The hit and run incident definitely has a similar vibe. More talk about the past and present that connects this whole arc together. The culprit had the guts to show themselves. This arc was shorter than the previous but had the familiar feeling overall.

But seriously, they deserved the truth especially Kobato.

Of all the places Kobato and Osanai could’ve escaped, they escaped to the rooftop.. I mean at times when someone is chasing you, it’s best to go outside at a grounded place lol, because yeah, the stuff at the rooftop would only make things worse, and more so, if someone is out to crush your already crushed body with a hammer. Still, that nurse, Eiko, planning it all just to get back at Kobato, all because she thinks KOBATO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED BACK THEN BETWEEN HER AND SHOUTAROU?!?!?!? THAT WAS BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN FAMILY STUFF.

Sheesh, people really be holding grudge against you just because they think you’re “wrong”. You actually being in the wrong or not doesn’t even matter. I’m glad we didn’t witness a murder if anything. Shoutarou really did save at least three lives there, coming in just at the right moment. All of this at one place though, this arc really was something, or more like this season. This over the first season for me, for the content adapted...

.. I mean we saw Urino getting taken apart by Osanai(I just hope my guy is in good health wherever he is.. we didn't even see him after 7th ep), and yeah, then almost a murder here in the finale. The direction and stuff has always been stellar, and yeah this is that one thing I'll miss from this series.

I hope we get a third season or at least some sort of continuation someday, as yeah, we were just talking about the college and stuff after all, and they left:(

The chase is on against Eiko Hisaka, with Osanai leading Jogoro out from her grasp as far as possible. And when both find themselves cornered at the hospital's roof heliport confronting the mad nurse and her brother Shotaro, which by then, the family had already been split apart, and more than silencing Fujidera, the peril of her parents breaking up losing the only family Eiko could've had by reuniting with Shotaro, this murderous outcome was not what he wanted from the outset.

Thanks to Osanai's intervention for Shotaro to act, he ended up saving Jogoro, despite resenting him for trying to find drama within the family. But this ending up being the tale of two sides that seemingly had nothing to do with each other, become relevant in the grand scheme of things. In the end, it's Nagahara Takuma who was the all-important lead in the hit-and-run case, though Osanai was the denominator that ended up making the difference at the end of it all.

Even till the end, Osanai keeping her relationship with Jogoro romantically platonic, not just because they share the same interest in sweets, but the future set for them, will have their paths be merged once again, though it's time that will make that bond.

No doubt about it, Season 2 is on a league of its own, surpassing expectations from Season 1.

We knew this girl was crazy from the moment she pulled out that hammer last episode, but I didn’t think she was this crazy.. willing to fucking KILL Kobato over an assumption that he was the reason Shoutarou attempted suicide and ruined her chance to reunite her broken family. It’s reasonable to be mad over that sure, but… being FUCKING OUT FOR BLOOD is not justifiable. All over, again, just an assumption lmao. Big props to her sieyuu though, she fucking nailed the crazy pissed act.

But ofc, it wouldn’t be Shoushimin without Osanai having the ultimate ace up her sleeve that she saves ‘til the end… this time calling up FUCKING SHOUTAROU HIMSELF TO DEBUNK EVERYTHING. Osanai is just a dawg through and through, nothing more to say. Though, now with the revelation that Shoutarou, or well Miura now I guess, was alive this whole time, this means our two detectives have to put the final pieces together in this big-ass puzzle one last time.

Which means the whole thing is over now. Our little ordinary heroes have grown… together. It wouldn’t have been possible any other way, after all. Gotta say though, this open ending did leave me wanting more, and at first, I wasn’t fully satisfied with how things wrapped up. But in hindsight, I think it fits the tone of Shoushimin perfectly. The anime was never about dramatic twists or loud emotions, it was subtle, chill, and often left things for the viewer to interpret.

That’s part of what made it stand out to me and why it’s already one of the best releases of the year, and probably remain so.

Just the relationship between Kobato and Osanai reflects that same understated tone. Whether their bond is platonic, symbiotic, or something quietly romantic is up to interpretation, but it’s clear that they’ve grown much closer since the start. Osanai asking Kobato to join her in Kyoto feels like a small, meaningful step forward. Osanai even designed a future “maze” in Kyoto just for him, something only he would enjoy... seriously only he would xD

And that’s a wrap folks wow. Crazy how I went from being ambivalent on this season to thinking of it as 10x better than season 1 all because of these last few episodes! It’s too damn bad we’ve basically adapted the whole story. I need to see Kobato and Osanai’s college life and him getting his “just desserts”!

