Another good episode. I'm really fine with the pacing, it just feels appropriate. I'm a huge fan of the double perspective, so I really like how the story takes us back and forth between Lena's point of view and world, as well as the point of view of the squadron.

The glimpse of Shin's backstory was really painful. The fact that 86' fallen soldiers don't even get graves shows how much dehumanized they are, and what I think of as burdening Shin even more. It's like even if he wanted to die, he can't because he needs to carry them all to their final destination. I doubt that'll be the only dark part of his backstory considering how he reacted to Lena's mentioning his brother and the smile that was drawn on his face at the end.

I really liked the scene where Theo's words kept playing in Lena's head and how she ran away as though she's going to escape them.

I wonder if Theo's commander is by chance Lena's father or someone related to Lena.

Always looking forward to more.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Hmmm can't agree with this part, expecting to develop all of their squad characters in only 4 episodes... interesting.

Theo is a part of that squad and literally bullying the main heroin, he is not "just there" imo

well firstly from literally the exact same post:

though it's still early stages so hopefully more to come

I know it's only 4 eps in, I'm not expecting each character to be 6D or something. I'm simply evaluating my opinion on them based on these first 4 eps (which have been very character focused)

And I should also clarify, by "just there" I don't mean in terms of backstory/role in the present, I mean more of their personality/character. So far none of the cast really stand out, most just seem to be there to fulfil an archetype

Like literally you have:

ara ara onee-san
cuckold
bratty kid
big bro
clumsy love interest
monotonus badass

and the rest which haven't been properly introduced yet.

It's the same thing with MHA. Even with some 90+ eps of that series there still are some characters in the class that are just "there" (like the invisible girl for instance).

Again, I know it's only 4 eps, but no one really seems all that interesting apart from maybe Shin with that smile at the end imo

00:00 Now we see Theo's emotional takedown of Lena from his side.

00:56 Great cinematography showing the look of coldness in the Spearhead Squadron's eyes.

02:48 A-1 don't hold back. They have given us an evolving opening animation.

03:56 Notice that the scene briefly focuses on Anju's back...

08:45 A brief flashback to Václav and Lena's flight is inserted after her conversation with Annette. Hopefully, more will be shown in episode 5.

12:18 Brilliant contrast between Lena hearing the repetitive propaganda-filled news report and remembering Theo's words to her following Kaie's death.

13:21 When Lena asks Shin for the Spearhead Squadron's names, learning why he's the Undertaker, she is at the cemetery where the names of Alba soldiers are recorded (including Václav Milizé). A special ED this episode; SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Lacoใ€ŽHands Up to the Skyใ€

22:55 "Shin’s eyes widened, ever so slightly."

Look at where the neck of Shin's shadow is cast...

Ya know I'm not getting the politic involved in San Magnolia and I'm not getting as to why there were only whites that lived there as in white as white with with hair, to which there were no white haired , Asian, white haired Chinese, white haired Afros and white haired Arabs.....

All the regular hired humans were all outside, whiy were they even fighting for them whites when they can fight for Legion to get rid of them white and take their world back, I'm just not getting it.

Also who were these so called "Gladian empire" anywayz Alien, half-bred humans, monsters with high IQ or terminator like machines?????

another amazing episode, i really love undertaker and my heart literally cried for theo for how he felt, i still don't really like lena even though she's really trying her best but she's also very privileged
Also why the score so low it's literally a goddamn great show

Daiya looked like he wanted to swap places with Theo so bad when the girls jumped him. Speaking of him they edited his face where Kaie was in the opening so I guess that means he's next on the chopping block.

A good episode. Once again the best scenes happen after the end credits. Pleased to see Lena's not the only Alba to not be hostile/indifferent to the 86, makes the setting far more believable. Kudos to Shin for genuinely doing his best to connect her with the team, though I guess he was doing it as much for Theo's sake as for others. The last scene was very nice, as it feels like just the tip of the iceberg for a connection truly being created between all of them.

Vaclav straight up took his kid to a battlefleld, lmao, ok dude. I appreciate that the anime doesn't shy away from his failings along with his qualities. Annette is probably how the average person would act in the present situation. No major ire or hostility towards the oppressed but not a shred of empathy either. Just choosing to go by life while pretending it has nothing to do with you, since it's out of your control anyway. Easiest way to stay sane. Though not the most pretty.

