First Question: How did he end up locked in his room? Was he free before? And how did he finally get out?

It doesn't really matter. What I like about this is that it doesn't devolve into boring technical mumbo jumbo. The idea, I guess, is that he never really ever wants to leave his room. He thinks the 4.5 tatami room is ideal so in a sense his wish comes true -- his entire world because a span of tatami rooms, containing his basic survival needs. He becomes free when he finally "grabs the opportunity in front of him."

If really need a technical explanation, you can think the old fortune teller did it. Or something.

Second Question: Why wasn't he able to meet his other selfs except this only time back then?

You can make up some explanation if you want, but the short answer is it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, if they release a DVD, I'm buying it. I am seriously going to buy up everything they release (in my region) regarding this series.

The ending was what I wanted to happen all along, but it still felt kind of cheesy. I'd say that the journey was better than the destination.

I want to be biased and give this show a 9 but I don't have it in my heart to do that. Instead I gave it a 10.

The art which I didn't like at first grew on me. I like science fiction-y type stuff so this fit the bill.

The show managed to make it into my top 5.

Everything was pretty much flawless. Original story, happy ending, perfect length. I don't think it was drawn out too much.

Basically he really wanted to leave his room, but he couldn't bring himself to. I can relate. <_<

A little late here, but yeah, this show was really good. Glad my cousin forced me to watch it. Definitely one of the best I've seen, and easily one of the best recent series.

Also known as Monster in a box, but I hate that handle...and it doesn't fit here.

Finished my marathon of The Tatami Galaxy.

Slowpoke.jpg

Pretty cool show, a pitty it drags in the middle, and since there's no actual evident point to the show (or how the episodes are connected) up 'till the last two episodes, my interest was systematically diminishing until episode 10.

Could've been better if they had dropped more hints to the endless tatami galaxy event occurring throughout the show as to raise more interest and further the connection (and that encounter in the secret cat society episode doesn't really count, it was just there, not really a hint).

Never the less the last two episodes connected everything (including the OP/ED), and while the last one was rushed, it was a nice finale.

Also, needed more Akashi. For being so important, her character fleshing felt shafted when compared to Ozu and the others.

8/10 - Cool, interesting show, definitely unique, but could've been better as a whole.

Basically the same as with Kaiba, unique, interesting aspects, definitely worth watching, but with weak parts that don't contribute to the whole and somehow diminish the overall enjoyment (In TTG's case the middle, in Kaiba's case, the finale).

Just finished it, and I have to agree that it's the top contender for anime of 2010. I thought Durarara would have taken that, but a boring second half ruined it's chances on that.

Wonderfully cynical and razor sharp, this show really surprised me.

As much as I loved the last 2 episodes(which were amazing to say the least).. the repetitiveness that built up to those just makes me not want to give the series a 9/10 for some reason. Yes, you could argue that the so-called repetition was necessary to the overall plot but were the 3 love choice episodes really needed? :\

8/10 from me.

nice anime although its beyond my understanding to fully grasp the story but i guess his just a hikkikomori dreaming on his room for like weeks that made up this parallel episodes from 1-9 then suddenly on episode 10-11 it was his realization to change his ways or life

kinda psychological, ill gives this a 8, nice ride and a happy ending too

hah. I didn't think I'd be able to like this series as much as i did. especially with watashi talking at 2000 wpm. but surprisingly, I found this anime really good. nothing about it bothered me at all. i just wished the vocabulary wasn't so immense, as i couldn't keep up with everything he was saying. i understood most of it though thanks to all the comments and such so it was not a bad watch at all. :D

i like how the narrator talked about how watching a developing love is boring. haha, I wanted to see that the most. not only watashi and akashi but ozu and kohinata as well. but i can't complain since the whole paradox story was very well done. yet it was very predictable that grabbing the little bear thing.. mogimuchi or whatever would let him out of the room. but whatevs. more people should definitely have seen this. tired of people complaining about how they hate all the moe tsundere animes that are being put out.

