It's a story of Rebecca's past: How she and Mr. Toy Soldier met. Had so much feels for me, though. ;_;

Then all the audience at the Colosseum hates her because she's the granddaughter of King Riku. :/

They made her really damn cute when she was younger.. especially the last version where she started to train her sword skill was so nice to look at. A nice change to the regular super big breasted girls in OP.

I can't believe they spent the whole episode on Rebecca's past. I don't normally criticise the pacing but WTF was this episode? They could have done her life story in less than 10 minutes.

Also didn't people start turning in to toys after Doflamingo came? So how was he already a toy?

And it's pretty obvious what the soldier toys relationship to Rebecca is.

They adapted one whole chapter, so no change to their regular pattern. :O In fact, I think they did quite well in extending the source material for the whole episode.

And the toy thing: They didn't say how long he has been a toy or whether Doflamingo acted in the underground before he became king. I think there are quite a few possibilities which could explain the situation.

True that her past could have been done quicker, however, I feel that they stretched it out to help Oda get ahead in the manga so the anime does not catch up to quickly to where it is.

Overall, I liked the episode & it was great to see the relationship between her & the soldier start off with such a tragic event & grow into what it currently is.

I agree that I think I know who the soldier is, (I catch the manga off & on again, (I tend to prefer being surprised with what comes up, instead of already knowing), but I can not wait to see if I am correct on it.

As for him being a toy, I can see another episode or so that could delve into when he became a toy, for how long, etc.

I am looking forward to see how Rebecca fights in the battle royal, this arc is starting to pick up & Luffy is starting to get that look in his eye when he sees a nakama being wronged.

Extremely partial to character building, so I thought it was a well done flashback and establishment of Rebecca's backstory. Very touching episode, Rebecca and Soldier-san were very cute together. I believe she has passed the "have tragic backstory" requirement of the strawhats. I can hope. : )

Good episode. Got alabasta vibes from rebecca's story.

Anime is starting to be fun to watch again. Extending the source material is oke as long as the focus is not on those brainless G5 marines/centaurs and ignorant public. I hate those cannonfodder characters.

As long as they do the fillers properly its going to be a great arc.

Why? Becasue fuck story and characters and gimmie some action and fights and haki explosions?

Pacing was THE SAME AS ALWAYS. And while every damn chapter is dragged to no limits, this one actually benefitted from being slower, and yet people bitch the most. Becasue fuck backstory and characters. Fuck what One Piece is all about.

Fairly dull episode. While the content itself wasn't bad, I wish they hadn't spent a whole episode on it (yes, I know the pacing is the same as always - that doesn't mean I like it).

Yes, fuck backstory if they spend the amount of time on it that One Piece does. Also, I disagree that backstory and characters are what One Piece is all about. One piece is about the world that it takes place in, in my opinion.

Then you were clearly watching it wrong. One Piece is all about the flashbacks. The past history of people who's will was inherited by next generations. It's always been about this. It was even thrown in our fucking faces in chapter 100 with Roger's words. It's the main theme of this entire goddamn series. The whole void century and ancient kingodm plot is fueled by this theme and even fucking Whitebeard was talking about it while dying, because IT IS THAT IMPORTANT. And flashbacks are integral part of it. Flashbacks are the single most important element of One Piece story. Without it One Piece would fall apart and make no damn sense. The story, the themes, the characters. All of this works thanks to flashbacks.
No flashbacks = no One Piece.
That's how it is.

And when was the the last time we got a legit flashback anyway? I tell you when. It was damn Fishman Island, 100 episodes ago so don't talk about much time spent, because after 100 episodes you got ONE DAMN EPISODE OF FLASHBACKS and you people sill bitch. And here's newsflash, there are going be AT LEAST THREE MORE FLASHBACKS this arc and every one of them is going to be longer than todays. YES. You can drop the series now, because if you're bitching about one, not even full, episode of flashbacks then you're gonna go apeshit during future ones.

Regarding the top paragraph, I'll concede on that. That makes a lot of sense spelled out like that, although I still don't like the amount of time they spend on the past for it. I'd rather them get on with the present story. If they need to do a backstory for it that's fine, however I do wish there would be less instead of one for nearly every character we meet (obvious exaggeration, but there is a lot).

The Fishman Island flashback was a long one, more than enough flashback for 100 episodes, in my opinion. Also there was the Caesar one on Punk Hazard, although that was only half an episode so I didn't mind, I actually quite enjoy them when they don't take up practically a whole episode.

