@ Jao Zangetsu,

And Psycho Pass. And Gargantia. And Blassreiter (his involvement in both).

Haven't seen Phantom, But 1/5 does not a good writer/character creator make.

And due to the praise he's gotten off of PMMM and F/Z, two mediocre shows save for their music (which they share) and animation (like Ufotable, hate SHAFT) has made it so he doesn't mess with the formula.

But dude's formula is in need of messing with.

Over-reliance on shock-value will only get you so far.

To me Psycho Pass is the best thing that guy came up with. He managed to fuck that up too with bland characters, though.

Yeah I find it pretty funny that most people seem to think the last 5-10 minutes of the show were the most exciting when for me it was the most predictable and obvious part of any of it based on the trailer and the person writing. I mean it's just such an obvious generate an "epic" moment scene, and I guess MAL loves it's "epic" moments, but like it just felt so heavy handed. It's not like it didn't fit or anything, but the shock value intent behind it is just so played out by Urobuchi that it really didn't have any impact to me. Plus you've got the textbook "epic" blaring Sawano music playing over it reminding me of things like Guilty Crown and that one song from Kill la Kill they never stopped playing like multiple times and episode after what seemed like it was going to be a return to greatness.

It's like the show felt it had to blow it's load and shock and amaze people as quickly as possible and I guess it's one way to get peoples attention, but how it follows up on it is going to tell the real story about this show. Can it make me care about the cast or the ongoing sequence of events or is it just going to be another Guilty Crown kind of clusterfuck of Versians massacring Earth civilians and "despair and suffering" for the next 23 episodes because I can see that getting really old really fast.

And yeah it's funny how Gen Urobuchi always seems to start with every possible advantage for his shows. Everything he writes for gets a ton of budget and focus and is planned to be this huge hit by producers as well as the most popular music artists and composers (notice I didn't say best). He doesn't always get the best director though (IMO Shinbo is a hack and can only harm whatever it is he's involved with) but yeah it'd be nice to see if he can ever elevate a show that doesn't have everything already set up for him to be able to just shock people and hold their attention. The few times it doesn't feel like he's been afforded every advantage and enhancement in staff and budget we've gotten shows like Suisei no Gargantia and Blassreiter.

Obviously that's not happening here though, this show is as big budget blockbuster as they come this season at least initially. A-1 kind of has a habit of having their animation quality absolutely tank after the first couple episodes of a show and while hopefully the split cour can help with that I'm still not expecting the remaining episodes to look anywhere near as flashy as this one did unless they really are just equating surpassing Gundam with creating as much carnage and "kill em' all" atmosphere as possible. I mean Aniplex could certainly try to rely on shock value and over the top characters again like they did with Guilty Crown and Valvrave, but it'd be nice to see a little change of pace and them actually managing to capture a little bit of that Gundam gravitas which is about so much more than just the juxtaposition of cutely designed characters (they're really trying to go for the whole use a designer that has primarily worked on slice of life shows for max"suffering" route like Madoka again which is kind of lame to be honest) dying horribly.

On a meta level I'm definitely a little put off as a result of the really obnoxious and braggy ad campaign the show had going into it as well as it being another pretty blatant collection of what Aniplex thinks is a catch all super team of staffers. Almost as much time has been spent talking about the staff involved in discussion on this show and promotion of it as has been about the actual show itself if not more and I think that was pretty deliberate. I just would like to hope that this shows carves out a place for itself in the history of mecha anime rather than just being remembered as yet another collection of big names that delivered a dubious show like Brain Powered or Guilty Crown.

Like I said in another thread too there's more to making a memorable mecha show like many Gundam series than just shocking twists, carnage and mass death events. That's the sort of thing I expect out of what I consider the weaker entries in the franchise like Gundam Seed Destiny, not the ones that put it on the map to me as my favorite sci-fi space opera franchise in any medium. That's really it as far as the show goes itself, I just hope there's more to it than the Aniplex formula of playing blaring Sawano music over "epic scenes" cause Guilty Crown and Attack on Titan already did that quite adequately.