Mind....blown.

A series of what seemed like standalone episodes are actually tied to each other in some way. I feel idiotic for not noticing this the entire time.

Tatami Galaxy is godlike in so many ways that it's hard for me start somewhere. A stunning psychological and intellectual series to say the least.

Which is amazing considering how little love is actually shown between Watashi and Akashi.

I had a feeling that Watashi was imagining Ozu's expression when we saw Ozu reporting to Jougasahi a few episodes prior. It came off as the expression of unwanted kindness coupled with impure expectations, as was made quite clear in the last few seconds of this episode.

Anyways, the repetition had me going for a while. At first I thought time travel was involved, then I thought he was handling all the clubs at once, then I thought he was multiple people or had split personalities... But then it turned out to be parallel universes that were starting to intersect? Very well played Tatami Galaxy, very well played.

Ah. What else can I say. The ending was perfectly satisfying in a sense that I felt emotional inside when Watashi saw everyone.
The part where he transformed into different persons, that was really a great touch to it.
The last part made me lol. Watashi -> Ozu xD
As the OP played, I was smiling like an idiot and tapping to the beat. :D

I wasn't very impressed. I'm surprised at how small a minority I see to be in because of that. But then again, not too many people have seen this, so it doesn't seem to have very broad appeal to get people who might not like it to watch in the first place.

It's a decent show, imo, but it's got a lot of shortcomings.

First of all, I didn't care for Watashi's grandiose, obsessive, naive ramblings. I certainly can't relate to him. Maybe it made for an interesting setup at the start, but it just got old quickly. The fact that the dialogue comes so fast doesn't help things. It just makes it a bit more unpleasant to watch.

I also never cared for this type of constant wild weirdness that is so prevalent here (the psychological element). It's like the show has ADD, as it tosses weird things at you almost as fast as it tosses dialogue at you. I don't mind it, but much of it really seems pointless to me, as if it exists just to be wild and different. The show relies on it too much.

People here are forced to come up with their own interpretations of the seemingly pointless artistic choices, looking for subtle symbolism and meanings. I never really cared for symbolism even when it's rather obvious, so I certainly don't get anything out of symbolism that is totally dependent on personal interpretations to make any sense. I feel like I'm at an art gallery looking at a multi-million dollar piece of art that looks to me like somebody just splashed a bunch of paint at the canvas. And everyone around me is fawning over it and describing different ways that they see a masterpiece in it. I think even if I agreed with some of these interpretations, it still wouldn't make my viewing experience any more enjoyable.

Some of the first episodes were good just in their own right. I mean, the way Watashi got fed up and publicly humiliated Jougasaki by exposing his embarrassing secrets... That was funny and interesting. But what brought down this show for me was the heavy way in which they purposely made so many things repeat. You get a very wildly different set of events, but the core things holding it together are simply repetitive. How many times do we need to see the fortune teller. Yeah, we know from the start that he just needs to give that white doll to Akashi and he'll end up happy, so stop already. All you gain from episode to episode is a little bit more info on the characters. Really, the episodes aren't even very memorable.

I mean, I did sort of like the idea of seeing how things change with his choices of different paths, but I'd rather that these changes reveal something a bit more subtle about what he was doing wrong each time. Maybe for each episode, they could have given us better detail about how exactly this new attempt at a rose-colored campus life could possibly be superior and lead to happiness, and then develop a revelation throughout each episode about how this was a flawed goal to focus on. Then I'd have my own expectations about how it would work, and I'd be more interested in watching how it succeeded or failed.

But instead, I was left to just observe something wild without any expectations about what crazy stuff was going to happen. I had nothing to look for or to hope for. I just knew Watashi would be naive and obsessive and would gain nothing. There were no revelations. Just wild stories that usually weren't funny, and were too off-the-wall to be really engaging.

