I think she really is taking this game a bit far against Nine now..

Really? Only now it's too far?...

That was a fitting ending for Five, she only wanted to beat Nine, not kill him, which I guess she did, ultimately she shared his goals.

I think every episode of this show has been really gripping and makes me feel this is the anime of the season for me, with perhaps Akame Ga Kill following behind.

The false flag operations, the shadowy government dealings, creating weaponized personnel, a nuclear weapons programs; all these I saw beforehand but I didn't think five would have gone out that way. A twist, but I'm not sure I agree with its direction. The biggest flaw is that they tried to throw in character building when they should have stuck with the plot.

so then what was the point of 5? did she really just want to beat 9 but when she realized she couldn't she decided to commit suicide (since she was going to die anyway)?

Before her life ended, Five only wanted to beat Nine as he was the only one who she could never win against in the past.

As for the suicide, I believe the events were positive for Five as she was successful in delaying/cancelling the press conference, leading to the bomb being released. Viewing it from that standpoint, she has technically thwarted Nine's goal(of having the press conference in the first place) and thus won over him. With her supposed victory, her purpose in life is complete, as someone earlier said that Nine (and the extension of beating him) was her raison d'etre. She knows she was going to die soon because of the experimental drug, and she's already killed the FBI guy or severely injured him. When all of this settles, she has no where else to go unless she wishes to face the consequences of her actions by the hands of the American government.

Also on a completely random note, why I believe she decided to suicide in that fashion but has no logical backing is that Five has clearly demonstrated her love for going over the top (airport chess anyone?) and to go out with a "bang" seems to fit in with her nature/how she's been portrayed so far in the show.

i understand what you're saying. however, are we sure that 9 actually wanted to hold the press conference in the first place? what if 9 knew all along that 5 was going to go after him and decided to lure her out by using the press conference as an excuse? in the police truck 9 thinks "she's here, huh?" and he doesn't seem surprised. that kind of makes it seem like 9 planned the whole thing to occur which would mean that he actually beat 5. however, what i'm saying doesn't actually matter if 5 believes that she was able to beat 9 by preventing 9 from holding the press conference (as you've stated)

To answer your question, I certainly cannot give a for sure answer if Nine wanted to hold the press conference. To me, it seemed like a cornered decision as his partner in crime just recently betrayed the location of the bomb last episode. However that then calls into question as to why Nine wanted to lure Five out? After he has lured her out, to what extent does handing himself over to the police advance his goals/ambition? It could then be hypothetical in thinking that Nine planned it out that the scuffle with Five would lead him to give the police the slip during transportation, although that is a really risky gamble to take.

As for his reaction, I believe that Nine was able to predict that Five would chase after him, and thus why Nine set up one of his demands were to be the Japanese police (refusing to allow the American government) to escort him to the press conference, and for the many decoys (or is that a normal thing in society with multiple decoy trucks, I honestly do not know). With that theory, Nine is seen to be able to calculate that Five would interfere with the plan, and took some measures to counteract that. Although I do have to agree on the possibility of the thought that even though in the end, Five couldn't beat Nine (in terms of his bigger scale plan).

I'd say this was a really great penultimate episode for the show. That ending. I can't wait to see what's going to come out of all of this.

Overall, I enjoyed Five's character and think she really added a little something to the show and how she went, well, it was to be expected since she wanted to beat Nine and took things into her own hands (I'll miss her Engrish). Kinda shocked about Nine turning himself in like that but... I felt sure that there was definitely a plan up his sleeve.

Lisa and Twelve. Mhmm... lol I felt like they were just kind've derping around an amusement park while all this serious stuff was going on and only Lisa seemed to outwardly show how bad she felt (but hey you got saved, so there's that). Twelve seems really bent out of shape about betraying Nine though so I get that. Thought it was interesting how he just came zooming into the picture right towards the end.

Someone commented that maybe Lisa will do something but, okay folks, we're at like endgame here so I wouldn't expect any epiphanies. I've liked Lisa and wanted to see where her character was going to go, but can't say I'm not a little disappointed at how things turned out with her development.

Anyways! Super excited for next week's finale and can't wait to see how things will turn out. Definitely a favorite of this season.

Ok, NOW Five is a stupid character. What did she accomplish? Why did she even do all of the shit she's been doing? She switched characters real fast. It doesn't feel right.

Here are my thoughts on the matter.

