Have you noticed that many new inductees to Japanese media feel an (inexplicable) aversion to mecha-related work?

Why is this?

I too once avoided the genre because of a misconception that all mecha was shallow Sunday-morning TV fare.
Some irrational instinct told me that the only substance to mecha was the technical execution of transformations designed to awe children.

Whether or not mecha are involved, I learned, there is no reason to assume that the series in question is lacking proper story writing and development. This too goes with older works, and other stylistic choices that turn many viewers away for superficial reasons.
The age or style of a work says nothing about the quality of that work, so why might others feel an aversion?
What is your experience?

I'm not a fan of action in general. Watching big robots hit big robots with big guns is not that entertaining to me.

Can't say I dislike the genre as a whole though.

Used to love it as a kid I remember Gundam Wing being my favourite cartoon. Now they just look silly they need to shake up the looks of the machines in my opinion they look the same since the 80s. They need to switch it up.

Back about 12 years ago when I was in high school, I hated mecha because all I had seen at that point was Gundam Wing(which was mediocre,) and Gundam Seed(which was cancer.)

And then, around 2008, everything changed when I saw Robotech for the first time, and then I knew that there were great mecha Anime out there.

I don't. Some of the first anime shows I saw were Transformers, Macross and Gundam Wing and I loved the hell out of them. I've so far seen 182 titles that qualify as mecha.

The best mecha work is out there right now. If you want something character driven, and don't believe a series such as Gundam can deliver it, check out 08th MS Team.

Seconding fst's notion. Start with one of the OVAs. Doesn't matter too much which you pick, but I'd recommend Stardust Memory, War in the Pocket, or 08th MS Team.

If you want to get to know the characters before choosing which to watch, try playing one of the Dynasty Warriors Gundam titles. As odd as it may sound, they are a great introduction into the multiverse, and a good hub point from which you can branch out and seek more information about characters whose personalities you may come to like.

They cover most of the major events in the main UC timeline (MSG, Z, ZZ, etc.), but other than that there are actually few spoilers, and you won't feel cheated if you pick up any of the series after playing.

It seems boring in general, especially the idea of mecha fights, space, political themes. Never liked it, ever since I was a kid.

I'm recently in the mood to give it a try, starting with Sidonia's manga.

I find mecha fights kinda boring most of the time even in the mecha series I love. I'm a big Gundam fan, but not for the mecha aspect. I prefer pretty much any other kind of battle shounen fights (swords, magic, superpowers, etc...) to mecha fights since there is little variety (they have beam attacks, rockets and possibly some kind of melee weapon and that's basically it) and the technology of the mecha can just make the fights even more boring when one model is clearly superior to the others. Plus most mecha fights are in space and don't even have any cool backgrounds.

Now it's not like I can't enjoy flashy fights in top-budget mecha like Unicorn or the extreme OTT fights of TTGL, but most mecha aren't like that.

My favorite kind of mecha is when there is a lot of focus on realism. And I also really like mecha in ground warfare, where you have actual landscapes, and gravity and (usually) more realism. Patlabor, 8th MS Team, Flag. Stuff like that is awesome.

For all those reasons I used to avoid mecha, but at the end of the day if the characters, worldbuilding and story is good mecha doesn't take away from my enjoyment, but it also rarely ever adds to it (unless it's in the realistic sense I mentioned). I adapted a neutral stance towards it and don't avoid series because of the mecha genre anymore (well, I still do avoid most modern mecha in recent seasons since most of them sound lame).
I probably regret this post by now.

Even in CG the mecha fights were the least interesting part of it to me. Lots of the 'new superior model pwns them all' trope. The only mecha fights in CG I remember were the ones heavily involving a Geass.

What's there to explain when you don't find something appealing? It's a matter of taste, that's about as much as there is to it. Personally, I don't have any rational reasoning as to why I'm avoiding the genre (and have never claimed to, either), it's simply because I don't feel like it would be an enjoyable experience for me.

Whilst we're at it, where does the assumption that people who avoid the genre think it doesn't have a proper story come from, anyway? That's a bit of a generalization, don't you think?

These are the only 'mech' series I enjoy though, despite not liking TTGL that much I guess.

I find that mech shows tend to be focused on the mechs... which are kinda dull to be honest. The important distinction for me is that a show with a mech in it does not make it a mech show. CG is a series with mechs in it - as is TTGL and Suisei no Gargantia - they are not mech shows though.

Honestly I'd say that the Akito the Exile OVA's are far more akin to an actual mech series than the original ever was - which is also why it's worse than the original series.

When it comes down to it mech series are just glorified action series - which I similarly don't really tend to enjoy. They also have the added annoyance of a bunch of tedious mech explanations and battles which all look a bit samey. It often seems to be gun porn with a plot there to justify it...so that's why I've never gotten into the genre.

I'm sure they're not all like that - but I can only judge on what I've seen and it hasn't endeared me to the genre.

i personally think the mecha i have watched so far has always been a bit to the ridiculous side (not that i've watched that many because the topic itself isn't very intriguing to me). it may just be that i watched the wrong series but oftentimes i think mecha series try way hard to be different and bring in 'new elements' that the plot seriously suffers from it. and a lot of the protagonists of mecha aren't very likable to me personally.

so i do have a bit of an aversion towards the genre but i'd be willing to change my opinion if somebody were to recommend me a great one.

I'm not sure why, but one day I just felt that I didn't want to watch mecha anymore. The last one I watched was probably gurren lagan and I enjoyed it very much, but I knew I didn't want to watch anymore.

I could say how repetitive mecha is as a genre, but genres are kind of repetitive by nature, so that's not my real problem.... I'm just not interest in mecha's anime to the point where I wont watch an anime if I know there are mecha in it, even if the mecha hardly show up. Hell even when legend of korra brought in a mecha I was quite upset.
