That was… weird. Very slow, lots of monologue, cgi wasn’t very good. Episode also abruptly ends in a weird way. Not saying it’s bad or doesn’t have potential but it’s not a great first impression.

Soundtrack sounds good and some of the art style is good setting aside ugliness of CGI skeletons. Only thing making this interesting so far is they seem to be showing actual power growth starting from being weak instead of everything being instant.

Was kind of funny seeing him try to talk.

I never said it was exactly the same just based on that form and made more monstrous.

Well, the whole premise is like Solo leveling but the scenario and world building is way better/ more interesting than Solo Leveling thus far lolz
No wimpy low self esteem mc suddenly turns edgy op, no typical team mistreating you cuz you're weak, no edgy mc at brink of death so he awaken some bs and becomes op. This show avoid a lot of those generic boring tropes.
Instead we get a very Grimgar vibe anime which is quite a breath of fresh air, with decent production quality / art / music.

But ofc its' not Mahwa/ KR so people gonna rate this down to 7.xx or even lower lolz.

Seems like every Skeleton MC manga I've read years ago are all slowly becoming animes lol. First Overlord, then Skeleton Knight in Another World and now Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha. Just need Skeleton Soldier Couldn't Protect The Dungeon now to complete the whole shebang.

On the episode itself though, I felt it was okay. A little slow but gives a nice backstory that didn't felt rushed and made me care for the guy a little. I forgot what the whole story was about beyond the beginning though so watching with some hope its good.

Nice premise but not that unique.
I have been reading a certain webtoon manga for a while now, titled 'Undead King'.
Has a slightly different premise but it is also about a low-ranking adventurer who died in the dungeon but was resurrected as undead, and started as a lowly skeleton.

In that webmanga, the MC also works his way to achieve an evolution stage where he can look closer to a human - working from skeleton to zombie/ghoul, and so far right now he is in a doppelganger level so he can take on the form of a real human in the expense of constant MP consumption. Even so, being an undead the MC's attributes are now OP because after all he is no longer human.

I guess this will follow a similar track for this story.

One does not challenge a dragon unless one is either stupid or knows something the dragon doesn't. Though being defleshed is better than being dead. Its cool that the mc also needs to get used to a new combat style now that he's nothing but bones now and see him adapt to his new form. Though not being able to sleep or eat sure takes the fun out of life. That scene where he become a ghoul sure was fun. But even as a ghoul he's going to need a good disguise if he wants to get into town. Overall a solid opening ep that featured a good balance of lore expansion and action. I especially liked how the series takes great pains to ensure that we are following whats happening as well. The OST was surprisingly grand though.

@Ventus_S I completely agree, even out of curiosity I checked some anime lists of those who write that this is bad or not interesting to see how did they rate Solo Leveling and guess what? This is not interesting but Solo leveling after first ep. is already 9😂😂

@Ventus_S

A lot of that is what made me interested in the series in the first place so I agree. It's also getting raked in a bunch of other sites like ANN, RPG.net, and Tropes because, "oh there was no hook and too much monologue" or some shit. Someone did agree on the take that there's zero patience or chill to let a show cook and see what comes of it any more and a pathological NEED for there to be instant and ever increasing drama, angst, stakes, tension and whatnot.

I dunno about MAL, but a lot of korean manhwa get HUGE ratings on scan sites. I can't recall the reasons why though, but someone did run the analytics about it and Solo Leveling is the biggest Manhwa of all time. The One Piece of the genre if you will.

An exposition heavy dungeon exploring fantasy where the MC gets turned into an undead creature via dragon dinner, with the ability to evolve and get stronger as he farms other monsters. It's a premise which I unabashedly enjoy if it's interesting enough. Decent start, even if the "show, don't tell" crowd are crying about the execution.

@GakutoDeathGlare

Agreed. I'm up to date with the entire series manga and LN so I can answer just about any question. I will mention that the reason why there's a lot more exposition about the guild, monsters, and dungeons that a lot of critics bash as "common knowledge", is because they actually serve major story and lore purposes rather than just window dressing for the series.

