2/10 (updated)

The anime staff really bottled the adaptation. The manga was solid for me, it visually impressed at the beginning but the fact that so much material was being cut from the sides while still maintaining a sluggish pace, and now adding the absolute mess that was the past 2 episodes (especially the ending portion), it really fucked itself really badly. I like the manga to give it a 7 now, so one of the potentially good anime of this year fell apart in the final stretch, leaving me completely dissatisfied.

I decreased the score even further now, after really thinking about it and realizing how absolutely nothing has weight now. The little moments that would've been better after realizing a good ending be accomplished was all thrown away, with characterization being utterly pointless as fuck. Good visuals and solid ending music choices are the only reason why it's still not below a 2, but I have changed it to a 2. Before it was 3.

Well....we got the Haru Rikuo ship in the end but things went a little bit too smooooth and fast...I like the ending, everyone is happy but the last step of the relationship development simply wasn't there. This could be a great ending for a 24 episodes (or 18 as it was written at the beginning) series.
All in all I still liked the series tbh. Of course the end was unstatisfying but the other aspects were great.

The romance never progressed, the characters were never developed, it just went in circles until the bullshit nonsense ending. Bury this shit and watch Welcome to the NHK! instead.

this is just so sad, because it feels really rushed. i saw that the manga has 110+ chapters and they compressed it into 12 episodes, how can this be more incomplete.

I'm actually Team Haru at first, but Shinako has a greater development than Haru, who only knows how to go to convenience store or wait at the front of Rikuo's house. But still, I like her character and most especially her voice actress.

I'll try to read the manga, Im feeling the story is great and the adaptation was just a disappointment.
I love K-On, and so should you.

My question is,
was there any sorts of development Between Haru and Rikuo? Sorry but I can't remember anything at all.
How did Rikuo realise that he had hurt Haru? Simple, when Shinako dropped him. The story became characters having multiple choice questions, where Shinako and Rikuo are in an advantage. And they took the advantage so lightly. They are trying to be realistic, but what kind of fiction is this?

Shinako stayed frustrating, lol I was expecting her to grow, rather she again gets bound with her past mistakes.

honestly, all the main characters became frustrating to watch. When I was expecting the characters to grow, they turned around to search for "Saved game" option.

Last two episodes were such a huge letdown. I can't imagine a show where popular best girl wins but stays frustrating to watch.

6/10, Doga Kobo did an excellent job. It's just the characters are averting and don’t give us any sorts of feelings for them.

This is the WORST ENDING they could have come up with...

Eww...

Rikuo tells Shinako to date Rou (AND SHE DOES.....) and no one calls her out on her BS.
And then Haru gets the pity second choice confession...

This is infuriating.

I'm already too mentally tired to ramble on any further about this horseshit of a series.

There was literally no significant development of anything to begin with, the character are so hollow due to lack of proper fleshing out. The pacing is allegedly fast, but yet it feels like nothing particularly eventful goes on. This last episode was just one disrespectful copout. There was no true weight to any of those scenes; it was just a rigged script that ended up really cringe-inducing. That's not even putting in consideration how the adaptation here cut out so much regarding other plot points and the side characters (the supporting cast were basically husks).

The manga wasn't really good to begin with, anyways, tbf.

Good fucking riddance of this show. Doga Kobo, don't ever have a series like this again.

0.000000.........0001/10. Not even the “sloppy beauty” of the animation quality could save it.

What the...
I was so enthusiastic about this anime with the first half.
This ending is a joke. I understand a TV show has time and money constraints, but I guess they wasted too much time with useless stuff. The Haru and Rikuo's relationship is nowhere near a decent level for the two of them to get together like this.
It's rushed, shallow and utterly disappointing.

There was, but definitely not enough for him to jump ship almost right after he broke up with Shinako. At best, the dude had mixed feelings towards Haru, at least romantically.

Him getting with Haru isn't a bad thing, and it was the ending of the manga, but considering that there are still 6 extra episodes, you'd think that they'd put that kind of development there.

y'know as a standalone ep this was actually pretty good, just felt way too rushed given the entirety of the rest of the series. I really wished it stuck to the original 18 or even just a couple more eps to really develop some of the relationships, cause it hardly felt like Uozomi liked Haru at all :P

but overall up until this last ep it was actually quite an interesting series ngl.

