Fuck... usually there's at least 160 to 190 or so at any given time. That's bad. That's really fucking bad. Did an admin accidentally deploy an auto-ban phrase that wasn't supposed to be added, like "sexy", or some other word 50% of MAL users would say at least once?

EDIT: And it just jumped up to 122 users. Did @Serafos poison the world's water supply with his melatonin again?

This shit is my escape from the endless discourse I am constantly aware of it multiple chaotic spheres. I need a place to detox from that.

The harsher rules over the years are probably a big factor in that. Speech is increasingly getting moderated online while websites bend the knee to payment processors and advertisers. I miss when we had debates on news, politics, lolis, gender, ect. Opinions of the masses are not exactly what the people with big money want spread.

Maybe instead of looking at the amount of users you should look at the amount of posts being made. You could have a thousand users browsing the forums with only two who are actually posting something. This thread already got nine posts including mine and recent posts are still being submitted nearly every minute. Real dead forums are the ones with no posts for several months, I doubt we're heading there yet.

It's been like that for quite some time, and the worse part is that many users are only here to post in Forum Games (as atrocious as the place might seem to some). It's what happens when the mods that are not invested in the community and who randomly delete comments, threads, reviews, etc. under their OCD's compulsions, often not following their own guidelines (when you delete comments inside a thread, you have to post a "thread cleaned" message, yet that is hardly ever the case for some individuals).

Forums are a dying medium. Frankly I surprised MAL forums are as active as they are. For better or worse you'd struggle to find a more active anime forum if you exclude Reddit.

I got banned because of that 2 weeks ago, same as some other users, perhaps even @BigBoyAdvance got banned because of that, and not his toxic posts.

@rohan121 Oh yeah I miss when basement-dwelling trumpets made twelve "No TrAnS iN mY public bAtHrOoMs!" threads every day.

"politics" here was just socially inept, loli loving cheetos eaters spewing their hatred 24/7. Good riddance.

There's no need to look for convoluted reasons why this place sees less and less traffic. Forums like this are an early 2000s thing (and so are we). MAL is a survivor, the activity here is impressive considering how out of fashion the whole thing is now.

@Deathko They can literally say those things on Facebook and Twitter now. Bringing back highly controversial topics is likely not going to change anything, but the problem is that they use the Rule 7 excuse to ban anything remotely fun + we have a redundant rule 6.

There are 200 users browsing forums currently but most of them wouldn't come to CD anyway as there is nothing interesting over here

Either they simply go to AD or episode discussion

@Tawaney im speaking with experience so trust me its more active in the past you can get at least 500 users browsing the forums to an average of 600-900 users browsing the forums everyday plus replies on threads usually gets around 2 pages at least for its first day of activity

@fleurbleue not sure if those thread counts since its only multiple replies from few users unlike in the past where you can see many different users replying to a thread

@fleurbleue You can only ping so many users in one post before they stop being treated as "mentions". I don't remember the exact number, but I think it's around six. After those, any subsequent mentions from that post simply don't result in mention notifications.

Forums are getting more and more old-fashioned, so it's not surprising that there are less and less active users, this is a phenomenon that can be seen in almost every forum and is not only a MAL problem. A large portion of MAL users create an account here to have a list for their anime and manga, to read reviews or to get information about a certain anime/manga/novel, only a fraction are interested in the other features...

@-DxP- This is partially true. There is still a high demand in talking about various kinds of things in the "General" or "Off-topic" section on websites. MAL has the advantage that it comparatively still has a slightly active community, though people tend to be more active in forum games or in personal conversations. Possibly because it's convenient since many people log-in for their lists either way.

What has caused a decrease in activity can be summarized in the following points:

1) the lack of commitment from newer users: you barely see people engage with other people unless they either get "triggered" or are in their own (little) circle

2) over- and under-moderation that on the one hand allows for people to openly be hostile but then delete whole threads in which most people stay polite and have engaging and wholesome conversations with each other

3) the change in the replying system where you have to "trick" the system by pasting the highlighted quote including or excluding the inspected part of the message in a new response box in order to not auto-quote the whole response. This structure is better for app users but not for a website that is still mostly actively used on desktop devices for replying. It also makes multi-quoting more inconvenient which has been a very common system in other boards based on vBulletin which even have an own button for it

@fleurbleue The actual number is probably 32 (this has been tested in AD contests) so more mentions require split posts.
