I have seen a lot of old animes that has been made in 20th century. They are fine but the thing I don't like is the animation quality. Well I thing that was the best quality in old times but now we are watching new full HD that makes more realistic and make some character cuter.
>So what do you think? Are they junk?

old anime are good. The animation in a lot of shows isn't too bad. Stardust memories has better animation than most shows today. I think you mean artstyle and even then, I prefer the artstyle from earlier shows.

19th century is where the fun is at. They didnt even invent resolution back then, and it was all 1p. Everyone knows the quantity of p is inversely proportional to the quality of anime.

also dae HD literally means le realism & animation quality? xD xD

It depends. Around 1980 is where I draw the line. I know anything below that will just get extremely worse.

Depends, there's old anime with good animation and with terrible one.Just like modern anime.

I'd say what actually matters is the rest, is it not?

I actually prefer a lot of older animation styles. Especially when it comes to the color schemes and how smooth some of the hand drawn animation was. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the extremely vibrant colors that are in some new anime. But I'm in the minority whenever I have a discussion about that with my friends.

In fact if I think about it most of my favorite anime in terms of just animation alone are almost all made before 2000 (Akira, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Ghost in the Shell, etc.) I'm one of the weirdos who even prefers the 1999 Hunter x Hunter animation to the 2011 version.

talking about animation quality and mentioning HD. You, sir, have obviously no idea what you are talking about.

First of all resolution has nothing to do with animation quality. And a little fun fact: Old anime with remastered BD releases (which do exist for a lot of shows) have actually better resolution/details than the vast majority of modern releases where the 1080p versions are just upscaled versions of stuff produced in 480p or maybe 720p. But old anime were produced in 'real life HD' (because they are not digital) they just didn't have the technology to put it on film with that resolution, but if you apply modern HD technology to the frames from back then the shit looks better than most modern anime because it's not just an upscale, but the detailed, hand-drawn art reaching its full resolution potential.

Secondly animation quality has very little to do with age. It is much more relevant how big the budget is and what the schedule is. Movies from the 80s with a decent budget look better than 95% of modern day TV anime. TV anime are inherently low budget and use shit tons of budget saving techniques that lower the overall quality of the animation. Movies (and OVAs) tend to have bigger budgets and more relaxed schedules and therefore much better animation.

And thirdly artstyle has nothing to do with animation quality. It's just a matter of preference and whether you give something a shot and be open-minded about it long enough to get used to it. Because looking different/unfamiliar might be off-putting if you're used to something very different but that's just a matter of exposure. Artstyle, unlike animation quality does depend more on the decade than the type of show or budget, at least on average (there are always outliers) but one isn't worse than the other, just different. There is on objective way of saying one artstyle is good and another one is worse. That contradicts the meaning of art, which is subjective.

It also has a 1080p Remaster that looks better than most 1080p versions of modern shows IIRC.
I probably regret this post by now.

It doesn't matter when an anime was made - if it's being made with plenty of effort and resources during any time-period, it's going to have better animation quality than an anime without as such which is made during any other time-period.

They used to make actual manly men in the 80's When a MC was able to walk around and beat the shit of everyone he came across he had to be ripped as fuck.Fist of the northstar, Berserk, JoJo Baki the grappler were all badass mofo's. Now a days it's mostly androgynous teenagers. Although that's starting to change again somewhat. I like both old and new shit. I grew up on the old shit so I get a lot of nostalgia out them.

No, I don't immediately dismiss them because of the animation/art. I'll watch any show as long as it holds my interest.

I make a decent effort to check out "the classics" and have watched quite a few old shows. I think the earliest one I completed was something from 1969.

The quality in a lot of 70s and early 80s shows was pretty bad, but starting in the late 80s things got a lot better. IMO there are some 80s/90s anime that actually look better than a lot of modern shows do.

Old Anime are freaking amazing if you take the time to consider that they where all hand draw, frame by frame. (And colored by hand to )

There's animation porn such as Akira, with it's freaking amazing 30 Frames per second for its entire duration. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross and other stuff from the 80's that animation wise beat the crap out of CGI stuff from today.

*clears throat* some anime in the old days have waaaaaaaaay better animation than today, they just do not have flashy effects added after, the lightning and the colour palletes that modern anime do.

This used to be my opinion and I refused to watch anything like NGE, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach etc. Animation used to be a really big part of my enjoyment of a series, but after watching the first 30 episodes or so of Naruto I changed my mind. I still prefer modern anime with modern animation, but I no longer have any opposition to older anime.

By the the way, what I consider old is any 20th Century anime and sometimes stretching it to around 2005. I'm pretty young and only got into anime really recently.

Like lol you can't even compare the beauty and quality of masterpieces like Berserk 2017, to something ugly and low quality like Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Okay OP, look at this. It's from a TV anime that began airing in 1970, Ashita no Joe. Regardless of whatever issues you may have with the art style, this is clearly well animated.

This is another example from Space Battleship Yamato, which began airing in 1974.

I do think special effects in particular (explosions, liquid movement, etc.) tend to look better with the wider color palette you can get with digital animation as opposed to cel animation, but that doesn't mean the animation itself (the movement) was worse in older series.

I love older animes and they are no worse and often better then contemporary ones.
Art is different but again it is just different not better or worse.
Also oldschool animes are interesting to watch because you can find that what you have seen in new ones and thought was original really isn't.

The problem with a lot of old anime is that, their selling point back in the day was often how original the concepts behind them were.

Fast foward to the 21st century and their value is mostly historical, since there's usually a newer show that does a similar thing, except much better.

As for the animation, it was certainly less consistent.
Many old shows contain animation cuts that are better than whatever you can find today, except that happens approximately twice, and the rest of the show is more of a PowerPoint presentation with some moving lips on top.

Where's the "old anime look better and are way better animated than modern anime" answer? Some of the very best shows I saw animation-wise were oldies.

@Specimen021 Meeeh. Some recent and loved shows aren't any better animation-wise. Show me the sakuga in Toradora!, Steins;Gate or Spice and Wolf. Also, were are the horses, cars and mecha? Oh, they're 3D now because half the current animators don't know how to draw anything that isn't a cute girl.

@Clebardman You may have missed my point a tiny bit. There's next to no sakuga in Toradora!, for example, but it actually looks good for its full runtime. It's consistent and that's what I was talking about.

Also, I doubt the 3D is the result of competence. It's cost saving, 'cause 3D is dirt cheap comparing to hand-drawn.

Horses? They're usually hand drawn when they're important. Cars? I want examples, 'cause even crap like Initial D 3D'd that shit (I want a good car anime, please). Mecha? I genuinely don't care.
