Akudama Drive was definitely my favorite show this 2020. Its not a perfect show in all honesty but Studio Pierrot showed us that they have a sheer power to bring a good quality animation-wise anime if they have some time to produce it. So, that's a step up for them good job Studio Pierrot. The anime definitely has some plot holes on it but for me it was one hell of a enjoyable ride. Overall, 8/10 because characters design wise and character development were nice, story was a lil bit mediocre but its still nice, animation-wise were gorgeous and the choreography in the fighting scene aswell, lastly, this is the only show that I quitely enjoy in 2020 except the new Season of other animes that already had a season before 2020. So ye, Merry Christmas and Have a great nicely day!! |

Feel like this is one of those cases where everyone wants a happy ending. But you don't always get a happy ending. And you need to accept that especially in dystopia. I mean, what do you expect? The moon was destroyed, it seems like the only places that exist are Kansai and Kanto with Kanto being a quantum computer. While it is possible that the destination they were trying to reach is some district 13 crap, it also may not be. And it fits with the theme of the story to leave it on a cliffhanger. I don't feel like this was rushed either, it was all building to this point so it makes sense it would crescendo. And much like the beginning, it went from a 0 to 100 type thing, that's swindler's ability. |

Also why they didn't showed what was at the end of tunnel? Because most likely anything would be too "cheesy", like there was utopia so close to dystopia?? So it would be better to let people imagine ending (if there will be no season 2 or OVA). Only what could fit would be something like Zion in Matrix series or sewers in Demolition Man... So still shitty place but without "big brother" watching you. Harukei_bMaster said: So there's actually 5 more minutes but they cut it because it exceeds their broadcast time. Need to buy BD tho to see that extra 5 mins. I heard the release is 28/12. Dont know whether its being cut in between or at the end. Source from official twitter @peaswar @Kiriikun @Tynodanger @deg Don't get too hyped about those extra 5 minutes. Because if this was cut it wasn't super essential to plot, and considering how they censoring deaths most likely they cuted "unnecessary" deaths. So I'm about 80% sure that those extra minutes are showing death of all no-name Executioners and or death of Old hag. At best we will see ~1 minute of no-names deaths (who killed Swindler) and rest will be left for Execution Apprentice killing Boss. Not bcs its not important, but it exceeds broadcast time. Doesnt mean its not necessary. They just need to cut it at all cost and the director is crying over it (from kodaka tweet). If they are forced to cut, its better to cut things from at the end of tunnel. Staff encourages everyone to buy it to see completed version of the final ep, even kodaka. Those words dont seem like words to gain money, but more to whats going to happen in the next 5 mins.i can sense the passion in their tweets Btw release may 28, not 12. Too long tho |

I didn't want Swindler to die ngl, but her death and how she planned all was so perfectly done with her "akudama character" it really was a good dead I guess. Loved to see the last 2 akudama dying with a smile on the face and Swindler calling herself an S Akudama. It had some plot holes, since the world was pretty huge, but like I can't care less about the world building when they don't even try focusing on that. JiangHaoyi1979 said: Don't know if you remember, but when hacker died he left "a mark" on Swindler's phone, she only recorded on live her death, the hacking to the whole city was made by hacker's mark.So how the hell was Ordinary Person able to hack her way to the Kansai channels when she doesn't any hacking skills. So, in the end them offering just escape to that place were it was nothing more than a wasteland..... Mod Edit: Merged duplicated posts; please use the edit button. |

Just wow... This finale was more epic than I thought! Then in the middle of the fight, they played the OP theme?! Speechless.... Courier is more badass in this episode, especially our Best Girl, Swindler, for protecting the two childs till the very end of her life.. In the end, they all died, huh? Just like Akame ga Kill... This anime really exceeds my expectation from start to finish. From the lit animation, cool OSTs, badass characters, decent plot. I didn't know that Studio Pierrot will produce this kind of anime, so hands down to them. Y'all did a very freakin great job :) But what's with that cliffhanger? Why is it always that when decent anime reach to the conclusion, they will smack you with a cliffhanger or an open ending?! -_- 9/10 overall. A complete underrated hidden gem anime of Fall 2020, besides Maoujou de Oyasumi I hope this will get atleast an OVA for the complete conclusion cuz my brain is in jumbled from that ending. |

