| The Clannad dub was terrible. Nagisa and Tomoya were alright but almost everyone else sounded like crap. The jokes were translated well. Plus it got a lot better in After Story. But overall, it's a pretty bad dub. K-On is another bad dub. The voice acting is good but the script is just awful. They take liberties where they shouldn't and leave obscure Japanese references that could be easily translated. For example, yen is translated into dollars but a Japanese song about auxiliary verbs is left in with the English voice actor singing in Japanese. I will give them points for leaving in 'Azunyan'. I must clarify that I have no opinion on dubs vs subs. This is not a dub vs sub thread. Even if you only watch dubs, you must have seen at least a few that affected the show's quality |

I thought the voice acting was great in the Bang Zoom dub. Cristina Vee is a solid Mio and Cassandra Lee is pretty close to her seiyuu. Stephanie Sheh was a bad choice for Yui but she does the best she can. Christine Marie Cabanos is good as Azusa and the rest of the cast is okay. But the script? Awful. Worst translation choices I've ever heard. That's what makes the K-On dub so bad. And this comes from someone who has watched both seasons dubbed and subbed. The first season's quality isn't really affected by the dubbing but the Second Season is damn near unwatchable if you watched the sub first. It's really the only show I've seen where a dub has made the show worse for reasons other than shoddy acting and stupid edits. |

| I actually found the Clannad dub pretty good. The only one I didn't like that much was Sunohara. Of course the Japanese is better, but I still find them all nice choices. It's the kind where even though the voices don't match the japanese voices, it still suits the character. Now kill me, I know you want to ;) |

| I don't know if this should count as an English dub or not, because this is what Japan did. Which is why there are Japanese subtitles there. Probably sounded fine to them, to us it sounds hilarious. I highly suspect that the mangaka does the girl's voice, which would explain why she sounds like a 30 year old woman and not a high schooler. You should also know that part 1 of this is two songs, the first of which is a Phil Collins song. As you can tell, this is clearly comedy gold as an OVA (shame as the manga it's based on is pretty good, and having read the manga, I can't tell what's going on in this OVA at all). Part 1 doesn't have any dialogue which is why I posted part 2. And if you're wondering why they went with English, the series takes place in America, as part 1 opens with a totally not-inappropriate-by-today's-standards glorious shot of the Twin Towers. The difference is that the entire OVA is in glorious English, but just a random funny scene in an anime with "I am maddo scientist! Itsa so khuuule! Sunnuvabitchu", but the whole painful OVA. Also, I prefer this vid for hilarious Gazery's Wing dialogue and acting But we can't fail to mention how the bad guys talk in what appears to be entirely made up words in their dialogue. It's amazing, but only more so that the dub improves the terrible story and dialogue and "characters" by making every line eligible for instant meme status. I know the topic said English dubs...but this simply must be mentioned How often do you see a dub so bad you don't even need to know the language it's dubbed in? As someone once said "it's like they're all voiced by the same 40-year old dude. This isn't a joke, it's the real dub. |