Psycho Pass is the only centered with "philosophy", which didn't make Akane less emotional, also, their emotions defined their destiny here.

1/5 ? seriously ? do you even did your research ?
and his VNs he did the story all alone, that's completely different in the anime medium.

Seeing how much time they spent on showing the princess and her interaction with Slaine, and that it was commented on that she didn't wave or anything, it's likely that the (actual?) princess survived. Why did whoever was actually in the car even go outside? The car was basically undamaged from what i've seen. Turned over, yes, but not deformed or having holes. It wasn't on fire or sinking or anything, either. Staying inside would have been the safest option.

Also, the terrorists said something like "all those years laying in wait finally pay off". From what we've seen of the relationship between Earth and Mars, i don't think Earth had any idea that the princess was coming, until recently. It also seems to be a personal project of the princess, so most of Mars probably had no idea until recently. Therefore it's likely that they are closely related to some of the lords waiting in orbit. Maybe the one who called Cruhteo shortly before.

Maybe the intentionally made it "predictable" to throw people off later..though i don't think so.

Anyways, Inaho + rocket scene = best moment this episode. You coud literally see the question marks on the others faces.

Man the trailer for this anime was a giant piece of shit. I wasn't expecting this anime to be that good but man was I wrong. Only things I didn't like was the main character being emotionally retarded, and the first set of mechs they showed looked weird. Also I was thinking killing the princess was planned by the martians but I hope I'm wrong. Definitely a 5/5

Lol the trailer was bad for real.
The animation was crazy I looked back and thought it was some some of movie or OVA.

Really cause the trailer pretty much told me everything I could expect out of this episode or at the very least the 2nd half of the episode. Maybe I'm just so familiar with mecha anime and the Aniplex approach at this time that I could predict the second half pretty much down to the order of events that would transpire based off of quick shots from a 30 second trailer but man if there has ever been a trailer that pretty much spoils the entire first episode it was that one. About the only thing I didn't expect was just how on the nose some things would be like the missile directly hitting the princess and the whole kids wishing for peace on an incoming death drill castle (probably the silliest thing in the intro episode) they think is a shooting star. I almost kind of wished I hadn't watched it now and just gone in blind cause it probably would have helped the impact a little, but then the Aniplex factor still probably would have made it obvious anyway so.....yeah.....

Anyway I don't think there's anything from the trailer that wasn't shown in the first episode so for me the next episodes are going to be where it gets really interesting or not.

I'm not feeling it from this one. The development of the story was awkward, the lore doesn't make sense given the timeframe, and the characters are bland. The first half has a large amount of poorly delivered exposition which could have been spread in a more interesting way throughout the series, and the second half, while being entertaining from a visual standpoint, lacks resonance with me due to the haphazard placing and fairly unbelievable scenario (why is the princess' escort so light?) It could improve but I don't think this setup episode will lead into a good series. I guess it's up to Zankyou no Terror to save this season.

I loved this first episode! They did a good job of establishing the plot even if the majority of the characters haven't gotten to do much. I like the design of Slaine, and Asseylum quite a bit. Asseylum's in particular is very clean looking.

I hope the rest of the show can live up to this episode, because it seems to be heading in the right direction!

Just forget all that fluffy business talk, because that's all it is, meaningless hype talk, and watch the show as a blank slate with nothing clouding your judgement going into it. Giving a shit about whatever the douchebags in suits said about Gundam can only act as a hindrance to your enjoyment of the show. I think the same goes for the music composer, too. It might just be more epic sounding Attack on Titan music, but this isn't Attack on Titan (which is a good thing).

Good start, the ost was great and I think the story has the potential to be quite interesting. Even the characters, the main thing I was worried about, don't seem too bad, so yeah, looking forward to the next episode.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Good premiere. Definitely on my watch list. My only problem was how ridiculously dumb the UE seemed. What kind of peace treaty leaves giant weapons of death hovering over major cities? Plus the major battle took place 15 years ago? Nobody seems to care about the martians and what their capable of. Idgi, but the characters and action sequences seems entertaining enough to ignore that small stuff for now. Hope a good explanation comes soon.

