After seeing The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (a few episodes) after reading a post from someone saying that GTO looked horrible where he said that this looks much better I wondered how many anime there are that to someone who's oldest anime they've watched was Soul Eater that looks like they could be from 2008-current.

Rules:
1. Must be made before Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (late 2002)
2. Story doesn't matter (This is not under recommended anime)
3. The art style and animation should be good enough that if you showed it to someone who has only seen anime from 2008 and afterwards on a 4:3 monitor (of if it's in widescreen a widescreen monitor) they wouldn't be able to tell it was an old anime too easily.
Example: Bad shaking (can't remember what it's called) (Bad)
Example 2: People which are close enough to make out their face just being a blur or smudge. (Bad)
Example 3: A slideshow (Bad)
Example 4: The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (Good)
4. Must have good audio quality/ good sound effects
Example: Vampire Princess Miyu (Bad)
5. No movies

List (not in any order):
1. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (When I first saw it I was surprised that it wasn't from the early 2000s and actually from 1994)
2. Cowboy Bebop (1998)
3. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002)
4. Space Cobra (1982)
5. Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988-1997)
6. Trigun (1998)
7. Neon Genesis Evangelion
8. Gunbuster
9. Cat's Eye.
10. Fist of the North Star
11. Outlaw Star
12. Card Captor Sakura
(Going to fix and update the list after I skim through a few episodes of each anime to see if they look like they could pass. Some day at least,)

Note: I'm not good with words. Someone pointed out that I made it seem too opinionated so I tried to fix it.

I still find Card Captor Sakura prettier than most modern anime even though it's from 1998

2001 isn't exactly old lol - might have been more useful to back that up 10/15 years. Personally, I'm still impressed with Space Cobra.

If we are counting movies then i think Spirited away makes the cut as it was released in 01. Also princess Mononoke is animated superbly as well

Project A-ko is still a lot of fun, and a good amount of the references would still be understood by anime fans today.

if you're talking just animation, then everything that wasnt a low budget piece of shit...

aka most ovas and movies, and some higher profile tv shows

did you deliberately avoid listing nge because of the last episodes?

That would include most movies and really only high budget shows. Probably going to go through tomorrow and check which shows don't look good after adding them to the list. Going to leave only the ones that do seem to pass.
Was suppose to be anime that the art style is close to 2008 anime with a good budget.
I was at first going to go through them all as they came in but too many people posted. I think I missed it? From what I can see it's not even in the posting. I've only added 1 thing to this list :P.

I do like the idea, but two issues come to mind.

1.How do you intend to rate "Art".
2. Do you intend to just trust everyones word?

You realize that many older series have during the majority of the run shit art or use alot of stillframes (0 animation) but during other instances have consistent Sakuka during fighting sequences. Evangelion, the whole Dragon Ball Franchise. How do you rate Evangelion? Count it in till the last 3 episodes where it´s a slide show?

Be more explicit because this thread lacks focus

Besides those two you may add
Digimon (the Movies).
Pokemon (The Movies).
One Piece (The Movies)
Slayers (The Movies)
The golden Boy Ova. 1995
Bastard!! 1992
Berserk 1997
Vampire Hunter D.
Wakakusa Monogatari: Nan to Jo-sensei 1993.
Robin Hood no Daibouken 1990.
X Series and Movie. 1998
Alps no Shoujo Heidi Winter 1974
Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna 2001. (some of the worst CGI ever, art is splendid though).

Anyways, anything high budget, like Akira. Also, a lot of series have animation inconsistencies, so is pretty hard to define "stood the test of time" in general terms.

now you're asking about art style?

no pre-2000 anime can realistically pass as being from 2008... the difference between character designs/art style, and cel vs digital is too big

"The art style must be decent"

You mean fitting YOUR taste, right?
There's no way of objectively judging an art style like you can judge animation. Judging by what you said about GTO I'd bet you'd dislike a lot of artstyles I personally love just because they're old.

In any case if you want to make a list of old anime whose artstyle you personally don't find ugly I suggest you do that in a blog post, there's nothing we can really contribute to that so I don't see why it needs a forum thread.
I probably regret this post by now.

Slam Dunk Movies animation are pretty much fluid and they're are widescreen too, I don't believe that it's 90s. so does Hunter x Hunter.

Eh, GTO didn't feel that dated in terms of presentation to me - apart from that laughably-dated CGI sequence at the start of episode 18 (with the Vice principal driving his new cresta).

In fact, I actually like the artstyle of GTO, because of just how expressive the characters were.

One anime that really didn't age well is Mahou Yuugi 3D. It's fun to watch as a nice little nostalgia for how shitty 3DCGI used to be, but it really can't be watched any other way.

Escaflowne is approaching 20 years old, and it's still a damn good-looking series. Yes, that includes the noses. I enjoy the noses.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Lupin the third part 2 and afterwards has aged pretty well imo. Particularly in that it aired on TV in america in the mid-2000s and came off as fairly stylish despite being 30 years old.

Well if you REALLY wish to show me an artstyle from 2012 and forward that looks like GTO's artstyle :) (also either has to be a movie or a full TV series).
I watched Gravitation which is from 2000 and it has a similar art style to GTO but I personally liked the art style and so do a lot of other people. Zetman aired in 2012 and it has a pretty crude art style. The only complaint people tend to have about it is that it was too rushed. Although it's not in quite the same category, Inferno Cop aired in 2012 and is well-received despite having an animation quality comparable to 1917.

Ghost Stories is a great one (from 2000, which fits your description). The character designs are quite unique, but they're not distinctively "old". The dub was made in 2005 and they joked once about an internet forum "not having much activity since 2000" meaning that the dub was set in the same time as it aired and the animation didn't feel out of place for 2005.

The Twelve Kingdoms (Apr 2002-Aug 2003) -- which is borderline on your age requirement.
Cowboy Bebop of course.

While I agree LotGH definitely stands the test of time (I gave it a 9 and it's in my top 10) there's no way it passes your rule #3. I like the realistic character designs and as long as they are talking on the bridge of a ship it might pass muster but all the external action scenes in space or moving ground vehicles, etc. immediately screams "old" to me.

The thread title is now misleading due to the graphics rule. As someone else mentioned it may as well be "Old Anime Whose Graphics Has "Stood the Test of Time".

The only answer is Inuyasha.

Made my the powerhouse duo of Sunrise and Kyoani, it's animated better than most of it's peers during the early 2000s era (before Ghost in the Shell).

Cowboy Bebop is really your best example of this. It's clearly old, from a time Western art had a much bigger influence on Anime. In fact, most of the tropes there - tough badass dudes, noir bullshit, space travel - is extremely cliched right now. It has all the shtick that make critics fawn over movies - oh! Everyone is tough in this movie so I'm tough and cool for liking it!

Yet it's never pretentious, always fun and wacky and every episode is more exciting than the last. I don't agree with those who talk about depth in that anime, but it's so fun it makes telling stories look easy. Such attention to detail, to making sure every scene is important.
