I've always liked Quiet from MGS5 just because she can scout areas and head shot soldiers with no effort. I also like Paladin Danse from Fallout 4 because he's such a bro, he is like buzz lightyear and his power armor makes him tanky. What about you, do you have any favourites?

I honestly prefer D-Dog in MGS Phantom Pain, Quiet seems rather limited in use and you can't position her anywhere you want.

As for the best, Ellie for The Last of Us might make it. I'm just joking, I don't really know.

Bastila from KOTOR immediately comes to mind. I had a great time teasing her.

Alyx from Half-Life 2. I just like her character as a whole a lot, and I've always loved whenever she was with us. Sometimes it's sad to see people talking about Elizabeth (from Bioshock) being so human and interactive and stuff. Like, where were you during HL? She seems to be the same kind of realistically written character as her. But of course I like Elizabeth a lot too.
I would say Wheatley and GLaDOS too, but I'm not sure if they can really be called companions. Again, pretty much because of their great personalities.

Sparx from Spyro the Dragon is pretty cool. I also love Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow and how they brought that feature back in HeartGold and SoulSilver. I know that this isn't the question, but one of my least favorite video game companions is Tails (҂⌣̀_⌣́)

Dogmeat. He is smarter than all of the characters combined in the game. And also he can carry big boy.

All the side characters you get in Paper Mario TTYD, they all have different personalities and duo attacks with Mario.

In no particular order:
Goris form Fallout 2 - smart and badass, what else could you need?
Minsc and Boo form Baldur's Gate - no comment needed.
RFS-81 from Wizardry 8 - a party filled with mages, rogues, rangers and other fantasy classes simply needs a nasty android and his robotic comments.
HK-47 from KOTOR - for killing meatbags.
Sugarette from Swordcraft Story - obviously for yuri reasons. ^^
And most characters from Planescape Torment, because they are all awesome.

Elisabeth from Bioshock Infinite - She's cute, helpful and funny. Probably has the best SFM porn ever made.
Naoto from Persona 4 - She's cute, intelligent (at least more than the idiots in your party) and pretty much the only character in the cast that doesn't make me cringe like crazy with her dialog.
Hk-47 from KOTORI&II - Hilarious murderous machine that enjoys killing meatbags.
Olivier from Trails in the Sky - Pretty much the only character from the series that I actually like besides Estelle. Both him and her bring the humor in the two games.
Carisa, Alfons and Gisele from Valkyria Chronicles 3 - The first is a qt merchant obsessed with making money and was actually a NPC before joining your team later on, Alfons is a spy that is both clever and funny and the later is a batshit insane pyromaniac girl that wants to set everything she sees on fire. They're overall entertaining.
Clementine and Kenny from The Walking Dead - They're pretty well writen characters and their development in the two seasons was great to see.
Akihito, Shinji and Mitsuru from Persona 3- Good characters with problems that I can actually give a damn about that develop greatly alongside the rest of the cast and that can stand on their own without the need to constantly bend over the MC (this is how you do characterization, Persona 4).
Jade and Guy from Tales of the Abyss - The former is a classy intelligent guy with a reputation that is well deserved in terms of power that can be sarcastically hilarious when he wants to, picking fun at other party members when he sees the opportunity. The other is just a great friend in general and is one of the few that stick with the MC after what he did.
Etna from Disgaea - Funny and a qt.

HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic will forever have a place in my heart.
The Companion Cube from Portal.
Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins, though all the companions in that game is fantastic.
Hoji from Shadow Warrior
Triss from the Witcher games.
Joe, Mafia 2

It's hard to say though cause I like going solo in the games I play. Then again I play a lot of games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout where the AI of the followers are so terrible that bringing them with you becomes a chore.

Most of my favourites companions are from Bioware's games. They really are good at this.

Garrus Vakarian and Mordin Solus from Mass effect, best bro Alistair from DAO, Mazzy Fentan and Aerie from Baldur's gate 2... And those games have some of the best written companions ever. Aerie may be disliked by a lot for being whinny, but that character writing is just off the chart. If you're patient with her, take the time to listen to her, to guide her, and to have Jaheira shut up too... She has incredible development and depth.

By companions, are we including playable characters that aren't the protagonist, like Tifa or Selphie from FF 7 and 8? Or are we just going non-playable characters, like Lydia from Skyrim or Reddas from FF12?

If it's the former, I'd have to with Balthier from FF12 (considering that Ashe is the protagonist). Being one of my favorite characters in gaming helps a lot, I suppose. If it's the latter, hmm... does Shadowmere count? I don't usually have AI controlled companions if I can help it.

Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite.

A companion that stays out of your way, you don't have to baby all the time, AND she helps you out by finding much needed health, ammo, and money? Sign me the fuck up.

I adored Trip in Enslaved because I really enjoyed the story and how her relationship with Monkey grew throughout the entire game and, for whatever dumb reason, the fact that I could carry her really made me grow attached to her and her safety, which is a big part of the story.

And pretty much everyone from Persona 3 and 4, too.

God himself a.k.a. Mordin Solus

He's simply the greatest, he's a quirky, highly intelligent scientist who always wants to help the innocent and he doesn't shy away from any method in order to achieve that and he's overall absolutely fantastic.Bioware really hit the bullseye with him in character development.
