Funnily enough shows like Precure share staff with Tokusatsu shows like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. Which makes sense since Precure and Super Sentai follow a remarkably similar formula. I am sure there are tokusatsu magical girl shows since that term is very broad overall. Chroma Squad was cool but too smart for my dumb dumb brain. |

Certainly an interesting question for sure - I'd have to think about it for a bit to give you a cohesive answer, but honestly for the most part I actually think the magical girl genre has generally remained one of the most satisfying - Precure continues to re-invent itself regularly, usually with a different variations on its art style each time - Sailor moon and CardCaptor both made surprise come backs, and the likes of Madoka gave us deconstruction enjoying fans something to enjoy in the modern space😄. Sure it is true that alot of the Madoka-Magika clones arn't as good as the original, some are downright garbage to be a little impolite😅 - But overall I think its a really varied genre with something for everyone and I don't right now think theres any uniuq angel I don't like to see that doesn't already exist😊 |

It's a silly slice of life comedy about former magical girls and all of the weird quirks that come from being a former magical girl. It was written for a competition, so it's basically all the first draft, but some people enjoyed it anyway. I hinted at some deeper and darker lore, but no one has asked me about it. So, I don't know if people noticed it. I have been planning to write the deeper and darker lore as a prequel to Former Magical Girls. I don't want to go into details, but it would be an alternate history conspiracy story. I'm not sure if it would work well as an anime since it would be a long story that lasts many years and some of ideas I have might be offensive to the Japanese if I'm being honest. But at the same time, dark magical girl stuff can get very weird, so people might still like my weird story. |

One idea I have is that magical girls are created by an organization and are used to exterminate the sins of mankind. Each girl is assigned to an adult partner to supervise them. They only have a limited amount of magic in their bodies and they die when they run out. Its basically a mix of magical girl shows and gunslinger girl. But yeah even though I love the genre I find that it's very stale right now and has been for a while, though to be honest, that's anime in general for me. It also sucks that the genre isn't popular over in the west more. I hope someday there will be some really good new ones but for now ill just keep watching the ones I've missed. |

Not sure if this would qualify as a "magical girl" show, but it would be cool if there was an anime where a group of girls became inspired by magical girl shows to fight crime and eventually become a crime-fighting force to be reckoned with. Maybe they build cool gadgets or use critical thinking to fight crime instead of magic? |

But I really appreciate that you took the time to get back to me and share some of your thoughts! I suppose this will be the closest I will get to interview a mahou shoujo series creator :P Ahahaha anyway anyway anyway... I do agree with momentie that the mahou shoujo genre is a lot more diverse and varied than you might think once you start digging deep and doing your own research, and therefore has a little something for everyone. There's young witches ("majokko"), some cyborgs/androids, the iconic Super-Sentai-esque magical girl warrior teams, magical girl thieves ("kaitou"), parodies, edgy parodies, hardcore edge, adult series... but I just feel like there never really is enough of the genre. There hardly is any shoujo magical girl series anymore that aren't reboots/remakes and/or continuations of older titles that already had anime adaptations, and this could be because the genre is practically dead within shoujo manga magazines. I'm serious, you can go on Anime-Planet's search and tag system and look for yourself, you're going to have the same realization that I made a while ago. I don't mind magical girl mascots or the particular twist Kuroni_Kuru mentioned, but it definitely shouldn't be done too much. I agree with GrandLoaf that we gotta get more stuff like Rayearth, you'd think there'd be more magical girl isekai out there! Urban/cyberpunk too. Once again, thank you everyone for contributing whatever thoughts you had to the thread ^_^ |

I think a magical girl murder mystery series could be really interesting. Something like Kindaichi Shounen in which there are different arcs with various locked room murder mysteries. Kind of like what Rail Zepplin tried to do but in a way that actually makes sense. |

reporting back, I really didn't want to do this but I have to make the prequel for my story. why? because these are all brand new characters and I keep referencing their lives. I don't want to break the story and do flashbacks. (I really, really don't like how one piece handles flashbacks) I'm also trying to put every story I have onto a single timeline. it's working, sort of. this also means I can answer some questions people might have like where do the enemies come from. it also means I have to find workarounds for a lot of things. progress with the main story is really slow. I have the setting, the characters (who need some good personality quirks still), I have the main events, enemies, conflict, outcomes. but I'm awful at writing the actual plot, and making it fun. |

I am not particularly a huge fan of mahou shoujo but if I was able to make my own magical girl show it would likely be extremely violent/gory with excessive amounts of graphic nudity with it's focus on an adult cast. Maybe throw in some random panty fanservice just for the hell of it as ecchi bait. |

