I see this circlewank of Canada on the internet almost all the time, especially on the MAL forums. I just don't get it, why is Canada so special?

When I think about Canada, all I think is the US but without the entertainment, technology, culture and tolerable climates.

We have the exact same culture (for the most part) as you, plus we view the same entertainment. Honestly if you were foreign to both countries you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The circlewank started because of all the stereotypes about canadians being nicer and whatnot.

Idk, has something to do with people from Canada being polite or well-mannered.

Also free health care.

Save for Québec. The influence of Québec is the reason why Canada has historically leaned more to the left than the USA.

What's special about us? Besides the things already mentioned... Multiculturalism is built into our national identity—if not completely, than at least more so than in most other countries. We have a very small population, relative to our massive amount of land. We're a relatively young country (only 147 years old).

I can honestly say I do not think I have ever seen Canadians, and Americans arguing about nationality online before. It's mostly British and Americans.

It seems to me that, usually, Canada is brought up in relation to the US. I don't often see people start by talking about Canada.

There's no "Multiculturalism" in my area of Canada. Everyone is Caucasian, and only speaks English where I live.

There's more to Canada than Ontario.

I have wondered about this.

How does it sustain its own identity being next to USA?
Would Canada get blowback for something America said or does and could it withstand the blowback?

They are taking back their land, why do you think we have so many Mexicans immigrating here? They want to Mexicanize the U.S. and merge American and Mexico into one nation called the United States of Amerexico.

Canada's multiculturalism goes far beyond Ontario. Have you ever heard of the three territories? Or Canada's aboriginal people (a fair amount of whom live in almost every province) in general? Considering the amount of national attention aboriginal affairs and aboriginal history (rightly) get, it's clear that they have a stake in the Canadian identity. I also think that Canada—because of our relative youth—is more receptive to having new races join our identity. We're seeing this now with Asian people, imo. That point is conjecture, though.

More importantly, multiculturalism refers not to race but to ethnicity. Quebecois/Quebeckers have a significant stake in the Canadian identity, even though they are considered culturally distinct from the rest of Canada. Some white east coasters, whose ancestors have been in Canada since the beginning, are still somewhat attached to their English, Scottish, and Irish roots. It feels as if they are both Canadians and immigrants.

A lot of countries are home to a lot of different races and ethnicities, but usually "real" or "true" citizens are narrowly conceived*. It's much more difficult to conceive of a "true" Canadian. That's my point. That's why I think multiculturalism is built into our national identity. I could just be blowing smoke, but I think I'm onto something, lol.

*I would argue, for example, that the American identity is essentially white and Christian.

There are people where I live that legally qualify as "First Nations"(Myself included,) but you wouldn't say it by looking at us, as we're all pale as ghosts, and we are still Caucasian.

So I guess we are still a little more multicultural than the US, although there are no Asians where I live.

More multicultural than the USA? Maybe more than Mexico and its neighbors but I think out of North America, it would go (if its in a list) USA, Canada then so on. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

I see Canada as the peaceful, somewhat traditional, cousin thats sorta weird persona, to the USA. They can be awesome and what not but its forever in the shadow of its neighbor. They're the immigrants America wants in comparison to---the other ones >.>