It kinda looked watchable from the cover, even though i already knew that A1-picture is going to srew it all up. And i was right. Well A1-Picture is a company that is only interested in selling shit to as many fanboys as possible, thats why they never have any original or interesting characters, there way of starting the show (as you see here) is: presenting cute characters having a typical boring conversation rather than setting the real tone for the story ( i dont know but i guess the tone for an anime with a giant robot on the cover would be action, but i could be wrong in this case-.-). And their way of following the story is with highschool kids or character with highschool kids attitude fighting against unorganised, stupid clichee bad guys who mostly got introduced through some kind of beeing a total dick because of no reason other than being a dick. The story of the shows are also mostly not able to explain themselves, no the characters have to do that for them, as conviniently and unfitting as possible.

I already heared before that the robots are going to be cgi, but i thought the cgi would be better than this. the missile assassination was a nice idea though(because it actually progresses the story) but the reaction from the MC was utterly retarded which just shows how idiotic the characterwriters for this shit are. So in conclusion, another maybe even watchable story idea ruined by the inability to make a decent show out of it from none other than the worst production studio itself A1-Pictures

That scene was honestly the best thing in the whole episode. Everything was built around it, the whole episode had that theme of the hostility/political conflict between earthlings and martians, and that scene kinda added a nice touch to it. It was pretty well-done imo.

That was a pretty decent episode. 1st half was kinda a slow start but the 2nd half lived up to my expectations.

This is how I feel back then when the 1st Gundam UC episode came out. Maybe because of mecha + Sawano's vibe in this series. OSTs are powerful indeed.

I don't think the princess is actually dead. Three reasons to that : she's listed as a main (hah! such a weak argument), she was probably a decoy since the count seemed to disagree with the other guy who called and sensed a danger for her and finally, we never saw her face. That's such a classic in the ''oh, you though he/she was dead! Ha!''. Pretty sure too that it was a conspiracy from the martian, the whole attack. Humans have done that kind of ''sacrifice'' a lot of time in the past...

Anyway, it was a great start. I was a bit perplex during the whole episode, having difficulties to see where this was heading for, but that nuclear explosion... Damn, sent chill down my spine...

The episode was great as a beginning. The princess is alive as she is listed as MC, Gen has more suffering for her in his pocket . All other characters are interesting specially the emotionless MC , hope that we will get an equivalent reason for his personality with a back story.

This is created by Gen so i think this with have bloodshed, violence etc.
but on mal the rating is listed as PG 13. So will this have the traditional Urobuchi elements or this will end up like gargantia ? Anybody knows?

Good episode, a solid one. I really enjoyed the OST and the characters seem interesting. I'm definitely going to continue watching this.

The world lived in harmony until the Martians attacked only the trained soldiers maters of mechanical machines could save the world.

Well that was a good first episode to prove how we as the human race will time and time again screw our selves over.

Great episode!!!

Watched this for Urobutcher and Hiroyuki Sawano. Indeed, I got what I want: Character death and godly music. The last track gave me goosebumps. Damn!

But I'm sure the princess is alive. She's supposed to have some powers right? (Or did I hear that wrong?)

Anyhow, that was a good first episode.

Butcher isnt writing this.

Well, series opened off with an orbital kinetic bombardment and the death of the female main. Good start!

Seems pretty interesting, though i felt the backstory was really rushed at the beginning of the episode.

HOLY SHIT THE HYPE TRAIN IS GOING FULL STEAM AHEAD!! CHOO CHOO

The first half of this episode was pretty slow but god damn it picked up at the end. Blowing up New Orleans has never looked so epic.

I highly doubt the princess is dead though. You know what they say: they ain't dead till you see the body. I don't think Mars would be naive or stupid enough to actually be happy sending her out with 3 cars that the missiles could destroy so easily.
