So, I thought of a somewhat controversial/absurd proposition: Should teachers (of children, of course) be armed? Why, or why not?

Teachers would of course receive proper training on how to wield and use a gun prior to be licensed to carry one. Guns would only be used in extreme cases, and for the most part, their presence would (hopefully) just act as "deterrents" to school shootings or other acts of violence.

Some pros and cons to this argument:
Pros:
-Arming teachers could lead to safer schools.
-Not all schools have police readily available to protect them.
-Teachers need "protection" just as much as students.

Cons:
-Children are impressionable.
-Guns in schools might be used in circumstances other than defence.
-Children would be caught in the crossfire, if any school shootings were to occur.
-How could arming teachers be regulated?

They should be supplied with grenades, flash grenades, smoke grenades, automatic rifles, bullet resistant armour, rocket propelled grenades, and armoured personel carriers. That'll make school just the bit more exciting, don't you think? ^^

-Children would be caught in the crossfire, if any school shootings were to occur.
Not being armed is a worse situation as they have nothing to fight back with. Ofcourse running for cover is the best option but when you can take down the perpetrator, you should do so ASAP to prevent more casualties right?

I don't think giving teachers guns would make the school any safer. Better answer would be to have some sort of security guards patrolling the school, but of course that might not be very easy to arrange.

armed teachers are useless. just open the door in the middle of the lecture and shoot the teacher first.

a good way would be to make it illegal for children and teenagers to undergo training with weapons

just a retard american would give children weapons...

Only our armed forces and police should have assault weapons and handguns to protect and serve.

I don't wanna hear how ideally Mr Jinkers in math class would protect and serve my kid with guns.

Oh give the caretakers guns to incase someone runs into the playground at lunch while the teachers are marking paperwork.

Hello students. It's good to see you again

Not necessarily. Sure teachers who have arms may teach better but we shouldn't disadvantage the disabled, who's to say that they couldn't be good teachers without any arms. Teachers without legs though? Thats not possible.

After the 2014 Peshawar school massacre, which resulted in about 150 deaths (mostly children), Pakistan allowed teachers to carry firearms and provided them with training.

Then there was another attack last month at a university. At least 22 people died, but one armed teacher saved a few of his students by firing on the attackers, though he was killed himself.

A school shooting never occurred at any of the schools I went to yet there were officers there anyways and if someone tried to they were there ready to protect us just in case. Usually all they did was drug bust. I answered like this because you insinuated or just didn't phrase your words right(?) that I have experienced a school shooting?

No, I replied to you, because what you were saying implied that you had no shootings because there were officers. That's a fallacy. You didn't experience any shootings, and there just so happened to also be officers. I didn't insinuate at all that you have experienced a school shooting.

You explained it properly this time though. I wasn't entirely sure if you were going for satire or actually believing that having officers was the direct cause of not having shootings. For example, I've never experienced a school shooting, and there have been no officers at the schools I attended, and in other cases, there have been shootings in schools where there have been officers.

you won't find many people more pro-gun then me, but i do not think teachers should have guns. they are teachers, the duty to potentially kill should not be in their contract. Although i do think schools should have armed guards. the high school i attend has armed security and a few police officers also armed. their job description is to protect and in my opinion the teaching and protecting should not overlap, but still remain under one roof

nope. I think all schools should employ armed guards and / or armed policmen though that work in shifts to patrol the school grounds. That way there can be a much faster response to a school shooting other than calling 911 and waiting for help while people get killed in the mean time.

Not in my school, and not lethal weapons durr, my school was very peaceful and chill, yet even so some dudes used to use homemade grenades in the bathrooms during class. It happened about three times. Imagine in a favela, in suburban schools, in violent areas.
Put cameras all over the place and it's good. And reinforce monitoration and enforcement of rules. There would be lesser bullying, the reason for the shootings.

I'm not surprised. I don't have much experience/knowledge of the schooling system and how it's run currently, but I do believe a fair chunk of teachers in the UK are unqualified as well. Unqualified and wielding a gun, sounds like a perfect match.
