It's just a lot of blood and gore, nothing else. And too be honest, it's not terribly graphic like Berserk. But it is more disturbing than your average anime.

Just a a lot of blood and gore, after monster penetrated her...
Well, that's one misleading way to word it lol (but you're not wrong either). A monster penetrated her hand with poison is a less misleading way of wording it ;)

Well I think the reactions to this episode show that the anime knows what it's doing. Just like the Abyss lulled Riko and Reg into a false sense of security and comfort before putting them through hell and implying worse things to come, the show lulled the audience into a false sense of security and comfort before putting us through hell and establishing a new level of tension. This show is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

I'm speechless...this episode was so dark and scary. I wasn't expecting it to get so real...
I thought that Riko died... So happy that bunny girl came up.
Abyss is a very scary place.

Btw i don't understand, so they went down and up again? Since Regu was complaining that they were climbing, wouldn't it be worse for them to go even lower?

Those experienced spelunkers didn't have a dandy robot with them. Most of where they went, decently skilled peoples could roll through without much effort, and the noobs died. It's below this point where the buff of having fancy robot boy reaches it's limit.

ps: there wouldn't be a story if she died early on because of a stupid mistake at the wrong place at the wrong time.

how could you not expect all of this happen when the anime talk about the dangers of the abyss, bleeding and creatures. It also showed pictures of whats to happen to the explorers in previous episodes

LMAO, so, guys, remember:
1- if you use "mate" you're from UK, therefore your words shouldn't be taken seriously.
2- to be taken seriously, you should use "m8" instead.
3- if someone tries to help you to drop an anime because he knows your stomach can't take it, he's automatically a child and should be blocked, even if you know you'll take his advice.

Btw, I'm not replying anyone for this part of the message, I really just laughed hard at it xDDD so, moving on...

HOLY, this was intense, I almost stopped looking at that part, that escalated quickly from a cute anime to a pretty dark one, but since the end of the episode, I can't stop wondering why Nanachi didn't show up *before* Riku's bone was broken by Regu, because if I understood it correctly, the "presence" Regu felt earlier was from Nanachi. Maybe it'll be explained in the next episode, I hope...

I know, but I wasn't sure how far the author would take it. There surely must be some limitations on how far the authors are allowed to take it.That was pretty graphic considering Riko is only a kid. I would expect that scene from a horror anime, but not here. I knew it would get rough, but not that gory. I was pleasantly surprised.

I mean, everyone was saying that this anime was darker than it appeared to be, but since they never showed us anything i never knew if it was really "dark" as everyone was saying. I don't know if you are getting what i am trying to say but... i can never expect everything, otherwise, it wouldn't be interesting. In this particular case, i knew that it couldn't be that easy to simply go down, but i never know what when and where.

Dammit, that was an amazing episode!!
Riko almost died and Reg was a totally overstrained!
We clearly got to see Regs weakness to something in dire situations.
Its a shame that he couldnt solve the situation by himself, but it was good that help arrived. Now this series has arrived to me completlely!

When Riko's hand was impaled by the spike, why didn't Reg pull it out from the bottom. The thicker side. He ripped it out from the top. Expanding the wound. As if she wasn't in enough pain already...

Rewatch the scene. When he removes it Riko's hand is turned palm down with the thicker part going up.
Although, the smaller spines are facing in the other direction, so he probably did cause more damage, but not for the reason you say. He really should've broken it off as close to her hand as possible and removed it going with the spines, but then again we've been shown that Reg isn't the quickest thinker, so he didn't think that far ahead because, well... monster.

Well, yeah not likely in this season. Though if we would get 2 more episodes the next arc would be really fucked up in a lot of way.

Still hope season 2 will happen in the future.

4th layer and its creepy as heck. They've been in some pretty bad situations up to this point but dang, that one was TERRIBLE. God dang watching this honestly hurt me, and had me feeing a bit queezy... thats an understatement, I couldn't look straight at the screen, my balance was off, was not fun for someone as squeamish as me. Just... damn... At least we got the bunny thing Nanachi who is apparently a Hollow...

Really, props to them as they did a wonderful job on making the scene disturbingly intense, especially the VA's impactful performance this episode, and I'm very impressed.

Not even surprised how this thread got a lot of replies now since the first discussion about this show lol

When you start a show because it looks like a great adventure but find out that everything is not, in fact, good in the hood. 10/10 Love that we got a brutal, realistic shift to shake us out of the whimsy. The Abyss is supposed to be dangerous and we finally get a reminder why.

Fucking hell I was not expecting that. The only reason I watched this show was because I was in the mood for some adventure fantasy - something like nausicaa of the valley of the wind or mushishi. When I started watching it I had 0 exposure to the fanbase so I did not know it was going to be dark. In any case I like it and although it was not what I wanted to watch I will keep watching the show.

I thought the scene with with ozen was a little fucked up when we found out that riko was a dead body however this was just hard to watch. The VAs did a great job voicing the girl's pain and I found myself looking away a few times.

Great episode was not quite expecting something dark when I started this but it is interesting and I can't wait to see the rest of the show. Will definitely pick up the manga after the anime ends.

I checked this episode out due many claiming how brutal or gory is...
Expect that wasnt the case at all, showing some blood doesnt make it a "torture porn" , very very weak, this wasnt gore at all. I guess most of watchers simple didnt saw much until now, and probably Made in Abssy the first time for them.

This reminds me to Narutaru, when people expected it to be Pokemon like child show, and then was shocked by a little blood and killing, giving the series the "most disturbing gore ever" all, claims, though at least that bad show had better "gore" than this

So I do predict future reviews with sensational writing:
"Dont let this show foul you, its not for kids, very mature and fucked up" Some poor fools probably will give credits to those reviews, will wait for nothing just like it was with Narutaru....

Very light in gore terms, viewers just not used to this, and expected nothing but kiddy tale, when something happens - basically few scream, and showing blood- suddenly becomes so hardcore and throw up including etc.

THIS ISNT DARK

This is is easily darker than the entire Akame ga kill anime. Actually, the moment Ozen "betrayed" them was darker than Akame ga Kill is.

It has more emotion than uh. I forgot the name of the magical girl anime swim swim is from. Though that one did have some of the most memorable kills.

It also has more emotion than Elfen Lied. Gratuitous gore on its own is just a waste of time.

It's very uncommon for me to see an anime with gore or anything close to it represented in an authentic way. It doesn't really matter if guts are spilling and bones are peaking out of people's limbs if it's happening for no reason and is full of lots of fake crying or stupidly unrealistic scenarios.

Maybe Another/Higurashi/Blood C/Corpse Party are actually deeper than just being 'mindless gratuitous gore' animes? I haven't seen them, since Elfen Lied/Akame are my first impressions for how fake or forced gore-themed animes are.

finally, took 10 episodes to get to one of the main characters. this better have a second season eventually :(

i absolutely loved the darker tones this episode, it shows that the abyss is truly a terrifying place and not just somewhere a couple of kids can explore with 0 problems.

that being said, i hope Riko loses her arm, because there need to be some sort of consequences. plus i mean Riko's arm was broken and then cut into (although i'm not sure how far Reg cut into the arm), it would definitely take some ~anime magic~ to save her arm
