Not the real Yuki Nagato, so I don't care she's disappeared or not. Dropped
I'm too weird to live but much too rare to die.

What was the point of this?

It's been a while, but that's not the Nagato I remember. I didn't like or dislike her character before, but in this one I find her to be very annoying.

Honestly, it was pretty awful. I hate to drop it, but the one or two glimpses of Haruhi are not going to be able to make up for it. (of course her "bodyguard" was with her)

That's because it's a spin off in an alternative universe based on an "official" doujin. This is not supposed to be a new Haruhi show, but a romcom with Nagato.

Is it OK that I haven't seen/read anything in the Haruhi universe? I just watched episode one and then looked up info and noticed that it is part of said universe. Should I pass on this and read/watch the previous media or is it OK to continue from here?

If you like this so far, why not? Doing it that way might be an interesting thought experiment. This series depicts an alternate universe that is in many ways unlike he original and stands a bit off to the side from the previous series but it is nevertheless an adaptation of a storyline which came as the originals series of novels, manga and anime were all well underway. Would you start watching any other series after episode 50 without checking the earlier episodes first? The narrative in the original isn't presented entirely in chronological order and there are alternative timelines in there as well so it would not be an identical situation to, for example, reading only books 5 and 6 of a series with 15 volumes but there are still a lot of references to the original material in this series that you'll miss but perhaps you can go the other way around - if you do that, however, you owe it to yourself and the creators of the universe to go see the original series almost immediately after concluding this one - when this is still fresh in your mind. While watching the rest of this you'll have to pay close attention to things you won't know are there. Does that sound like fun? Whatever you do I'd recommend finishing with the Haruhi movie.

Edit to add:
As you've perhaps noticed in these threads, there are quite a lot of negative reactions to this Nagato Yuki series from people who watched the original Haruhi seasons and the Haruhi film first - although there are a lot of people who don't dislike it as well your approach might actually work better...
The part affectionately called Endless eight of the original series wasn't universally liked either, after all...

One more edit:
If you are ever tempted to drop this because you start disliking it for whatever reason - don't automatically dismiss the earlier works because of it either without at least taking a peek at those earlier works. Though I like this Nagato Yuki series as well, I personally think it pales - especially in comparison to the Haruhi disappearance movie - which I probably wouldn't have enjoyed as much without seeing what came before it first.
Not sure if that answers your question but it was fun to imagine your options. Thanks for posting it.

I'll definitely try it out if edit one is the case. and I'm not the type to drop anime, I'd feel bad that I'm abandoning something i started XD That goes for series as well so I'll try this out and maybe make a post about it at the end of the series (that's assume i dont fall behind due to school or work.) I had some perplexity at the beginning and even after seeing this first episode I still have, but I want to wait and see what happens in this TV series. The work of Satelight is not as bad as I imagined, but I have yet to assimilate this new character design given to the characters. The narrative moe spurted from every pore, I wonder if riucirà to improve in the future. Plot that I still can not judge. Overall I liked this beginning of the series, although not so exceptional.

@Okanagan: Thanks for the info.

Waw talk about a bad start. I don't really consider myself a of the Haruhi franchise but, for the most part, the show had a very distinct charm to it that separated it from its counterparts.

BUT this shit is subpar in every category. It's like all the generic rom-com that Haruhi never was. The presentation is flat, the characters feel warped from previous installments, and it relies on overused comedic gags that are quite frankly very bland.

Wah...that bitch Haruhi isn't in the anime to be a huge bitch and make everything about her...

Wah....I don't like the fact it wasn't made from a studio that gave us 8 fucking episodes of the same shit!

Wah....I don't like this Yuki, she actually has a personality and isn't a robot...

Wah....I don't like change...

So I just watched the first episode. I was holding out JUUUUUUST in case they managed to bring back the old English cast since a little bit of nostalgia can make process of watching the show more pleasant and... well, Funimation actually did it the absolute madmen.

It's not Haruhi, but this is nice in its own way. The only gripe I really have is that Asakura is kind of annoying (But I think that's intentional given I distinctly remember Kyon saying she was 'kind of annoying' in the movie) and the gag with her and Tsuruya dragged on a little too long.

But for what it is, this is a delightful little show.

Watching this dubbed, and Crispin Freeman's voice does not Kyon's new, cutesy design. It's going to take some time to get used to this new art style.

Aside from that... pretty enjoyable episode, TBH. This'll lack the charm the Haruhi series had, but Kyon's monologues were still hilarious and the rest was pretty cool too.

I have always have enjoyed the english dub cast for the original Haruhi more than the jap audio and with these returning dub casters, I am enjoying this anime more than I should be. Brilliant job!

