This side-story took its name from the second chapter of the Gaiden novel (third volume of its source LN) It'll be mostly likely an adaptation of that chapter. I haven't read the LN yet, and don't want to spoil myself but I heard this chapter is really sweet. |

It's probably not a recap, as that would've been in the title or description. So I'd say it's probably a quick ova teasing the movie next year |

Considering that they already have a sequel movie releasing in 2020, and that this will apparently be 2 hours long, i wouldn't be surprised if it's just a recap movie. Or maybe they'll do like the Clockwork Angeloid movie (from Heaven's Lost Property) and have it both ways (as in both recap and new story)? |

Probably a recap if you remember Kyoukai no Kanata, they made two movies: one a recap with a new twist ending to it and the other was the sequel. |

The movie in January 2020 is confirmed to take place several years after the anime series, thus not a recap. |

From the name, it seems like it's adapting a chapter from the Gaiden book so it's a new story. I'm confused about how they need 2 hours for one chapter though. |

Well, I don't think is a recap, as the news say is a "side story" to the series, and also, the director will be different from that of the tv series. The director of the tv series is Taichi Ishidate (Kyoukai no Kanata), and the director of this will be Haruka Fujita, whom, to be honest, is one of the most promisisng new directors in KyoAni. She hasn't made anything of her own yet, but she did little masterpieces like Hibike! S1E8 and violet's 5th episode. So I'm REALLY really excited that she's gonna get to direct a full movie at last :) |

I don't think it will be a recap but according to the title it will probably adapt the Gaiden. I just hope it will adapt all the Gaiden (and maybe some chapters of the original novel that weren't adapted in the anime) and not only chapter 2, because it has the same title as the second chapter of the Gaiden but this one was the less interesting of the series according to me. Even if I didn't like much episode 2, 4 and 5 I think there are better than chapter 2 of the Gaiden... |

Don't know what it will be about, but I wish it would be a full-featured movie. The animation would just kill on the big screen. |

I really really hope this will not be a recap movie! ;_; I adored the beauty of this anime (and the sidestory extra) however I hope Violet will continue looking for the major! Gaaaah! I'm just so excited thinking about what's going to happen!! I just love this story...!! (Although I don't wanna spoil myself with the Light Novel...I wanna visually enjoy this eyecandy of an anime!) Just please no recap movie...anything is fine for me, just not another recap...TT__TT |

Animagic screening plan lists this as 90 minutes. So it seems to be correct. I can imagine it may be an adaption of Gaiden with some recap mixed in? Because I don't know how they want to fill 90 minutes with Gaiden only... |

Can somebody who read the novels please confirm what it actually adapted? Short synopsis in spoiler tag, of course light spoilers ahead! The movie is divided into two connected parts. First one is about Violet serving as a private tutor for a girl that is going to make her debut, but who has almost no knowledge of upper class common sense, because she lived in poor conditions all the time. She wants to find a homeless child that she took care of back then. The second part takes place around three years later and is about this homeless child's dream to become a postwoman because postmen and -women are there "to bring joy to the people"... |

Ya know, I'd love to tell y'all about this movie. But I wasn't let inside despite me buying a ticket for that day specifically to see the premiere, because I was ONLY 30 minutes early instead of even earlier, I guess. The whole room was full and I didn't even get to the Q&A interview whatever thingy afterwards. Fuck AniMagic, man. |

I went to the room around 15 minutes before it started. The room down was full, yes, but there were still enough places left on the balcony where we got sent to by the staff. And during the Q&A half of the places on the balcony were empty. Looks like you didn't know you could also go up there...? |

The lady from the staff answered the question "Are there still free places on the balcony?" with no, that they are completely filled as well. I guess it's my fault for trusting her, but I figured they were all communicating with each other. As for the stuff afterwards, I was stuck in line for the bring&buy for well over an hour, and then IN the bring&buy for another hour. And then I didn't feel like catching whatever little stuff was still going on afterwards. So that one's on me I guess. I'm just kind pissed, because I went there on Friday and got a Friday+Saturday ticket, specifically so I could catch the movie. But whatever. |