Hope we get more from Shin's PoV in the future.

One thing thats really stood out to me with this adaptation has been the direction. The directors are bringing their A game every time. I'm glad they're giving Volume 1 some room to breathe, since it was a really dense book. I was afraid they would try to rush it and squeeze it into 4 episodes.

One thing that I'm really enjoying about the adaptation is the focus on the introspective parts over the action. The mech battles were good, but not the strongest parts of the novels.

Also, a nice detail in the anime is that Lena's father is listed as the last casualty on the war monument

I was really curious about Kaie's death in this episode, but seems they will leave it for another day for now. I do love that they showed really nicely what kind of impact this had on the 85 but especially Lena. It caused Lena to understand the 86 more and this episode has been some wonderful character development for Lena.

That cut from Lena putting her hand behind her head to the ED was smooth as fuck. Surprised me in a really good way.

Interesting reveal at the end, so Lena has known Shinei's brother. The way he smiled when Lena said it worries me a little.

I see people saying most of this was anime-only content, I'm not a LN reader but yeah this episode was just disappointing, the pacing was way off. Could of got this done in a couple of minutes dunno why they took 24 minutes.

I am anime only and I don't think it was a bad episode. Flashing out relationships this early will set up some actual emotional investment at least. Plus apart from that, it's good progress for Lena so she will actually start doing things instead of just feeling bad for her unit.

being an anime only as well, the story, or at least the direction the anime is taking, is to be a very detailed story with human-like characters and not a simple action flick anime. Yes it's slow, but it isn't bad that it's slow. It's taking the necessary time to properly flush out story. The very basis of this anime/story is built upon people not being treated as humans and the ambitions of one privledged individual who want to fight the status quo and humanise those who have been discarded. Therefore, it is very important they build up characters with as much human element as possible or else it completely misses its point and make the racial thing a gimmick rather than a solid driving point. There's much more i could say but i don't want to bore you. From the looks of it, it'll be a deeply emotional and philosophical anime. If you aren't into that type of stuff and the pacing that's needed for it then all I can say is, buckle up lad for it'll be a long ride.

This is so good man, I'm glad Theo called Lena out on her behavior, however unintentional. Plus, Raiden saying they will never consider her equal as long as she's their handler and lives in the safety of the walls is very much true. However, she really wanted to change and regretted her behavior, and that's great on her part. The scene where she feels suffocated while hearing the San Magnolia announcement in contrast to the words of Theo, showing the very different realities they live in was very impactful in particular.

I am liking this show more and more with every episode and can't wait to see what happens next. I am interested to see more about Shin's brother too, seems like there's a tragic and traumatic incident surrounding him in Shin's mind.

The episodes keep getting better and better. I’m glad they acknowledged how ignorant Lena was being by pursuing her ideals without addressing the actual problems at hand. It is admirable that she recognizes her shortcomings and tries to address it by resetting her relationship with the 86. The direction was great this episode too.

Its an adaptation, they will use the show not tell so dont expect they will tell anything in your face and don't expect all of the scenes will be animated at once. Pacing is important and anime should consider it

Honestly this is good adaptation. But I think it's too much potential to waste in all 4 episode, the pace is slow and steady which is good but the build up of heavy material is mediocre at best. Shame, it's could be a prodigy of next code geass or death note but the potential is being wasted to build a character bond. Don't get me wrong, it's still good nonetheless in fact from this season it's the best, but personally it's hurt to see those potential couldn't be deliver to us as good as it may could.

The episode was kind of redundant and made of so many apologies of Lena.
Marinate1016 said:
My only complaint with the episode was them not showing Kaie’s death on screen. I think she deserved more than that. Especially since the anime made her a really big part of the first few eps.
The anime team might not have much time and money to do that. Half joking aside, since Lena only knows 86s only through the limited amount of the radio communications (like audiences of this case), it is almost impossible to feel the life/death of 86s as reality. If the show is intended to be an entertainment, some visuals would be needed.

Another good episode. I'm glad that they didn't become friends with her over night just because she asked for their names. Their relationship feels pretty natural and believable so far.

I don't find the pacing an issue at all, all this is necessary world building. Slow pacing isn't a problem when done right. It's an issue when I feel the show is dragging, which isn't the case here imo.