Shinako's indecisiveness/10

this show ended up being fine, but i didn't enjoy it that much compared to the other seasonals like wave, listen to me and kakushigoto. visually though, i love the aesthetics of this show.

i'm neutral on rikuo and haru getting together. i found haru to be super clingy in an unhealthy way, but it would be nice if she found happiness, which she did. congrats to the haru stans lol. at least rikuo and shinako called it off, it was going nowhere between those two. what i'm most glad is how rikuo grew from episode 1 to the last episode, dude has a nice coming of age story and the character i was most invested in.

too bad it's only 12 episode and not 18 episodes. this show could have used a couple of more episodes.

What can I say about Yesterday wo Utatte in general? Its really awful! The level of writing is at Domekano levels, full of coincidences (being sick, "I found you at an important moment") , character "development" (flashbacks of the "best" girl is not character development) and annoying characters. Annoying? Yes, almost all characters are insufferable in every sense. Shinako and Rikuo are supposed to be adults but they act like they're teenagers! Shinako's indecision makes the story going in circles for too long and for many episodes! Rikuo being shy and not telling Haru and Shinako about being in love with them or not until it was too late! Rou is a half decent character, while he can be a little irritating because of his attitude, at least acting like someone his age, and he has a story that is at least consistent. He's not fake unlike the other two. But about Haru? The most overrated character in this show, she's just a filler character put in this show! She was never well integrated into the story, she "falling" in love with Riku is forced and she's just a STALKER. Why does she get a free pass? If she wasn't a pretty girl or she was a man, everyone (inside and outside of the show) will think that she's creppy. I already lost count of how many times she waited for him everywhere.

Love triangles can work if the characters are decent but sadly with hardly anyone nice and generic characters (3 at least), Yesterday wo Utatte was destined to fail without even having started (more detailed information in every of my comments for each episode). Its not "realistic", its just teenage characters disguised as adults! Special mention to Rikuo's ex-girlfriend when she in just one episode showed more personality and charisma than the two main love interests. It is a shame that it has been wasted in this type of series. And the show being rushed doesn't help much either!

3/10 for the anime.

Also, im surprised that this show was popular in this season, knowing that it is very generic and quite forgettable.

Not sure if a 3/10, more like a 6/10 . But yes, this is the bad ending to somewhat good anime(in the season)

Shinako finally admitted it, she was not really in a romantic relationship but an awkward one. Finally, now that's out of the way...

Haru won after all. So happy for her. So sad we didn't get a chance to see Amamiya (from what the manga readers had said).

Looks like Shinako has to deal with Rou for now.

8/10

Truth be told, it was rushed. It should've been better if it was in 18 episodes. Looks like it became a trainwreck after all... 6/10

Jesus Christ, I didn't have any hopes it would end up well but they still managed to fuck things up in the end. I didn't feel a single thing from Haru and Rikuo's kiss, it was just so forced. I like how the pet crow was a motherfucking wingman at the end, though.

Great directing, great art and great animation. Shame it was all wasted on shit characters and shit drama.

All four of main characters were extremely frustrating, you couldn't root for any of them. Two adult idiots and two entitled and annoying teenagers. The MC is probably the least frustrating of the bunch I guess. Haru was annoying as hell. Imagine a high schooler obsessively stalking you non-stop and trying to pursue romance with you who are a working adult. Shinako was making me pluck my hairs out each time she was on screen because of how frustrating her character was. That Rou brat... I don't think I will waste words on him...

The show was also full of conveniences, including the one in this very episode. If not for MC's porch where characters would always conviniently meet like it was a scripted game event, there wouldn't be drama in this series at all.

The story mostly didn't progress, mostly going in circles or walking in place. Then it kinda decided to develop Shinako and Nouzumi pair in the second half and so I thought the series' end might at least make some sense with two adult friends from college getting together. But then the show disappointed me one last time.

In the end, freeloader girl was the best. MC should have ditched those three and gone for her really.