This ending kind of mirrored the ending of Stranger: Mukou Hadan (aka Sword of the Stranger). Visual-gasms aside I liked how this ordinary girl in very short time became the mask she wore - The Swindler. Yeah and the world of the show was dark (besides being literally luminous) and interesting. |

Decadence for example Yep you're right, but I mean they are both original anime, quite sci-fi themed, so we can compare them in what they have achieved. I think personally that decadence was better, and its second half was not bad, it was just different with that thing about the robots. They were both quite good, but I ñ'm quite biased as the only anime that I consume is either fantasy or sci-fi related. |

The plot is not really that unique or special but, it was still good. The rest was fucking amazing though, especially the characters, which I think is the strongest asset of the show. Cool that they left an open ending but, I honestly want to know what the hell happened with the world after that. R.I.P. Swindler and Courier, I love that Swindler also had her sick ass intro when she finally accepted being Swindler. And Courier went out with a bang, they died but they succeeded in their goal, which is to free Brother and Sister. What happened after I guess is all up to our imagination now. This show was a wild ride. 9/10 |

Satisfying ending in that bittersweet way. Figured Swindler and Courier would both die at the end as well and they sacrificed themselves in epic fashion. I have to assume that Brother and Sister walking into the light at the end means happiness for them which is well deserved. Will give this show a solid 8/10, stuck the landing. Hopefully Kansai can learn from this and not give a group such power again like the Executioners had. Can only hope the surviving members can learn as well. I think that one eyed apprentice girl survived, needs to learn to live for herself and for a better ideal... |

This was really really good. Solid 9/10 I don't understand what people are complaining about either. Amazing ending. The last scene with Courier was really touching. I did want to know where the kids arrived. They went through the light, what was on the other side? They left us to our imagination. This was perfectly executed. The music was spot on IMO. Some people are criticizing the depth of the characters and others the story. It's just plain wrong. No, it's not an FMA, AOT, Monogatari, etc.. but as a seasonal anime (which is what this is) it's a solid 9/10 or even 10/10. Why cant people realize you have seasonal animes and then decade-anime. You can't judge it with the same scale :/ I should contact Gigguk to make a video of this so you weebs learn your lesson. |

Color me surprised. I didn't expect much but this ended as well as it could have with what was set up. It was pretty intelligent. Overall, I get what the plot was trying to do. This is a dystopia where the "police" are killers-approved by law. The executioners are not evil. They just aren't functional enough to do anything besides murder. The only difference between them and Akudama is that the system gives them a permit. The boss goes too far, murdering innocent civilians under the guise of them being Akudama. This highlights the failure of a government, and from that point, a riot was inevitable. Akudama on the other hand, are just thrill seekers. Initially, the story leads us to believe they are "just" super-powered and highly dangerous villains. But then there's Swindler who was made into one just by being an ordinary person. Hoodlum was also just a two-bit crook you could find anywhere. It makes you think that Akudama aren't really all that different from normal people. And that's why Akudama won. The normal people rioted after seeing executioners murder one of them (which Swindler actually and ironically was until that moment) Therefore a punitive system like the trigger happy Executioners was always going to become corrupt and fail society. Almost feels like a parody on modern policing, but that might be giving Kodaka way too much credit. Characterwise ... practically all of them besides Swindler and hoodlum are shallow and one-dimensional. But that's clearly the point. These are static characters to drive a narrative. Brawler only thinks of fighting, courier only thinks of delivering with 100% success, Doctor only thinks about control over life and death. Executioners as mentioned before, only execute, etc. It's intentional, but not necessarily a good choice. A lack of character depth could have still been incorporated and it hurts the story that it wasn't. Still, that it's intentional at all makes me cut it some slack. I don't feel sad at all that Courier died because the characterization wasn't there, but I do feel inspired that he died living up to his ideal. That too, is the point. Most of the Akudama all end up dying with smiles, because they lived to the fullest in doing whatever they could in an oppressive society. It vibes with the energy presented throughout the whole show and animation. The major appeal of Akudama Drive is definitely the spectacle, but I think saying it had nothing but spectacle is ironically shallow. There are themes it wanted to portray that are made abundantly clear in the final episode. Most interesting of all, was how they managed to play on the normal protagonist trope. Swindler's biggest and most successful lie, was the truth she'd failed to convince everyone from day 1. |