As one of the first that have actually seen the movie on its world premiere last saturday at the AnimagiC festival in Germany, I think I can answer most of the questions asked in this post. However, you will probably have way more questions after reading this, since it is really really difficult to talk about the movie without spoiling major parts of the story. Also please excuse any mistakes regarding my english that may occur, my main language is german. The movie happens almost right after the story of the TV-series, but we do get a 3 year time skip in the second half of the movie. Basically, Violet receives a job from the (or a ; I dont quite remember) royal family. She has to travel to a special academy for young women that teaches them to neglect their feelings and always act like a perfect lady in any situation. This includes their appearance, behavior as well as trivial things like eating habits. Violet is supposed to look over one particular woman (named Isabella York) that shows troublesome behavior and doesnt seem to fit in. The job lasts for three months until the new ladies have their debut and are being married to successful men. For the first half of the movie, we slowly get to know Isabella and experience why she has problems fitting in, why she shows troublesome behavoir in the first place and why she chooses to do so. We also see how these problems relate to Violet, how she feels about them and what she does to help her. (Yes, this movie also gives us a lot of character developement for Violet herself) It is really difficult to talk about the second half without revealing major spoilers about Isabella or essentially the entire movie, so I'll just say that the say that the it focuses on solving Isabellas problems later on. This may sound confusing, so in short: The first half is about the 3 months Violet spends at the academy with Isabella, the second about solving the remaining problems that Violet couldnt solve during the 3 months. I hope this was helpful. |

@Raining_ Thank you for your synopsis. Although I've read Isabella's chapter in the Gaiden I was curious to know how they depicted it in this movie. I have some questions about the movie: - Has Isabella feelings for Violet? - Did they show the useless bath scene? - Did they reveal her real name? Sad that we will never see Lux and Silene... =/ |

But it was okay for me. I cant remember what they talked about in this scene, whether it was important or not. And I think I heard Isabellas real name, yes. But I cant remember, I am not good with names. The movie has more impact with the little girl I think. The seiyu was really good and the character is adorable. ^^ I liked the story alot. Really good movie in my opinion. But I should read about Lux and Silene, too. Some are dissapointed not seeing that story animated, so it must be worthy to take a look. =) |

Lux's story is one of the best and Silene is one of the most realistic in my opinion. And both of them are moving while I felt nothing with Isabella's story. |

@Kirie-san First of all, I'm glad that I could help. Now to your questions. (I'll answer the easy ones first) - Yes, they reveal her name, her background and what happens after she marries someone. One of the last scenes is when Benedict delivers Taylors letter with her at the sea. - They show the bath scene, but I wouldnt call it useless. A huge part of the movie focuses on how and why Violet can relate to Isabella. If I remember correctly, the dialogue between the two in that particular scene also shows how they slowly connect to each other, or how Violet can relate to her and how it affects her character. - It's difficult to say whether or not Violet has feelings for Isabella. The answer would probably be yes, but lets elaborate for a bit. One thing that especially stands out is how Isabella calls Violet her best friend in the movie. This, regarding the position Isabella currently is in, makes perfectly sense and is easy to understand. However, later on in the movie, Violet does the same and actually calls Isabella her best friend aswell. This is massive, since this is the first time (for the anime adaptations at least) that Violet expresses some form of bond to another person (except Gilbert for obvious reasons). However, we cant know if she actually means what she says. It's true that because they have a lot in common regarding to what they've been through, this seems to be the first time Violet has the ability to relate to someone, thus showing empathy for the first time. What we can't know is if Violets feelings are directed towards herself, as she's been through similar situations, or Isabella as a person. We know that Violet tries to solve the situation later on as she contacts Taylor and offers help, so the whole thing must've meant at least something to her. Tl;dr: Violet definitely relates to Isabella and does feel some emotions, but we don't know if these feelings are directed towards Isabella. I hope that wasnt as confusing as I thing it is |

But as you said the movie seems to focus on Isabella and Violet friendship while in the novel chapter I felt that it was more one-sided and I couldn't like Isabella even when her story is revealed. I even think that Luculia (who's a anime-only character) had a better story than Isabella. But this friendship story seems kinda odd. Although Violet has evolved through the show it's not like her to say to someone that she's her best friend. I mean in the novel even if she get along with Cattleya, Benedict and Lux and consider them as friends she doesn't express it. I don't know. Maybe the movie has depicted well the similarities between Violet and Isabella's background but I can't help thinking that them being best friends is weird. ^^' |

@Kirie-san I definitely agree with how you feel about Violet. Calling someone a "friend" is obviously really unusual and unfitting for her, and it definitely felt forced in the movie aswell. I think they just tried a little to hard to show her personal developement, while not actually meaning what they say. No matter how you put it, calling their bond a "friendship" doesnt fit the series at all. It does make sense if expressing her "friendship" is just another step of the many steps she takes towards learning empathy, but man it feels weird to go that far. As for Isabella, I personally really liked her as a character and a person. I guess that might be because the movie really tries to make you like her for obvious reasons, but even if that wasnt the case I think I'd still like her because of what she's been through and just because she is (just like most of Evergarden's characters) a believable character that feels like an actual human being. |
