IKEA goes too far with new 'shocking' stuffed toy!

I always read the news in the morning, but I had no idea that I would stumble across something as disturbing as this when I browsed through the headlines. Of course this story would happen to come from our friendly neighbor, Sweden. I've taken the liberty to translate the article, so that you can be aware of this atrocity too.

It was on Sunday that Gun-Hilde Karlsson from Karlsborg and her granddaughter Anna (9) visited IKEA in Jönköping in Sweden. When they stopped at the stuffed animals section, they were both shocked. On the shelf sat the cuddly toy "Lufsig," (a toy wolf) along with characters from the classic fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood - but the wolf had eaten the grandmother. On one wall were puppets of cats and dogs which you could put your hand inside, and Anna tried several of them. But on the edge was were that gruesome plushie sat. It was the wolf - with granny down its throat, and her legs sticking out of his belly.

"It was horrible. I couldn't believe it," said a clearly upset Karlsson.

They were both shocked, and even her nine-year-old granddaughter reacted to the toy.

"She thought it was disgusting, too."

Karlsson questions whether this is an appropriate toy for children, although the figures are from a classic fairy tale.

"I don't understand what they were thinking. Do they mean that children are supposed to buy something like that? I was simply a little shocked," she says and continues:

"It makes no matter whether a toy is depicting a fairy tale or not if children end up feeling frightened and have a nasty experience from it."

Karlsson and her granddaughter chose to leave IKEA after the incident. When she came home, she posted the picture of the stuffed toy on Facebook and Instagram, and points out that a lot of people have been agreeing with her.

IKEA itself commented on the plushie, and stated that the toy was part of a campaign.

"It's not our intention to scare anyone, and we have a large assortment of stuffed animals so there is plenty to choose from," says Emil Eriksson, press officer at IKEA.

"Lufsig is part of our stuffed toy campaign that focuses on the European narrative tradition. Our stuffed toys are brought forth to stimulate children's playing."

Now, I know that you're all dying to see what the plushie looks like, so here it is. (NSFW)

What do you guys think about this? Did IKEA go too far, or did the poor old grandma simply overreact a little? Do you think that complaining about petty things like this, and shielding children from even traditional folk tales, is excessive and something that should be avoided?

I'm interested in hearing your opinions on this matter. I personally thought that the stuffed toy was hilarious.

First they made us sick with their crappy meatballs, then they bored us to death with The Seventh Seal and now they're traumatising children with macabre plushies.
Sweden has clearly gone too far. I vote that we all get together and nuke them.

I didn't even know that IKEA sold toys, I though that they just sold furniture that was borderline impossible to put together.

I don't see any problem with it, when I was a kid the only problem I actually had with the original version of the story was when the lumberjack chopped the wolf open at the end because I though it was cruel and I've liked wolves my whole life, lol.

Seriously though I don't think too many people are going to have a problem with this, most of them will probably just find it funny, I do.

Though I remember when I was in elementary school my teacher hated this Nrsey rhyme called "The old lady that swallowed a fly" because she though it was gross and stupid. It was about some old lady that goes around eating various progressively larger animals and finally at the end of the story she dies after swallowing a horse.

Agreed, it is like cutting the animal open wasn't gory or cruel at all. The old lady is overreacting, it is just a toy.

It's not fucked up and it's not controversial. Her guardian needs to stop being a wuss, the kid probably didn't even give shit. It's the kind of hypersensitive parenting that has made our generation a bunch of crybabies. It's not "appropriate" for children? It's just a fucking toy, get over it lady.

I actually like the meatballs in their cafeteria; it's one of the best parts about visiting my local IKEA. Maybe it's just here that they're nice though, and they're shit everywhere else. Their quality isn't very consistent.

Yeah. I doubt the kid even gave a fuck, and only sided with her grandma because... it's her grandma. The most worrysome part about this is that children tend to take after their guardians and close ones, so if little Anna learns that this is the kind of response you should have towards these things, she'll grow up to become a hypersensitive wuss herself. I bet she'd find the toy humorous if she saw it with her friends or with somebody who wasn't a total sissy.

You can see worse things on tv. I really don't think it's a big deal, and it looks funny. Poor wolf tho, it's good they didn't make his intestines falling out, that'd be creepy :3

Seems pretty epic to me. No more scary of offensive than reading the tale its based on to kids and im pretty sure every kid was fine after hearing it.

Ive had a 10 year old friend of my relative try to talk to me about "tits" before and says he's allowed babe magazines and watches porn online. So as far as parenting goes we have far bigger issues than parents buying their kids that toy.