Swindler paid the Ultimate Price for not only saving the Kids but abolishing the Police Brutality and bringing it to light. Great show. 8/10. Music was awesome, animation was pretty decent, every character had closure (which is an underrated rating criteria imo), storyline was odd in a sense that it was made to fit the characters instead the usual way of having the characters fit it.. I feel like this was one of those anime that it's easy to HATE if you watch it with the wrong mindset. People saying it was rushed or the story was all over the place, it was meant to be like that. Music and visuals were great on this last episode, action was pretty solid thorough. Could've used a couple more episodes to get a true "happy ending" or some explanation of the rest of the world and where the kids went. From the symbolism I get a rough idea but feel like they could've fleshed out the world more. Then again that probably wasn't the point and I'm just talking out of my ass. |

Anime was pretty wacky in the funny way. Though I didn't really like the symbolism that they randomly tried to force on sagishi/swindler at the end. The best part for me was the fact that the swindler pulled off the biggest swindle when she accepted herself as akudama.possibly one of those objectively good deaths in hindsight. Where her death was actually meaningful , unlike hacker , brawler or even hoodlum. |

Good series, 7.5/10. An audiovisual delight, charismatic characters, entertaining story, the worldbuilding its nothing to be surprised about. I particularly didn't like this whole ordeal to save the children. IMO, the proper way as how everything should have gone is by having them all dead an the children being sent off to Kanto again... though there is not much point on arguing about that. Or is it? Swindler went from being an ordinary person to an S rank Akudama. Could she really have acted in any other way? One could argue that she could once the collar bomb came off, as the children pointed put they were all free to go after that. It's also implied she wasn't acting out of pure greed and desire for the money, so she committed all of those crimes out of her free will. It's a shame we didn't have much interaction with the Executioners. I kind of liked the Apprentice, hehe. I was glad all the Akudamas were killed. In this particular case, though I don't feel disgusted by the cyberpunk themes (this I liked very much), I couldn't stand this... gloryfication of violence. I rooted for the Executioners since the first chapter they were introduced. I mean, come on, why would you be cheering for the group of criminals and terrorists, when it's never explicitly shown that Kanto nor Kansai did commit any reprehensible acts (aside from the experiments)? And even if you were against both Ks for the experiments they did with the children, none of the Akudama, aside from Swindler, partially, were doing that job out of consideration of them. Also, about the people revolting in the streets again... what did the boss expect after the order she gave? My God, I had never seen someone take such an stupid decision before. How could you kill unarmed protesters and reasonably expect that they wouldn't go on a frenzy afterwards? But that's enough rant for today. 7.5/10. |

