How do you convince your anime friends to watch more "quality anime"?

I really want to discuss with my anime friend* about the greatness of Mushishi, the works of Masaaki Yuasa and Satoshi Kon etc.. He asked me to recommend some entertaining anime and I told him to watch FZ. He loved it, and he asked for more. I told him to watch PingPong and Shinsekai Yori.. He told me afterwards that he was put off by PingPong's animation. He did not bother to watch Shinsekai Yori. And I don't want to mention Satoshi Kon/Mushishi as I think it would just be ignored.

So, MAL users, how can I convince him to watch "quality, elitist-pandering anime"? I think he will be watching Aldnoah now..

*FB friend who is anime otaku

PS: He has a MAL account but is not active anymore.

Recommend him more, I guess. But you know that sometimes, you can't tell people what to do, even if it's for their own good :(.

My secret is to not try.

Seriously though, if they're ever interested in broadening their horizons, I'll be more than happy to suggest stuff. When that happens, I'd suggest stuff slowly, not jumping into the super DEEP stuff until they seem ready. Until then though, it's not my place to force people to watch shows outside their comfort zones, even if I hold those shows highly. I can't enjoy an anime if it's forced upon me, so I wouldn't do the same to another person.

No, you shouldn't do that. If you want to show some quality stuff, go with shows which are more appealing (Brotherhood, F/z, champloo etc). Once he watched that and wants to expand his horizons even further, then you should recommend stuff which are hard to tackle for a casual friend.

2) If you want to succeed at relating to other people, you should be aware that people are different. Know what your friend likes, and recommend stuff he's likely to enjoy.

3) Remember: most people aren't looking for abstract "quality", they are looking for anime that matches their tastes. A person looking for an action anime won't be pleased with a slice-of-life anime, no matter how good it is.

4) The best time to recommend "quality" anime that doesn't fit the person's tastes is when he's complaining that anime has gone boring. Maybe a change of genre is just what he needs.

Those aren't really good shows to show to a newbie/casual.

SSY is something you need an open mind to watch as well as intellect.

lock him in a dark cellar and force feed him l33t anime until he's one of us.

Ok seriously, i've just mentioned some of my favorite titles to my friend that i think he'll like and show him some clips or songs and then i'll wait until he's decided to watch the anime by himself. Worked for me with Kaiji and now it's one of his favorites.

I know this feeling and i f*ng hate it. Tasteless friends be like fairy tail best anime ever and I'm just sitting there facepalming.

Gave people so many great anime like Uchuu Kyoudai, JoJo, Mushishi, Gintama, Samurai Champloo etc. and they end up watching something at the same level as Mars Of Destruction. OK. That's when i say f*k u and I just let them be.

I don't even want to give good anime to some guys cuz they are just not worth of such great masterpieces. I would rather hear them praising Pupa than bashing Mushishi.

Maybe when their mind finally realizes what good anime truly are then I will suggest them all the goods i have but until then they can watch their tokyo ghoul, fairy tail and SAO.

Those "quality" anime aren't good by themselves. They're just "artsy", and only worthwhile when you've seen all those mainstream shows and gotten tired of them. Don't try to make somebody watch them.

Elitist-pandering=/=quality anime.

I found Mushishi and Ping Pong have good, but not very developed.

Everyone watches what they consider to be high-quality. Recommend him stuff you think will suit his style.

I was being half sarcastic. I really dislike it when people don't give shows like SSY a chance because it seems slow or boring. It's just shows they have a low attention span and intellect level.

He has a right to believe that his taste is superior.

And the examples he listed are shows that can appeal to any audience and are easy to get into. They rely on being entertaining rather than trying to teach morals or prove a literary message.

Hey he can believe if his so called taste is superior if he wants ,but that doesn't mean he should look down on people who like stuff that he doesn't like. There is a difference between stating a fact & an opinion. For instance I think SAO is a mediocre show ,but I know that's just my personal opinion and I won't look down on other people for liking it.

He's not looking down on them. He doesn't want to waste time with people who share different taste. Or at least, that's what I interpreted it as.

Didn't sound like that to me, to me it sounded like he was looking down own his friends for not enjoying any of the anime he recommended them and enjoying stuff he doesn't like. I certainly wouldn't want to waste my time watching something I find boring.

I actually don't care one bit what they are watching I just want people to experience in my opinion better things just for their own good. They just turn down my suggestions because they don't like the name, art or they didn't like the first episode, that just annoys me because they are acting ignorant. I'm not saying my taste is superior or whatever, I'm just saying that people who enjoy the anime i listed above have not experienced many anime and they think those ones are the best that anime industry can offer so they automatically think that everything else is worse. I admit I liked Fairy Tail too , back when I have only seen like 20anime, but my field of view widened and now I can say that Fairy Tail is really just an average show at most, doesn't offer anything special, copies the likes of One Piece etc.
The more anime you see the more your taste changes.