Although Michelle Ruff's Nagato is a bit hard to getting used to since Nagato has always been monotonic in my memory. Now she speaks a lot more faster, so it feels kind of off.

When I was reading the manga, I had the dub voices play in my head while I read like I usually do. It was really hard to imagine what Yuki would sound like, since at that point the only time we had this Yuki dubbed was the movie, where she hasn't opened up as much.

No, I'm literally laughing at the reactions....they're insanely stupid.

And many people are dropping the show/rating it based on the original which is even more retarded.

It's like rating Railgun bad because Touma isn't the main character.

For some fans (like myself) the slice-of-life aspects of TMoHS were 50% of the charm. If you love the characters, why WOULDN'T you want to see more of them?

Yep, just needed to hate on it. This crap was yet another betrayal of what seemed to be a promising series.
Checklist to erode expectations from fans of the original:
Repeat the same episode for a whole season? Check.
Create a boring spin-off with no science fiction or cool mysteries? Check.

The characters were great...because their wackiness lead to weirdness. That bit of weird was what made the whole slice of life aspect work for these characters. Without the weird, it's just boring, low stakes high school drama. There is better slice of life than this, if that's what you really like. And honestly, the timid Nagato of this spin off was just TOO different. Maybe she can grow on you, but she's too off-putting for me to want to give her a chance.
Also, Kyon was a great first person narrator. His perspective was funny and engaging. Things from this wishy washy, bland Nagato's perspective aren't nearly as funny. Things get a little funnier when Haruhi arrives… But then again she does the whole santa thing and also the same barging into the club room, which has already been done. Why should I am rewatching a series that was done well, done again in a different way that isn't as good?

I really like the idea of this, but I just can't get past the fact that KyoAni isn't animating this, as well as the fact that "normal Yuki" is completely different from what she was like in the movie. I was also kind of surprised to find that Yuki's seiyuu is still the same, considering the voice sounds way different. Yuki wasn't the only character that was too different for my taste though. Ryouko, while protective of Yuki, wasn't a Tsuruya clone. It's not a bad series like many have made it out to be, but it is very generic and just doesn't feel like a Haruhi spinoff. I hope it gets better.

Not sure if I will like it, this spin-off. It's just not the same without Haruhi. Also, Nagato as the main girl just doesn't go right for me, I liked her silence in the original series. Geez, how I longed for Kyon's monologues!

So this is just a "what if Yuki's plans did go through" world.

Felt like they changed Yuki's VA, probably just my imagination since she's talking way more than normal.
Kyon's appearance changed a bit.
Asakura still similar to the killer we know.

Yuki sure is talkative and way more direct, asking what Kyon thought of her belly.

Not sure what to think of this yet, the comedy parts seem forced and the fact that Yuki talks SO MUCH is weird to get used to.

I guess I'll see what this show leads up to.

Don´t like too much this first episode. All it´s about Nagato how a shy high school girl, with a tipical situations of school romance.

If someone ask me, if prefer the begining of Suzumiya or this, it´s clear, Suzumiya!!!!

Five minutes in and I'm not sure if I can do it. What the hell is with these character designs? That's supposed to be Kyon?! The overall aesthetic is just so lacking compared to Melancholy/Disappearance.

Maybe I should try this again sometime later. It's too jarring coming right off the parent installments, but if I take some time off to forget what they looked/felt like, I might be able to appreciate it more. Maybe.

Okay, honestly, it tooks a long time for me before reaching this. Because i am kinda scared with this spin-off to confused my current standing over Haruhi's greatness. I don't wanna disturbed my loveness to Haruhi. But alas, i can't lie. Yuki was so damn adorable with all of her top-notch shyness that became a legendary at her golden precious time. But this one, hell, she was more expressive, but kept her shyness at her best! Well, as expected for me from the first time remembering these series, the plot reused the movie part where everything started at the christmas disturbance. And Kyon, with Sugita voices tickling me so much with his dogeza at a washing machine scene, its relatable much to these kind of show: Dogeza de Tanondemita . Lol.

Okay, so the ultimate goals for these spin-off to let Yuki confessed to Kyon, i guess. I wonder if Kyon accepted her; as knewing their sweet scene at the end of the movie part where the dissapearance of Haruhi Tsuzumiya the happened, its made me high. Or i wonder if Yuki had a gut to do that! Ah, that scene, by knewing these series continuating those scene as a main line. If they both started a normally life without a damn superpowers, and supernaturals thingy, it would be calm like that. Well, these series spin-off first episode surprisingly good at my honest heart.

Let me continued then! For the real plot!