And why couldn't there be more Akashi? She was actually interesting and fun to watch. In the end, she didn't even seem like such a wonderful "goal" to catch. She started out very intriguing, but actually became less interesting as the series went on.

I give it a 6.5/10.

perfectly executed as "the tatami galaxy." can't believe i only realized at episode 10 why this anime was called the tatami galaxy lol...

the truth is.. i didn't expect much from this anime, but wow.. it totally blew my expectations that i had.. i was going to give this a 9.. but i'll bump it into 10 seeing how the purpose of the anime was perfectly executed..

i did put this on hold at episode 1.. when i had first watched this seeing how the dialogue was too fast compared to all the animes i've seen.. but after trying it again in this winter break.. i'm glad that i did.. twas a quick refreshing entertaining anime in the last day of my break...

The story itself was nothing mindblowingly good but was a solid way to bring out the message. Repetitions of different scenes weren't used as effectively as possible and the moral of the story was pretty ham-fisted. The different crazy things Ozu had going on turned out to be disappointingly meaningless, too.

It's pretty difficult to judge the characters in an anime that makes a point of how you will understand different sides you perceive of them if you get to know them. The lead was a good character anyway. A good guy to a fault and stubborn, but still believable and someone I sympathized with. The others were used pretty effectively in different situations and their roles felt pretty natural.

The artstyle served the absurd world of the series and was very expressive and pleasant to look at.

I guess this leans closer to 8 than 7.

Still no idea whether the moths were regrets, repressed emotions, broken promises or what though although Watashi told me it should be obvious. Annoying~

Well, this was a really good watch. At first the MC's fast talking was very distracting, but as soon as I got used to it I really enjoyed the show. I didn't like how Akashi was losing focus over time though and certain bits were repeated too many times, still well worth watching. 8/10.

Just because it was the best 2010 could offer according to many (wannabe-hipsters) doesn't mean it was good.
I only enjoyed the last three eps and maybe the first, the whole '3 girls' arc was horrible and the Johnny parts probably scarred me for life with it's horrible animation and voice-acting. Also, for a series that looked classy as fuck it was suprisingly trashy.

7/10, most points were scored with the amazing art and OP.

Ozu did the things he did because he was living the life he wanted to live, carpe diem. I'm not surprised someone who can't even appreciate such a simple conclusion would miss the point of this brilliant series as a whole and end up not liking it. Answering this question only because it's been brought up multiple times.

Anyways I just watched this for the second time since 2010 and felt compelled to come here and say yes it is indeed still a 10/10. ^^

A satisfying conclusion to a great series. This was a cyclical story done well - it had a clever plot and, despite the sense of repetition, it never felt boring. Also, the art was impressive and unique.

The series took a while to win me over and there were a couple of episodes that felt weaker than the rest but, still, overall there was a lot to like here and I am glad that I picked this show up. 9/10.

This episode was the most clear to me and the rest went so fast I couldn't enjoy it. I don't know is it something wrong with me or why is this. Watashi talks too seriously fast I can't keep up with the subs.

I'm giving the series "just" 6/10. I can't see why I should put higher score for a series I COULDN'T enjoy even if I tried to understand what the hell is going on and read as fast as I could.

Don't get me wrong - I like dementia anime (Kaiba is one of my favourites) and I'm kinda sad I can't like this anime more.

Show was a bit confusing but when it started to loop that confusion disappeared and potential started to increase and then the last extremly but meaningfully philosophical episodes + epic ending created a very emotional mixture which made this show into one of the best shows I have seen so far . It somehow cheered me up and was entertaining yet not dumb.

READ THIS EXTREMELY FAST:

I will be honest i was planning to give this show a 7 out of 10,but the ending swayed me to give it a 9/10(I give 9's only to those shows i want to rewatch at one time or another and 10's only to those shows I already have rewatched). The whole show seemed like a mindscrew to me in the begining, but the ending put all the pieces back together brilliantly and it had a great final message.