Great ending because Rikuo didn't end up with Shinako, LMAO.
Unfortunate that it was so rushed, but I didn't hate it, honestly. I don't agree with the "Why would Rikuo suddenly go for Haru" thing, because there have been implications for Rikuo feeling uncertain about the relationship with Shinako and him still thinking about Haru. Things did go a bit too fast, but I didn't feel like it was illogical or unreasonable. I wasn't even actively hoping for Haru and Rikuo to end up together, I just wanted them to be happy, but both of them looked like they were, so I'm satisfied. :^)
I don't like the idea of Shinako being in a relationship with Rou, but it wasn't necessarily confirmed I guess? So I'll just choose to live with the delusion that they're not actually together, haha.

The ending definitely could have been handled better, but I'm glad both Rikuo and Shinako realized their relationship wasn't working at ALL and decided to go their separate ways. I really wish we could have gotten the 18 episodes instead of just 12, but oh well. I still thoroughly enjoyed the series and felt very invested in it and its characters throughout the whole run, despite the last episode being the epitome of rushed.

Well that was a great way to ruin a completely serviceable anime. A certain quote about rushed games comes to mind. This ending makes everyone seem like a trash person, moreso than they already seemed, and came to such an abrupt stop it gave me whiplash.

Rou is still an unlikable, selfish, petulant brat with no self-awareness, Shinako is an indecisive selfish, emotionally stunted coward, Rikuo is no different and incapable of expressing the most basic of emotions or thoughts, and Haru has no self respect and doesn't know when to move on. All of these things could have been resolved with time and character development, but instead of resolving these issues, this ending highlights them.

This could have been pretty good, and kinda was up until these last couple episodes. They all (sans Rou tbh), could have ended up half decent, but nope, gotta rush an ending instead of waiting to make a decent one, or not doing one at all.

Yeah... I hate it, thanks.

I really don't know if it's better in the manga, but I always saw Haru as a creepy stalker who's imposing on Rikuo since he's too much of a wimp/too kind to tell her off properly. I'd be high-key scared if a stranger was almost always waiting for me to get out of my workplace to impose themselves on me after.

Here goes me hoping the two adults in this show get together and leave the kids alone to figure themselves out.

Currently watching this episode. Throughout the series, I did like the premise it explored with each character having their growing pains to deal with as young adults. But at least with recent episodes, I kept getting the impression there were details in-between with story and character developments that were left out of the series to keep things focused on the romance developments with Haru, Rikuo, Shinako, and Ro. Getting a chance to read through bits of the manga source material, that seems to be the literal case as it seems a good deal of material regarding all four characters and those close to them were deliberately cut out of the series. A bit of a crying shame too, as it seemed the series could have benefited from having an extra cour for more time to flesh out and develop its story and characters.

i know this is not the place to say this but it sucks to be an adult anime fan since its hard to find something that isn't centered around teenagers which makes it even harder to relate to an anime lately

Okay, my mind is a mess now. I don't even know what to rate this show honestly so I'll just be leaving it for tomorrow.

I could tell Shinako x Uozumi wasn't going to sail well honestly but I don't see how this correlates to Uozumi supposedly in love with Haru. Moreover, possible subtle implications that Shinako might be harboring some romantic feelings for Rou. No way.

Uozumi's monologue in the bus, if anything, confirmed that his feelings towards Haru certainly wasn't of love, I felt. Haru-chan really deserves better I must say. Really liked the conversation between Uozumi and Shinako though. I'm not going to say I saw it coming but it really felt more natural this way, to be honest.

At this point, I think I'm more glad that Kyouko-san is going to get married soon. It's a real pity considering how this show was like a solid 9/10 at one point for me. But then, these last two rushed episodes in particular dragged it down.

Kinoshita-san should've made a return and I'm sure he could've set things right, lol.

In all seriousness though, the first 8 episodes or so of the show was fantastic and it made Sunday mornings all the more special. I've seen a couple of posts on CR where the ADs gave us some insight into the production, and I'm truly thankful for that. Doga Koba with their realistic touch was brilliant.

