of shoddy artists and a lot of people getting them done who don't understand how long-lasting they are and how to care for them. IMO even earlobe piercing is a serious business and you shouldn't get it done if you don't understand the seriousness of basically purposefully wounding yourself and caring for the wound so it heals appropriately. You need to know that the person who is doing the mod is knowledgeable, and you yourself need to have the foresight to do your research before you get it done so you know beforehand what you are getting into.
People highly invested in the body mod community save up for ages to travel to artists who have the skills necessary to perform modifications they want. It's pretty permanent (even your lobes will never go back to how they were before) so it shouldn't be taken lightly. This applies to tattoos and piercings as well as extreme mods.

Personally, I love scarification and I'd rather have that than a tattoo probably. I just worry that how my own body tends to scar means it might not work well for me.

The tough guy acting types are more likely to do it to be tough appearing but the more timid people its harder to tell if they are trying to be scary to feel powerful.

Oh I see. Im guessinng it was simple designed since I would think any closed lines would result in skin flaps or a layer of skin falling off.

Well yeah I get that you would do an apprenticeship as that is done everywhere i think but thats just for being hired. I was thinking more along the legal and applicatio requirements line of things. The person who told me what they did was a friend in the UK who considered being a tattoo artist. Maybe i remember wrong or she wasnt right on that.

I've always had the opinion of its your body so go for it but I think people should understand that when they have this sort of stuff done you will struggle to get a job, get funny looks and comments and not everyone will accept you for it and complaining that its "societys" fault that you cant get a job then you have metal studs planted into your skull, 2 red eyes and those ear stretcher things in to the size of a hockey puck no one will, unless your getting a job in that industry.
Personally I hate them, regular tattoos are where I finish, but like I said your body but dont complain when it lands you with a very narrow future.

In the actual legal side of things you can get a health and safety certificate but how much of a legal obligation it is to get it at the moment I don't know now- it didn't use to be a legal obligation (but I know that the law was on the cusp of being changed last time I looked into it).

I've known about these for a loooong time, but they've always been a bit out there for me. I have a couple tattoos and I'd like to get a few more, but I'm scared of piercings and anything beyond that is forbidden territory for me. In a partner, I'd have to like them A LOT to be able to look past some of these things, like the horn implants. The one you chose for scarification is pretty nice and I'd consider something like that because it's kind of like a more visible white ink tattoo haha. You have to scar amazingly well for that to come out nicely though.

The tongue was the freakiest IMO.

these are pretty vanilla. but if I were to get a serious body mod like horns or larger dermal implants, I'd rather just be completely covered in it
