Am I an average hardcore casual otaku??Personally, I split anime fans into 4 categories: Casual: Someone that watches a few eps a day. May or may not own some merchandise. Average: Someone that watches about 15 eps per day which is about 5 hours, the average time people spend watching TV in the US. May or may not own some merchandise. Hardcore: Someone that watches more than 20 eps per day. Likely owns merchandise. Otaku: Someone that watches more than 20 eps per day, buys tons of anime merchandise, goes to conventions/concerts, and maybe even cosplays. This is the type of fan that keeps the industry alive. Going by the above, I'd fall under average. How the hell can you watch 15 episode per day? I watch about 4, but only at my days off. Sometimes it's 6 if I don't get caught up in social situations or other stuff. |

I will tend to compare people's time to their number of completed anime to roughly work out how long of anime they tend to watch (my average is 2:16 hours per anime, so very short). Using the other data MAL and the user provide you can find out a fair bit about the person as long as their list is honest.zombie_pegasus said: Vhailor said: Since I've cared enough to watch nearly 270 anime, and anime being my primary source of entertainment for almost 2 years now (I barely watch anything else), I guess I'm a reasonably hardcore anime fan. Hardcore. I used to think of myself as a casual anime fan, but then about a month or so ago, I was holding a party at my apartment with a bunch of my friends from college and a few of them were looking through my anime collection. Even though they knew about a lot of the popular anime, they were asking me about some of the "lesser known" titles in my collection, one of which was Clannad...in which my reaction was, "OMFG, you guys haven't seen Clannad?! THAT'S MY FUCKING FAVORITE!" |

Oh, what does the number reflect then? I understand your point but i think. What you meant to say is that, completed titles does'nt reflect time spent on watching anime. But as you've pointed out, using other data, like days, does. At the other hand, it still doesn't reflect how "hardcore" someone is. And to be honest, people should stop viewing their list as their e'peen. I, for example, don't care how many anime others have watched. The sole purpose of my own list is, to track what i've watched, and what other materials are there for given titles. Sure, it is funny when someone claims to be hardcore, with 10 title on their list. But that doesn't change anything. |

Speaking purely from an anime standpoint, without including manga and figures, CDs, etc., I would divide the fandom into 4 classifications: Newbie - "Yeah I've seen/watched anime like Naruto, One Piece and/or Bleach, I even watched some Yu-gi-oh too. I'm vaguely aware that there are other not so popular titles out there, but I can only name 5-10 titles that I've watched." Casual - "Yeah I watch anime once in a while, I am aware of the lesser known series like Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist and Madoka I can name more than 10 series I've watched over the years and I follow maybe 1-2 new series every season." Average - "Yeah I know what KyoAni and J.C. Staff means. I watch like 5-15 new series every season. I update my MAL list frequently and can tell you what series and which character a person is cosplaying as if one shows me a random cosplay picture 50-90% of the time." Hardcore - "Yuuh I'm a full blown otaku. There's nothing I don't know about any of my 100+ favorite series and can tell you things about the 600+ others I've watched. I could recite all of Tori no Uta, enumerate from memory of the major members of Maguno Biban's crew, enumerate all the surnames of the color families in Saiunkoku Monogatari and names of the countries in Juuni Kokui from memory, watched Bartender and Mouryou no Hako in its entirety, twice, and could tell you which anime currently has the most episodes ever. I'm definitely a casual fan. I wasn't able to talk with people about what I like because they would think I was immature or whatever for liking anime. However, once I met other people who were fans, I still couldn't talk with them because I didn't know enough about the thing I liked. The way I see it, that means hardcore fans need to know everything or else they're not a "true" fan, and casuals just like what they like and try to find people who won't judge them. |

I'm a casual, since 90% of the time anime isn't even in my mind. I watch at best 1-2 short series a year, (not even invested in the long-lasting series). I'm hardcore in that I watch a lot "about" anime, (more so than actually watching anime), also a lot of the anime I watch now isn't considered "mainstream", (because of not investing in long shows). |