This is turning out to be a better adaptation than Solo Leveling, despite both novels having a similar prologue. And it did that by just playing it safe and following the novel. It says more about Solo Leveling anime than this, to be honest.

Yes and Yes
God of High School was highly rated too until the last few episodes completely flop due to way too much plot skip and insane pacing.

Typically most Manhwa series start with 8.xx until the adaptation gone to shit.

Episode was pretty good. Im glad they took some time having him grind, it really made it hit that it took effort to evolve. Of course, he evolved within a few days... 😅
Also glad they made him liked in the adventurer's guild even tho he was weak. Usually anime like this always make everyone else in the guild against the mc. even though the protagonist is usually likable.

As a long-time reader of the light novel this first episode is about what I expected - a lot of exposition. For those who don't know, the LN is relatively slow-paced and heavy on the worldbuilding and explanation of various things, including Rentt's thought processes. Frankly. I didn't think Unwanted Undead Adventurer was particularly well-suited to being animated because people tend to expect different things from anime than they do from light novels. One of those being more instant action/satisfaction/engagement. Either way, this pace is very much my kind of thing - the light novel is one of my favorite reads.

I am hyped to see how this anime is going to progress. Lots of people will probably find it to be very boring, but for some others it will scratch a particular itch. The kind of itch that hasn't been scratched since something like, say, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. Somewhat weaker main character(s) and a lot of room for slow character and power growth.

Exactly!

I loved Grimgar so I could already tell that this would be similar. The second I heard the ending theme for this anime, it just confirmed what I had already known. Hope it continues in a similar fashion and hopefully the ratings go up.

I quite liked this start. MC is very... basic? But at the same time he is not another kid and seems pretty cool. Using his narration through whole episode worked very well for storytelling imo. It seems to be on slower side too, which I appreciate. Not sure about the story itself: the idea of him working to get some kind of body is a nice idea, but I think we will need more than that.
Depending on where the story goes, this might turn out to be pretty good anime.

I'm pretty much watching every anime this season, and this was one of the few I decided to skip out on; didn't really vibe with having a skeleton main character. But heard some good things from these first few episodes, and look at that, he upgrades to a ghoul in the very first one. And besides that, it seems to be a nice slow anime; the ED accentuates that at least. Glad I picked it up; his could be really good.

I started watching this on a whim (I watch nearly all the fantasy shows this season) but this is actually pretty good!

It reminds me of Jobless Reincarnation, or Grimgar. Everything just feels "proper" and down to earth, as far as you can say that about a fantasy show where you turn into a skeleton.

Loved the dragon design, it reminds me off angels from evangelion.

Rewatching this underrated Anime again because the English Dub came out.

I glad they made good choices for the English Voice Acting.

But what struck me the most about this first episode, was the music soundtrack which compliments the scenes.

The anime soundtrack has diversity of music, Classical / Middle-Ages / Celtic (etc), in a well written score.

At the 18 Minute mark, the song "Humble Efforts" quietly plays with these beautiful horns in a Classical Beethoven style, as he speaks about the limits he had as a human adventurer, but then this fades into the song "Courageous Stance" with this Classical Marching sequence, as he speaks about his goals to achieve the highest rank.

I looked up the Original Soundtrack, it quite impressive.

I hope this anime get more recognition and has a second season, hopefully with this same music team.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Just re-watched this in an all-the-way-through binge-watch in an afternoon and, yep, it still stands up as one of the best fantasy anime in a long time.

Characters you can relate to, a wonderful protagonist, a fun plot, a true feelgood show, an absolutely kickass soundtrack (which is on Spotify, btw) and a gorgeous ending theme song.

Will go down for me as one of my favorite ever fantasy anime, with a re-watch likely at least once a year from now on.

Just bought all 13 volumes of the light novel series as well (J-Novel Club), as I want to see where the story goes next.
