Old fashioned protagonists, like:
Ryo Saeba (City Hunter)
Vash (Trigun)
Kintaro (Golden Boy)
Onizuka (GTO)

The trait d'union is probably:
Characters with peaks of geniality and a strong sense of justice, usually concealed by some kind of fatal flaw, who reveals themselves badass when the situation requires it, and that are also comic reliefs.

If you're talking cookie cutter type characters, there's only really one type I'd like to see more of, and that is the deadpan slightly retarded girl with accidental potty-mouth syndrome.

Without Ana, OniAi would be completely worthless instead of just a little worthless.

Badass characters that don't necessarily try to show their true strength, and at first seem devoid of emotion due to their depressing past, however, they are very clever and DO actually care for everyone.

I will automatically like a character more if they have an eyepatch. It can be a medical one or a pirate one, I don't care, it's just always better with an eyepatch.

Personality wise, I like tsunderes and overly bombastic/eccentric characters that have a large presence. I also tend to like really flawed/bratty characters cause those seem to provide the best development.

If I have to choose a personality that's the most fun to develop, it's the obsessed/neurotic type. The best examples are from cinema - Ed Wood and Max Cohen (pi). Characters with a goal they're obsessed with, the highs and lows this leads them to - it can be a fun way to explore various worldviews.

Yandere vampire loli
Seductive gothic loli
Blonde twintail loli
Bigbusted airhead loli
Redhead femdom loli

Well, jokes aside I like overpowered male main characters and strong-willed female leading characters. It's accurately this:

As for main characters, I like strong or brave, independent characters, especially when it comes to female characters (e.g. Yona from Akatsuki no Yona; Koto from Kyousou Giga; Hiyori from Noragami; Morgiana from Magi; Erza from Fairy Tail).

For male characters I think I like your typical shounen main the most, like the ones who are usually carefree and funny, but when it comes to their friends or morals they can go totally berserk (e.g. Luffy from One Piece; Natsu from Fairy Tail)

Just not all those useless "too cutesy", crybaby-type girls or guys (e.g. Nai from Karneval, Ciel from Black Butler; Armin from Attack on Titan) or characters that are just too nice and moe to stand (e.g. Latifa from Amagi Brilliant Park, Chitanda from Hyouka).

I'll jump too quick in conclusions if I say the opponents-bestiary because, most of time, I find them more interestings, have a better charac-design, I have more empathy-pity for them or I find them less annoying (even for ones we see them for minutes) than most of protagonists....
(That usually happens in Fantasy genre like Dai No Daiboken or God Eater...)

But anyway, I'll say the Gentle Giant, the Mighty Glacier, the Beastman, the Barbarian Hero at first...
After, It depens of many things...

I don't have a problem with tsunderes. I think they can be quite funny.

It seems like the bad ass character with a rough past who seems devoid of emotion is pretty popular. There's just something about those characters that are endearing and make you want to root for them

For both male and female characters, usually the badass (Galatea, Izumi Curtis, Teresa) ones.

For males: plus points if they're clever (Edogawa Conan, Hattori Heiji, Kougami Shinya), a good cook (Aragaki Shinjiro & Kagami Taiga), red-headed (Kagami Taiga & Hisoka), funny, has a slightly dark skin (Heiji & Aomine), and has a deep, brotherly relationship with one of the characters (Natsume & Tanuma, Conan & Heiji, Ed & Al).

For females: plus points if they have quite a large chest (Valmet), intelligent (Naoto), adorable [i](Aigis & Celty), and a well-developed character (Aigis).

Males: Badass, alpha-male with a heart, someone who is always trying to FSU, but has a plan, care-free

Females: Only has a heart for one, does her best to make her lover happy (like help create his harem), smart, strong, KAWAII.

I'd say this; they don't need to be a main character, just a well developed character who feels like a human.

Strong and brave and independent characters (both good and bad) should go away. They don't create conflict, add to it or develop - being strong just solves it.

It works in action films but for something that takes a few hours out of life, I demand a little more.

My favorite characters are the Beverly Hillbilly type out of place characters, mostly those who come to the "human" world and try to adjust to life, often times too well. Those characters can be quite funny, like Squid Girl, for instance.

The well-written ones. I know, I know, a rare species in this day and age but I'm not giving up hope.

On a more serious note, I enjoy seeing characters that represent a touch of realism. Be it their reactions, their habits, their way of doing things, as long as it represent that one feeling of realism, I'm already more open towards them and develop an interest for their situation and backstory.