Also, my previous post was stated already with the knowledge of those coming flashbacks. If it was just the one today then you're right, I am bitching over nothing. However knowing that there's much more than that coming for this arc alone is what bothers me.

It's alway a good thing to have character development, though it was rather predictable.

Also, does she really need to be half naked ? I can't take her seriously with that "outfit".

But is it really that much? Is... I don't know 10% of the whole story so much that you can't handle it? And it's not like this 10% is wasted on nothing. It gets you to know characters better, so when the drama begins in present time, the feels hit you much harder, all thanks to that earlier flashback.

Would Robins "I want to live!" be that powerful without all the knowledge of her past? Would the scene where Nami stabs herself and creis for help be that powerful without knowing what Arlong did to her in the past? Would ringing the bell be that powerful without the Noland flashback? You know the anwser.

Lol all you people bitching about the episode when they did a really good job animating the chapter and made it even better than the manga, in any case if you read the manga you already know what to expect and if you've been following the one piece anime lately you already know the drill so complaining won't do anything

Wow, two good episodes in a row? That didn't happen in OP for some longer time.

I like Rebecca, nice back story, though didn't cry this time. Comparing to other ones it seems a bit repetitive and not really original. Still, can't say that I didn't enjoy it, hopefully the battle won't be as boring as the previous ones...

Why are some people complaining?
Last two episodes were beautiful. For the first time, in a long, looooong time, anime did a much better job than manga. Seeing stuff like: "Rebecca is boring, why are they showing her flashback." , "Worst pacing in history of pacing" makes me wonder "What do you people even like in One Piece? Why did you even watch 600+ episodes if you're complaining about episodes like these. What is that what you want to see?"
But fandoms are just like that, even if I think that OP fans are maybe the most "loyal" fans in every aspect(because of the series long run), there will always be people tastes and what they want.
Some people want more fights, some better animation, other better pacing, that variety will always exist, but I didn't know it was this high, on this level. Not in One Piece "Fandom" (I hate that word thought) :/

I have a feel, or I'm 100% sure that people who watch only anime, and people who watch/read both, anime and manga, take different pleasure in watching OP episodes. But here I'm again sure that people who read the manga are pleased and really enjoyed this episode with Rebecca.

This flashback shouldn't be shorther, it should be even longer. It was genius. The way they showed that bond between Rebecca and her mom, Soldier-san, in just a few minutes, man... It could only be achieved with this gorgeous background and animation, soundtracks. This episode's background and design reminded me of "Ace-Sabo-Luffy" arc or Sabaody arc - shinny, bright, colorful, creative. Magnificent.

There was a time when I didn't doubt that OP episode would be great, that TOEI will do a good job, now I always hope that they make it good. I would like that time back, and this episodes showed me that it may be possible

Anyways, excellent episode

Lol. I don't have a problem with hot chicks, but seriously when there's massive boobs everywhere it looks like an Ecchi anime. When did I complain about character development?

The character development was for the other people who seem to forget OP always had a lot of supporting characters with development, it not all about the strawhats.

Kind of late to respond, but where did I say I wanted to see action?

I have no problems with backstory if it is fresh. Yes that girl had tough past but if so much time is going to be invested on her, give me something different. I cannot exactly draw the similarities between hers and others, but the backstory was just bland and predictable. I am not a manga reader, but something tells me this half naked Damsel in distress, who I have to take seriously even if she is half naked, is not going to be much of a factor in the plot moving forward. She wont do anything significant and will just be another one teary eyed bitch that needs help.

And LOL at who ever made the Vivi/Arabasta comparison. Vivi was one of the best supporting characters of One Piece. There was some depth to her and certain scenes between her and the crew highlighted it. Robin comparison is further more bad for obvious reasons I do not even feel like typing. This character likely will be as significant as the titty princess from Fishman arc. A full episode purely dedicated to her makes this show inferior in quality.

I am not following Naruto anymore, but One Piece needs to step up its game. Its formulaic approach is not an issue, but they have to improve depth and dimensions to their characters if they are going to spend so much time on some.

So if Rebecca's grandfather was the former king, why weren't they living in the palace or someplace better than the one they were living before Doflamingo's rise to power? Did her mother marry some commoner, pirate or other whatever is undesirables in their society who died or is missing (as implied by the empty chair) so they became destitute or banished, punished, exiled? If the living toys were humans before, who the hell was Soldier really? And what about the legendary gladiator from before? I feel like he is tied to the story of why Dresrossa is the way it is now.

Argghh more questions than answers... >_<