A banger of a finale. I'm so glad that it bounced back from the shaky trifecta or so of episodes that it had in its second half, doing so with the crazy style that it first charmed us with and really going for the heart with the handling of the remaining characters. Seeing that propaganda segment with the bunny & shark duo being used against the system itself is an irony I can appreciate, even though it is still mad creepy. Good riddance to that whole thing. Swindler, Courier and Hacker were the martyr, brawn and brains trio I did not know I'd come to like so much. This last hurrah of all three of them had me speechless the entire episode and made me cherish the kids' open ending that much more. It was a really fun weekly watch, a gem to close the year with tbh. IBloodstormI said: There was the allusion to questioning her real age, but the framing of the "do you see me as woman?" can potentially give room to that other train of thought as well, depending on the viewer. I give this show a 3/10. I wrote a review, but it's hard to do it justice without much spoilers. Let me summarize a few points. Akudama Drive is too ambitious and failed to carry through. Like Psycho-Pass, it uses a clueless and out-of-place woman as the oracle for the author to push an emotional appeal that's too basic to address a nuanced point. Like Ergo Proxy, the pacing is so bad that it has to use a gimmicky "propaganda" talk show to fill in the details. The characters are all edgy and one dimensional. It seems to take inspiration from many places, and combine their worst qualities. Let's start with the obvious: plot holes. We see Kanto, a bunch of garbage flying around with an enigmatic shape-shifting structure in the middle that looks like it's been lifted out of Gantz. We're told it's a quantum computer and that it's downloading data into the twins. That means the twins must be some kind of bio-computer and one of two things are true:
This is important, because every operating system has an entry point, and in order for Kanto to self-regulate, it needs to download not only the state (i.e. the data) but the OS to execute its functions. This execution either replaces the twins' mental capabilities or exists along side it. If it replaces it, then the twins would not be conscious when Hacker tries to hack Kanto. If it exists along side it, then the twins were not at risk of dying in the first place. Furthermore, it's an insult to the intelligence of anyone who knows the first thing about computers to suggest that Kanto would have a port open for an arbitrary attacker to wirelessly infiltrate the system -- a quantum system no less. This is especially given that Hacker has no experience with quantum systems, that the hardware Kanto runs on most likely would not conform to any existing specifications that Hacker knows of, such that any language Hacker uses would not execute in the first place. Additionally, we know that certain characters had memories of a physical Kanto, and that Courier's bike was built in Kanto, and that the twins' experimental facilities were designed in Kanto. How did these things all exist in the first place, if Kanto is just a bunch of flying garbage around a black shell? How did Kanto enforce administrative policies over Kansai? If the shell could transform itself to build a bike, then certainly it could have transformed itself to attack or defend itself from Courier and Swindler. We're told that the bullet train is the only method of transportation between Kansai and Kanto, due to the dark zone that nothing else could pass through. So how did Kansai plan on delivering the twins at the end after they blew the train up? Every computer has a physical power switch. How were the Executioners so clueless about what was broadcasted on every monitor across the city, and why couldn't they just shut it off? Why didn't they employ basic crowd control technology like tear gas, batons, smoke and pellet guns to break up the uprising in the first place? How come they could so mercilessly mow down hundreds of protesters in the initial uprising, but stood helplessly before the second? It was the lady, the head of the Executioners that called labeled the protesters as Akudama, yet she looked to the guy who shot himself for permission in the second. Missiles completely melted and destroyed the train besides some of its steel frame, yet Swindler and Courier survived a direct missile explosion. Courier even survived a direct plasma beam to his face unscathed. He was bleeding out on an hour long drive in the wilderness, and fully conscious. The spaceships only attacked him from the front, where his only defense was. The entire air force had trouble spotting two children running barefoot. There's an unexplained emergency shutdown sequence running on a 10 minute timer. Who implemented it? It makes no sense, whether it's Hacker or Kanto, to keep a fixed 10 minute timer. If it's Kanto, it could have shut it down in the beginning. If it's Hacker, he could have shut just the military units down. Did Kanto survive Hacker's hack? If not, then they literally killed millions of conscious people ("Fluctlights" in SAO-speak) to save 2 kids that didn't need saving. Why did Kanto need for their experimental material to be conscious in the first place? It seems counter-productive, and only for a cheap emotional appeal, like starving, tortured African children. Does Kanto simply reproduce the experiment and kill hundreds of children more, since it still needs a body that doesn't deteriorate? So how was Swindler and Hacker's actions moral? They literally mass murdered every single person in Kanto, robbed them of their futures, or caused a repeat of the experiment. Let's not forget that Doctor could un-decapitate herself in real time, and that the Executioners failed to finish her off multiple times despite knowing of her capabilities. Let's not forget that the Akudama got excited when they saw billions of dollars transferred into their locked digital wallet accounts that they couldn't even use. And that there was nothing preventing the brother from hopping onto the spaceship when he pushed the sister onto it. And Swindler's disgusting moralistic posturing when she prevented Doctor from asking what every reasonable person would've wanted to know -- what the twins wanted. Maybe they could have stopped the farcical exercise right then and there when they reveal they wanted to go to the moon, and suffer eternal pain from subzero temperatures and suffocation, since they seem capable of feeling temperature on Earth. But my biggest complaint happens on episode 1. When the Akudama broke in to save Cutthroat, the commissioners order one of the guards, Quick, execute him now! The guard replies, But, there's an explosion -- and points across the room, as if an explosion on the other side of the room has any effect on an execution by decapitation. Then the commissioner says, Yes, just do it. And the guard goes, Are you sure? And Doctor sneaks up behind and kills that guard. And that's when I knew this show was going to suck hard. If that guard wasn't completely dysfunctional autistic, the whole show would have ended right there. The plot armor was unforced. The writers could have had the explosion closer to the platform and kill the guards directly. But they chose the most retarded conversation possible. I can't believe people think this is the best show of 2020. |