Lapin Track brought out all the stops for these last two episodes. The hospital chase scene was so tense and the animation on that scene of Osanai pushing Kobato to the elevator was so good. My big question is how tf are there no other nurses or guards in there? Surely they should’ve passed by a nurse station or saw another patient or employee. That hospital was quiet as hell!

“Do you have a hammer or anything” lmaoo. I love how they were legit scared for their lives. They’re detectives, not fighters so this was really life or death which our two leads haven’t had to deal with. Solving a case is one thing, surviving a standoff with someone wanting to kill you is totally different.

So we finally get Eiko’s motives and honestly man I do understand her feelings, but she was taking everything out on Kobato when she should’ve directed those feelings towards her parents who didn’t allow her to be with her brother. They let their petty relationship drama impact their kids and that’s on them. Of course it’s easier to go after the defenceless high school kid walking home though than to actually stand up to your wealthy and powerful parents. Doujima didn’t even show up in the episode, but he saved the day by finding Shotaro and having him talk eiko out of things. Who knows what would’ve happened if he didn’t.

In just two episodes we got more character development from our leads than in the preceding 20. I have a completely different understanding and appreciation of Kobato and Osanai’s characters. They might be a little crazy(ok maybe a lot), but they’re not sociopaths and this proved it. Kobato didn’t get involved in Shotaro case just to sate is more curiosity, but to help them pay the hospital bills by finding a culprit. Osanai isn’t a complete demon, she was scared af during this whole ordeal and she cried TWICE during all of this. They’re just too autists who are perfect for one another

That “what kind of person do you take me for, of course I thought that” conversation is exactly why Shoshimin is so special. The dialogue is just so natural, Osanai and Kobato’s chemistry is amazing and it’s such a subdued, auteur cinematic experience. It’s nothing quite like this show out there so I’m definitely sad it’s over, but credit to the author for constantly having me change my views on characters and keeping an open mind. Masterclass in writing.

We better get a season 3 of this show because I'm not excited to see this anime go away forever. This woman is crazy wit the chase and everything tho and this arc is lowkey my favourite out of all the ones from this season and the previous one

I was expecting a bit more from Eiko's motive and this finale overall, but it was still the best arc so far. Really saved this season for me.

The cases in this series are a mixed bag. At worst they're a yap session about a nothing burger. There's only so far you can go with mundane and characters carrying the episodes. Yet arcs like this make me wish for another season.

That was... an experience. The reveal of naive past deeds, the complex emotional tension of family relationship, and the conclusion that hint of an "ordinary" future.
This episode warped up the series with a satisfying conclusion but oh what I wouldn't give for a third season.
Osanai is scheming, forever scheming.

Is this the End? Feels like it since they brought up strawberry tarts again (oh the inhumanity from Season 1!). Oh & Osani, we all KNOW you are just such a little schemer. Still don't know what happened in the first accident, completely.
Eiko should realize even without Kobatos' interference, their plan had minimal chance to bring their parents back together. They clearly were over each other, & nothing the kids did was ever going to change that.

Osanai the schemer, as always. Funny how Dojima saved their asses once again, guy's the embodiment of reliable. The running away from the killer scene had some old movie vibes, had me laughing and they also went up of all places. But the case is solved and Kobato also had the oppurtunity for some closure after meeting with Shoutaro and talking things out.

But unfortunately Kobato will be missing the exams and will have an year gap. Osanai being Osanai gave him the task to find her after going to Kyoto. Also as someone who went through similar situation due to health issues and going through surgery as well, I feel him. Hope he'll be able to adjust.

Overall this second arc was a banger, these last few episodes just flew. Was totally engrossed in the story. Loved how such a simple case can also have such levels of depths and complexity. Solid 9/10 for the second half.

But it saddens me to know this'll share the same fate as Hyouka with not much material left to adapt and who knows when or if ever, the author will continue. Why make such great series if you don't want to continue. That said really enojoyed both seasons, gonna miss this.

Is the novel finished or is it in the same situation as the author's other work, koten-bu/hyouka? As in the author said the story will continue but they are really taking their time?

In terms of mystery, I'm not sure which season was the best, but overall I think the first one was better because it didn’t have any bad characters like this season did. seriously, there were two: that useless Urino and Kobato’s trashy girlfriend lol. They added nothing to the season and it made no sense to put those two losers on the cover.