Wow... this episode was something else... Lena can’t get over the deaths of the comrades she’s recently been working with and can’t wrap her head around it. But that’s the harsh reality of it, meanwhile Shinhei has been doing this for over 5 years and has lost 561 of his comrades, I’m surprised he hasn’t quit and STILL has the motivation to reach the final destination... that’s dedication right there man. Lena asking all their names in 86 really sealed the deal for me because she wants to treat everyone the same because they’re also humans at the end of the day. This is a really good anime. Hopefully it gets a season 2 because I feel like 11 episodes won’t cut it for me and I want to know more and how this will play out.

Edit: Just realized there’s gonna be a season 2 so I’m happy for that. Can’t wait for more ๐Ÿ™‚

Theoto is such an obnoxious brat but at least his outburst was what Lena needed to become more assertive as well as more aware of her surroundings.

Overall, probably the best episode so far. Mostly because of how the final third of it was handled.
Lena's friend still annoys me to no end tho. Probably because of her "I don't know shit about your position as Handler but I will keep giving you "advices" about how you should do your job" attitude.

86 EP- 4 DISCUSSION ( ANIME ONLY )

Nice to see development between the Spearhead Squadron and Lena.
I liked how they made the clear distinction between them and Lena and clearly said they are not "equal" and they cant be.
Theo regretted what he said to Lena ๐Ÿคญ so cute!! He really is loved by the girls. The gurls jumped on him and took off bus jacket and Anju sewed back the button. Anju is so beautiful, i love her. Daiya was blushing when Anju jumped on Theo maybe he was imagining himself in Theo's place.
The bonding between the Spearhead Squadron members is strong.
Shin is a nice person. At first i thought he was another edgy guy , but no. He is such a sweetheart . He shoulders the weight of his dead comrade. He keeps their names carved on their juggernaut part with him and remembers each n every one of them. He wants to go with them together to his final destination. ๐Ÿ˜ข That is sad. His voice is so pleasant and he's so well mannered. He was also so nice to Lena while talking. He is so cute.
Kurena's "hmph" was so cute. She looked like a Pokemon ๐Ÿคฃ so cute seriously.
I honestly love this anime and everything about it. I hope their friendship cintinues to develop.
We also get to know that Shin had a brother , Shourei Nouzen.
Lena seems ti know well about him. Maybe we'll see them talking about him in the next episode.
I wont rant on it too much. I enjoyed this episode , dats it.

It's because the anime original scenes serves as a replacement for some of the narration which takes place in the light novels. It's not going into fanfic territory.

Pretty good episode handling the fallout from Kaie's death. 86 squad pretty much just go on as nothing had happened. That's war for you. Bit of an awkward call like "I'm sorry please tell me your names" but it's nice they were able to push past that in a single episode.

As an anime viewer only, I like how the show keeps getting better and better with characterization and build up.

Personally, I disagree entirely with Lena's uncle point of view about ideals. Ideals might be unreachable, but it doesn't mean people shouldn't struggle to narrow the gap. Especially because idealizations are not just about high politics, but affect our own life too, after all one can not live without ideals about himself.

Well... lots of death flags in this episode. I hope this doesn't end up the new Akame ga Kill. And obviously, I hope Lena and Shin meet each other eventually... that would be a great end scene, a cliffhanger for an next season (I shipp then since day one).

Sorry for any mispealling. I am not a native speaker.

It was so odd seeing Undertaker Smile at the end. That was like. Something too genuine to occur. Almost out of place on his face. It doesn't even look good on his face i could say.

Speaking of genuine ; the entire thing about death and the weight a name holds....that's not only applicable to the anime.

Irl too i reckon, if you don't know someone's name you'd feel indifferent if they passed away.
It's a never ending cycle and it's good to see the way it's portrayed as an obstacle for the Young Major to overcome.

Episode pog :D

I get the feeling they'll change her picture on that paper at the end of the series to something nice. They keep going back to shots of those pictures lined up on the wall so I get the feeling it'll mean something later on.

I really hope the MC at some point actually leaves the safe haven and goes to where the rest of the gang is and fights alongside them. It would be cute seeing her interact with them all and getting along with the other girls like they were in the waterfall area.