As implied with 9 and 12's methodology in instilling terror, they don't actually want to harm people. Rather, they just want to get their message out and use their acts of terror to draw attention to themselves.

With that said, we know that from one of the previous episodes that 5 absolutely loves games. Given her conversation with 9, we know that she pretty much never won against him. Her interference ruined 9 and 12's relationship, and prompted the detonation of the atomic bomb; something 9 and 12 don't actually want. Since she has in that sense, beaten 9 and 12, she decides to suicide (as her health is extremely poor) because she has concluded that the atomic will detonate and that 9 will follow her in death.

EDIT: I just watched their conversation once more and realized that she basically commands 9 to live for her sake. Whelp, I guess that just throws all of my thoughts out the window.

When I saw the gasoline comming out of the car, I knew someone would die, but I didn't expect five to suicide.

That was a gigantic cliffhanger, perfect for an ending. Now I want to know if it is going to explode or if they are going to deactivate the bomb somehow.

I expected that from 5, she has that vibe from the start. But it was unexpected to the plot, her character become so shallow. I don't understand what game she played even though i do understand at the same time. She want to prove she can beat 9, then so what??? i can't comprehend her, she close to being 1 dimensional character for me.

12 still into the game, isn't??? All in all it was a good episode, the plot progressed so much.

Your signature, it's too fucking cute. Off topic but I can't help it

I'm thinking on how the character development went and can't help but think no matter how I spin it, I'd be disappointed.

We don't see them change much at all and we won't see it really.

And if they were suppose to be the same and have others give details on the backgrounds, they haven't done enough.

I'd be fine with the latter since they'd give enough to be passable but nothing worth of a eight. Like a 6.5-8 Nothing spectacular but enough. But not enough to dictate what Five's job and deal was. Yeah, if I backtrack I might get it but still.

That ending video was badass. ''Sayonara, Japan.''

Twelve and Lisa make a cute couple. A cute terrorist failing at cooking couple.

For those confused about Five's goals: She basically knew she was dying as a result of the experiments during her childhood and wanted to beat Nine at least once before she died. This show is kind of marred by lackluster animation. However, that certainly did not make this episode bad, it was pretty great. I honestly never really liked Five until this point, for some reason. Her death scene was well done, and the entire episode was well directed. Cant wait to see how this resolves. (More Lisa please?)

A good penultimate episode, we see the death of 5 and a lot of driving action. Clearly the video at the end is actually 12 with a black wig, because 9 never smiles. Maybe that means that the atomic bomb wasn't a failsafe after all? I know they didn't want to actually kill anyone, they just wanted to bring the Japanese government's plots to light. Fascinated to see how the final episode plays out, I just hope we don't get a non-ending like Tokyo Ghoul did.

They're not normal humans, they were experimented on to be stronger, smarter, tougher. They're supposed to be superhumans. Note that everyone else in the car was unconscious or dead, 9 was the only one who was still able to be on his feet.

Honestly, if this show didn't have such great art and an amazing staff working on it then I doubt it would be this highly rated and popular. I'll admit it's thrilling to watch and explores some really interesting concepts, but it also just kind of...doesn't make sense half the time. Five's motives are flimsy and unclear at best, and Twelve and Nine's intentions aren't really that clear either. Lisa is still useless. The characters don't really change throughout the series, and the only one who kind of develops is Nine.

This anime is honestly enjoyable to watch, but doesn't make much sense after you think about it a little.

Some thoughts about 5's motivations: Initially it started out with a desire to "win" against 9, then it evolved into an obsessive and twisted love because that's what happens when you think about someone every single day. Holding him at gunpoint, with definitely nowhere to run, gave her her victory. But because she loves him (the kiss), she wants him to live on.

Also speculating that 5, 9 and 12's bodies were harmed during the experiment, as they keep saying they have "no time left", and 5's rare disease that the doctors have never seen before lend credence to this thoery.

The highlight of this episode for me was Shibazaki speaking to the old politician Mamiya. If anyone's familiar with East Asian international relations, Mamiya's plan to create "an independent Japan" and rewriting the constitution is very relevant right now, what with the Shinzo Abe administration taking a much more aggressive stance on Japanese foreign policy, visiting almost 50 countries in just 20 months, and generally loosening the Article 9 restrictions on the constitution, which is why Japan is in the process of selling next-gen combat submarines to Australia.