Anyway, the arson case was just okay and way too predictable by the halfway point it wasn't obvious Osanai was the culprit. Now the last case? That one was exceptional, mixing past and present with interesting dialogue and riddles. Great ending, and Osanai already threw another mystery at Kobato lol. That girl is insane. This one definitely deserves a season 3. Solid 8/10.

I didn't like this season at all, atmosphere too cold, last season was more warm, new wasted characters "Tokiko and Urino" why introduce them and cast away so fast, and Kengo barely appeared in this season, Osanai and Kobato has a very weird relationship, why they are not already together. 5/10 for this season, last season I gave 7/10

Cold season.

Best series of the season for me, with Apothecary Diaries as close second. But the atmosphere and the artistic direction of this show were unique and on a league of their own.

To think that at the beginning of S1 we were investigating how cocoa was prepared, and now we ended up with a murder attempt...

I would really like a 3rd season, but it probably won't happen.
It was a fun ride until it lasted.

Same situation. e.g. there was an 11 year gap between Volume 4 (2009) and Volume 5 (2020). These are adapted. The sixth volume came out last year. Probably not getting a new one anytime soon unless there is a divine intervention.

It seems like there are some cases still not fully resolved, like the ice bucket in the locker in the first season. But the source is still not ending so it makes sense even though I'm not sure there'll be another adaptation.

With that said, I'm always happy when I see anime that try to be original and not afraid to fail.

@Palie365 Thanks for the answer. That's unfortunate really. Speaking of hyouka, I remember something about the author working on the 7 volume, but that was years ago and may have been false news. Would be kind of funny and sad if shoushimin gets another volume faster than hyouka.

Loved this season so much. After watching the the first half of this season, I never thought that the story would take this direction in the second half..felt kinda forced but it was a fine arc.
Thank God..Hisaka is still alive. Eiko's frustration is justified but trying to kill Kobato wasn't the answer. Now Kobato learnt the lesson that you should stop prying when someone tells you to stop..even when your intentions are good.
Osanai never ceases to surprise me. So she kinda orchestrated this episode's events as well lol
Osanai and Kobato are laughing at each other like two little weirdos..that was was cute 😅❤️❤️
Can't wait to see their journey continuing in the university..

Well that was a fine wrap up to the season, I think I did like this more than season 1 but it still didn't wow me. A lot of plotlines did somewhat fly over my head since I just never got invested in this show but I mean I don't hate it or think its bad its just not for me. The highlight of this anime for me is Kobato and Osanai's dynamic, and Osanai in general is just a fun character because she feels like a landmine waiting to be stepped on.

Comparing this to some other shows such as Hyouka, I think this was far better than Hyouka. Ron Kamonohashi's forbidden deductions however was a far better show mainly for having much more fun and interesting cast members and imo just being a better detective show in general. Then you have the detective is already dead which in my personal opinion is in a league of its own compared to the previous mentioned stuff. Hell I think Kimi is better than every protagonist from the previous mentioned detective shows and don't get me started on Siesta.

But putting comparisons aside It was a decent show overall. Just didn't invest me much.

This was just leaps and bounds better than season 1. Everything was so much heavier with actual challenging progressions. We got to see the ups and downs of the Kobato and Osanai -- actual character development. No fodder mysteries that were made out to be a bigger deal than they were.

I found myself looking forward to the new episodes each week as opposed to the first season; where the episodes were pretty boring and dragged on. I'm leaving this anime feeling quite resolved.

What a deep dive of the quest to be normal.

When you're strange, faces come out of the rain
When you're strange, no one remembers your name
When you're strange, when you're strange, When you're strange.

In my top five for the season a slow burn that was well cooked by Lapin Track some of the best animation and direction of the season.

The motive behind the crime was just about on the right side of the believable, although it was close to that boundary. For Shoushimin, it does feel quite rare that we got this level of explanation, and maybe holding back a few of those details would have been better. I did enjoy that this was a more serious case and I'm always impressed how consistent the character writing is when it comes to Kobato and Osanai. Osanai punishing him at the end his even slight besmirching of her character is very in-keeping.

Overall, this was a better season for me than the first. I still think there's a sweet spot between everyday mundane mystery to solve vs. police-investigation-required crime for the story to consistently find in order for me to enjoy it as much as I could, but I'm definitely confident that it's possible. The visuals in the show, how they film the scenes, the voice acting, all of it is incredible.

This is how a Grade A series should go. Consistent writing. smart plots that flow well, decent animation, great characters, conclusions that generally tie up all loose ends. Perfect execution.
The only thing I would have loved to see is the tiniest bit of physical affection between the two. A small cheek kiss would have just been the "whipped cream on top" ending for me.