Changing the episode count from 18 to 12, or rather keeping this vague until the very end coincidentally when things started to get a little rusty definitely wasn't a great idea though. Production of the show finished last year apparently so the COVID-19 couldn't possibly have been a reason. But then again, it might've been the Production Committee entirely but I'd just like to get that across anyway.

I don't know about a re-watch in the near future (which I'd planned at like Episode 6) but I know that ED 1 packs a punch at least. A (half) cour to flesh things out more could've ended on a so different note...

I'll drop it a 7/10 for now but I'll think about it once I wake up later this morning.

After finding out last week that this show would only have 12 episodes I was worried about the ending but I'm surprised at how good it was, at least imo.

Since he started dating Shinako, you could tell how awkward things were between them and how Rikuo started noticing things. Taking this into account, and what happened at the beginning of this episode, their break-up was inevitable. A little sad how things ended between them but it was for the best and I liked how it happened.

Crow is best bro! Rikuo and Haru had the best chemistry and it was my ship so I'm happy. Rikuo's doubts, his awkwardness and embarrassment as well as the confession felt natural. The punch and kiss were great :D

But there's one thing I didn't like, and that's Shinako's development, or lack of it. It's sad that she's never been able to move on from her past, and even Rou, who I never liked, is finally trying to do so... but then Shinako strikes again. It's even sad, and I hope Shinako-san's family love won't evolve into something romantic.

So yeah, I really liked this show, my favorite aspect has to be Rikuo's growth through it. Sure, I would have liked the 18 episodes that we initially thought would be to develop certain things better and watch some more of Rikuo x Haru, but all in all, it was satisfying. I hope that at least the last extra is about their date.

8/10. It was a good romance anime. Better than your usual shounen romance. And it was a good way to end it - though I would have been interested to see how their relationships progressed after that. (But from how I understand it even the manga didn't go a lot further beyond that point.)

As someone that knows only the anime ... I don't miss any stuff left out. It actually felt a bit lengthy at some points ... with Shinako not being able t make up her mind.

A lot of stuff preventing it from a 9/10 for me. But that last conversation between Rikuo and Shinako made this last episode a good and fitting end. So solid 8.

I liked how Rikuo grew and how he (instead of Shinako) realized that their relationship didn't have any future. Also how the atmosphere between them then was less tense. (And with Haru it was more tense and he acted shy. :D)

I still thoroughly enjoyed the series and felt very invested in it and its characters throughout the whole run, despite the last episode being the epitome of rushed.

Well said! Now I don't have to write it all out lol The whole Shinako X Rou thing just seems weird to me

Damn it! I don't like the ending! They played with our feelings. I was really invested for the Rikuo x Shinako ever since they changed the ED, the Haru game over ED. Since that ED, everything is leading to Rikuo x Shinako up to episode 11. And on the last episode, all of a sudden, their feelings changed?! They could've continued with the Rikuo x Shinako route. After all, Rou and Haru, after being broken hearted, are both on the process of moving on. Their relationships were forced. I'm disappointed about the ending!

Ooof - they skipped a whole load of chapters - no point in wading through all 113 chapters of the source material.

The only decent relationship here is the shop owner (Kyouko-san?).

Finally Rikuo grow enough balls to realise that there was absolutely no future dating Shinako as she was harbouring too many feelings for Rou and his dead brother that he could never compete with so the best he could hope for was being friend-zoned forever...

At least his relationship with Haruo (the stalker) has some chance of going somewhere, even if it doesn't work out at least it'll be more of a positive experience that staying as Shinako's lapdog, he may even get laid....

So will the final "Extra" be based on chapter 114 (April's special chapter) as that'd be the icing on the cake....

The plot just felt like a whole lot of nothing. t wasn't even that dramatic, just straight up boring. I don't really feel any attachment to any of the characters except for maybe Shinako, but that's it. This for sure was a rushed show, and the story telling certainly suffered because of it.

I'll still be giving it a 5/10 though because I believe the environment, animation, and music were all 8 or above saving the anime from a really mediocre story.

I think this is proof Dogakobo should stick with it's slice of life cute girl anime instead of trying to be all dramatic.