I would make a mostly chill series, possibly about a girl who has no special characteristics and doesn’t stand out that much. She would probably go out and do her magical girl stuff in the afternoon, not at night (parents would be more suspicious if the girl sneaks out at night, afternoon is better since most japanese kids are away from home during the afternoon). I would make a it centering around a main villain, who is likeable (i loveee charismatic villains who are smart). The episodes will be about defeating obstacles sent by the villain. Lastly, I would love for the main character to have a special outfit or costume to wear. It doesn’t have to be so crazy that you could stand out in public, but not too shabby either. Maybe like a nice dress or something. You can obviously tell i put a lot of thought into this |

Something that takes place in antiquity, and were the characters channel spirits to transform could be pretty cool! Each spirit would channel a different animal through them and parts of those could be seen in the transformations. The transformations themselves would be upgraded as the series goes on. For the romance aspect, a love triangle'd be a must! I also want there to be uncharacteristic coupling involved, maybe for some of the secondary main characters? Of course, the main themes would still revolve around friendship, love, courage, saving the world, etc., but there could be some darker aspects and drama as the series goes on as well. |

I'm Fario-P said: @sunprincess01 @KetchumAsh @Klefki_of_Awsome @MeltingSky Nice to meet some more magical girl fans hanging around the forum! Wanna contribute some thoughts to my thread? :P I'm not super into the mahou shoujo as a genre as a whole, but there certainly are some magical girl shows I have really enjoyed and there does seem to be a common thread running through them which is that I tend to go for the darker more surreal, and abstract seinen takes on the genre or comedic deconstructions. So, I'm perhaps not the best person to ask when it comes to ideas for writing a magical girl story. I think I would write something pretty weird, like a comedy about a bunch of over-the-hill jaded and off-kilter magical girls who are all now in their 30s or perhaps even senior citizens who have retired or semi-retired from their roles as magical girls. They are all a bit nuts and just trying to get by in their everyday lives despite all the mental tics and scars they've been left with from the insanity of having spent their childhoods as Magical Girls battling evil incarnate, cosmic horrors, paparazzi, bad hair days, and worst of all their creepy stalker fans. There could be a fun social dynamic having them serve as reluctant role models to the up-and-coming next generation of plucky, optimistic, try-hard Magical Girl's whose spirits haven't yet been broken by life. Despite sounding quite dark and sardonic, I think I would aim for a more comedic slice-of-life tone with some underlying bittersweet life-affirming vibes, a tone similar to something like Hinamatsuri. It would be fun to deconstruct some common magical girl tropes. For instance, there could be a dangerously low number of magical girls in the world since the potential to become one is directly connected to your bloodline, and like 90% of mahou shoujo seem to only be into other girls for some reason. If it wasn't for the work of the legendary Magical Girl Lily-Chan, who created Hand Holding fertility magic, mahou shoujo would have gone extinct hundreds of years ago. The sparkles during a magical girl's transformation sequence aren't there to make them look pretty, but rather they are there to burn out the retinas of any creep that tries to sneak a peek. There are hundreds of little tropes to playfully subvert. The list goes on and on. |

That bit you quoted was referring to the setting of the story I was proposing, rather than magical girl's stories in general. You may, however, be right that the LGBT magical girl trope I was referencing isn't quite as prevalent as I presumed. I have watched less than 10 mahou shoujo anime in total, almost all of which leaned toward more dark and surreal seinen stories rather than vanilla shoujo and shounen, so I have a somewhat skewed view of the genre as a whole. It does still seem a bit odd to me that so much of what I've watched had yuri overtones if the genre as a whole doesn't tend to lean that way. When I think back on it, roughly 2/3 of the magical girl series I've read or watched had at the very least some yuri subtext. I mean, even Sailor Moon had yuri pairings and that's one of the few old-school mainstream shoujo magical girl shows I've seen. It's been like 20+ years so my memories are a bit dicey on that one, but I'm pretty certain. I guess I'll just have to take your word on it about the more mainstream series differing in that respect. I still think my proposed joke would work since there are literally dozens of yuri magical girl shows and manga I've come across where magical girls being into other girls is a thing. |

I have a few very loose ideas for magical girl manga that I've been tossing around in my head for a while. One of the ones that keeps comin back to me is adult office workers who moonlight as a magical girl team. Still high-fem and cute, but with a variety of ages and appearances (including men). |

I would make it unlike Tokimeki Tonight. Aira's outfit may be cute, but her arc is easily the worst of the manga's 3 story arcs. |