BTW, that unmasking moment at the end was one of the most dramatic unmasks I've seen in a long time, beaten only by Lelouch's unmasking at the end of Code Geass season 1 or Corvo Attano taking off the mask for the High Regent in Dishonored.

So ya, the FBI can just, kill cops now I guess... OK...

All of that build up! Ended with... Five kissing Nine before killing herself... uh huh... I don't care because Five was never given a personality besides evil bitch...

So Nine is actually gonna activate the atomic bomb on the city? The hell!? Why was he so hell bent on not killing people before then!?

This anime is just.. so confusing despite being so simple and cliche...

Also, the talk between Shibazaki and Mamiya amounted to ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Nothing was learned, nothing happened in the meeting, it was just Mamiya telling Shibazaki that no matter how loud he yelled, no one would hear him. The thing is... we ALREADY KNOW THAT BECAUSE MAMIYA HAD A PERSON KILLED JUST FOR KNOWING THE TRUTH! Oh, sorry, he did say that the reason they did it was so they could rebuild Japan or whatever... Okay? I mean... duh... why the hell else would you do it...? Just for shits and giggles?

There really isn't any tension building at all this episode too, it was all fairly predictable... The moment the cop pointed his gun at Five I knew she was going to shoot him. The moment I saw gas leaking out of the car I knew Five was going to die by it. Whenever it wasn't predictable, it was just sort of boring... Even the car chase went by too fast and didn't have a whole lot happen that it wasn't all that exciting...

I hope the series can at least end in a satisfactory way... but this episode really disappointed me... It was just boring...

The scenes with Twelve were okay, showing his regret for what he had done and his unwillingness to face the consequences. It was resolved fairly fast though with Lisa just saying, "Nah you're okay." and I guess that was all Twelve needed to go rush off to save Nine. Even though apparently he was in no danger to begin with because Five didn't even seem to want to kill him.

Someone loosely translated the next episode preview synopsis:
混乱し、人のいなくなった東京でナイン、ツエルブ、そしてリサは空を見上げる。
Nine, Twelve and Risa look up at the sky of the distraught and abandoned Tokyo.

I don't know if that implies Nine, Twelve, and Risa are just as distraught and just standing there looking up at the sky, but you're right. I can't imagine Nine letting the bomb go off; he must have a back-up plan.

I take it his original goal was to use the atomic bomb as a threat so that he can hold the conference in which he can spill everything about the RPA, the Athena Plan, and the secret atomic bomb. He did, however, expect Five to intercept, because he muttered "she's here, huh" while he was in the car on the way to the conference. So Nine definitely must have set a back-up plan to counteract Five's interception.

My theory is that the purpose of the automated message was purposefully to cause panic and thus evacuate the citizens. 2 hours, barring traffic, should be enough time to get somewhere safe... hopefully. So my theory suggests that Nine did send up a bomb up in the sky, but not the atomic bomb. Nine also purposefully sent the bomb up to the sky so that no one can immediately retrieve it and find out if it really is the atomic bomb or not. In the time given, Nine will administer his back-up plan to either 1) defuse the bomb within 2 hours or 2) distract everyone with the bomb in the sky and secure the atomic bomb for himself and run away. Evacuating the public gives him the safety of either knowing that not a lot will get hurt even if the bomb goes off or knowing he won't be caught easily with everyone distracted.

This was the risk Nine had to take in trying to reveal everything, because he was running out of time and options. It would make sense storywise and make for an epic finale if Nine sent the atomic bomb up in the air, but obviously he's naive in thinking that people will be able to evacuate in only two hours, so I'm not sure the atomic bomb is in the sky.

Nonetheless, Shibazaki will probably help, because even if he hates Sphinx, he despises atomic bombs even more because of his bad childhood memories. We'll see if Lisa comes to the rescue as well.

I quite like 5, but a lot of her reasoning hasn't been explained. I hope that they will go into it a bit more in the next episode, so that we can have a better sense of closure and reasoning for her actions.

But that said, her death was pretty epic. I mean shooting gasoline and standing in the flames until you die is a pretty awesome way to go out. I wish we had two more episodes. One to explain 5 more, and then the conclusion episode, but I'm still loving the series so far.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it will end!

Finally a anime which MC are not immune to explosions, bullets and collisions.
Can't wait for the last episode, everything will be explained.
Now I don't know if I should hate Five or not, and Twelve like Lisa I think.
